Letters A “No” vote on annexation will hurt Albion

COLUMNS Law That Helps People...Barber and cosmetology schools By GEORGE M. STRANDER Ingram County Court Administrator and Probate Register Fifth in a series. As discussed in the last article, one of the requirements for obtaining a barber license in Michigan is demonstrating satisfactory completion of the required number of hours of instruction at a licensed barber college. Not surprisingly, those seeking licensure in Michigan as a cosmetologist or related professional also typically need to show some measure of education at a licensed school of cosmetology. Barber schools: Interestingly, on the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) website devoted to licensed barber colleges, only five colleges statewide are listed, and all are in the southern half of the Lower Peninsula. Two of the approved barber colleges are located in Detroit and a third is in Flint. The other two are closer to Calhoun County – one in Lansing and the other in Kalamazoo. Pursuant to the state Occupational Code, barber colleges need to provide an educational program heavily weighted on practical training. While a student barber can expect to take around 200-300 hours of classroom instruction, he or she will spend around 1,600 hours learning barbering hands on. Any student barber who has completed the 10th grade and is “of good moral character” may get a student barber license. This license immediately allows the student to “render barber services to the public under the supervision of an instructor.” Cosmetology schools: While there are only five licensed barber colleges in Michigan, LARA lists about 110 licensed cosmetology schools in our state, with at least a couple located here in Calhoun County. Unlike barber colleges, cosmetology schools can be licensed for specific types of instruction within the broad category of cosmetology. Almost every licensed school is licensed for general “cosmetology,” which is a basic service including one or more of the following: hair care services, skin care services, manicuring and electrology (electrical removal of body hair). Since Michigan licenses individuals for specific cosmetology services (e.g. manicuring) in addition to general cosmetology, many licensed schools also offer instruction specifically tailored to these services, including the services mentioned above as well as “natural hair cultivation” (i.e., twisting, wrapping, weaving, extending, locking and braiding hair by hand). Unlike a student barber, a student cosmetologist cannot immediately practice on the public, even if supervised. For instance, for general cosmetology services a student must complete at least 350 hours of instruction, including both theory and practical hours, in order to try out her or his skills on others.

To the Editor: A “Yes” vote on annexation is vital to a healthy Albion. The fact is that in the Albion School District, a “No” vote means that we, the citizens of Albion, are going to get stuck with a $3 million tax bill to pay off our school debt. Our high taxes will go up even more. It will probably put some already strained businesses on the brink of closure and certainly will hurt many residents in the Albion area. Albion is already economically challenged. But saving Albion residents’ money is only one of many great reasons to vote “Yes.” The Marshall Public Schools District has been

really welcoming to the Albion students who have entered Marshall Middle School. My kids attend Marshall Middle School, and I ask them how things are going nearly every day. They and the majority of their friends from Albion and Marshall are extremely happy with how this relationship has gone so far. The merger of the two districts has blended the students of two communities very well while continuing to provide one of the best educations in the entire state. A “Yes” vote gives Albion students this excellent opportunity. Have there been bumps? Absolutely, as there are in any marriage. Bad or poorly times decisions?

Yes. Mistakes? Yes. The Albion Public Schools are guilty of the bad decisions just the same. But Marshall and Albion teachers and officials are working hard to fix these problems. Of course there will be growing pains and adjustments as the relationship moves forward. But this Albion-Marshall relationship has a proven track record of success. Annexation with Marshall has worked for a couple of years now, ever since the Albion High School students were absorbed into Marshall High School. With this success, it only makes sense that the rest of the Albion students attend Marshall schools. A “Yes” vote al-

lows this. Yes, it will be even better if we can maintain an elementary school here in our Albion community. The Marshall annexation makes that possible. Finally, aside from the money, opportunity and quality of education reasons: As someone who grew up in Flint and went to Flint Central High School, I can say without hesitation that this incredible gift of diversity of experience and backgrounds will benefit all of these kids for the rest of their lives. Please vote “Yes.” Morris Arvoy, Albion

Keep Albion’s name alive with Marshall-Albion School District To the Editor: Returning to Albion after our first snowbird trip to the south, I noticed a number of signs on front lawns of homes urging voters on May 3 to vote “No” on the question of annexing our school district to that of Marshall Public Schools. As a former teacher in Albion, I have conflicting feelings on this issue. I came to Albion from the world of corporate training and prior to that, of teaching speech, theatre and English in both high school and college. My task was to assume the reins of a popular and very successful forensics program. When I arrived, Albion High School had had a spectacular history of interscholastic academic achievement. In this area alone - although Albion excelled in many areas (athletic and academic) -we consistently proved our superiority not only against area schools, but also over schools across the state. During my seven-year tenure, Albion won the state championship once and never placed below sixth in the state in forensic competition as a class “B” high school. So what does all that have to do with the current issue? Well, the pamphlet that now urges me to vote “Yes” on annexation speaks to none of the issues hidden between the lines of the

previous paragraph. And I feel that the “between the line issues” need to be acknowledged and respected. And to those folks who want to vote “No” May 3, many of whom were born, raised and represent several Albion generations, I am a 30-year “newcomer.” I recognize the emotional justification for the “No” sign on your lawn. I feel your pain. I have taught in schools in university towns (Penn State), in big cities (Los Angeles/Philadelphia) and in Muskegon (Orchard View) and I have no reservations when I assert that the Albion School District, where I came to finish my teaching career, was one of the best in which I have ever taught. From my little corner of the world, all those speech tournament victories, students taken to state competitions, students who finished at the top or near the top in persuasive, dramatic or informative speech meant that the raw material I received from teachers, businessmen and women, professors and average citizens - their most cherished asset, their children - also became mine. It was easy because they were smart, curious and hungry to learn. What teacher could ask for more? So I’m torn when I see these “No” signs. Sure, the facts argue otherwise. Schools of choice, horren-

dous political decisions that have taken factories and faculty elsewhere to live and the persistent, ugly smell of race and class bias, all have led to the current urgent environment of necessity. So, I get it: “Yes” is the smart vote. But in recognizing the history of perceived and actual competition between Albion and Marshall, I’d like to offer a suggestion that might salve a little of the emotional hurt a “Yes” victory might bring: include the Albion name in all future identification of the “new” school district which this annexation would create. Marshall-Albion School District is one possible solution, or the soberly creative folk who published the vote ‘Yes’ pamphlet can come up with one of their choice. It is important to be remembered, important not to be forgotten. It is why headstones bear the names of our loved ones and civic leaders have their names on memorials and buildings. Isn’t it then also important to say ‘Yes” to all that Albion has contributed and continues to contribute to education? How about we say “Yes” to keeping Albion’s name alive somewhere in this new amalgamated and annexed district? Edward S. Kernish, Albion resident, Former Albion teacher

Albion Branch of the American Association of University Women supports annexation To the Editor: We are teachers, retired teachers, mothers, fathers, sisters and citizens of the Albion School District. We care about our children whether they belong to us personally or to our community. We support annexation because: • Our children deserve

to have a quality education, including STEM, art, music and physical education, as well as field trips and other educational opportunities; • Annexation will provide a stable school district that will include our Pre-K to 5th grade school in Albion, partnered with a

comprehensive pre-K through 16 school system including Kellogg Community College and Albion College; • We will have a superintendent and administration that recognize our needs and are in contact with us about our future; • Our town will be part

of a well-ranked school district of which we can be justifiably proud; • Annexation will allow us to respond to the needs of all of our students; • We will have the security of knowing that our school will be provided for without additional taxes. In fact, our current

debt will be paid off, and our taxes will be reduced. The American Association of University Women, since its founding in 1881, has been committed to quality education. Historically, AAUW fought for the women’s right to vote and for child labor laws, among other

causes. Today, we are fighting for the best education for all of our young people. We ask that you join us and vote “Yes” on May 3. Susan P. Conner and Martha O’Kennon, Co-presidents, Albion Branch AAUW

‘Our love for our children should go beyond pride in a name’; Vote ‘Yes’ To the Editor: My wife and I chose to send our children to Albion Public Schools because it was important that we were part of our community, that my kids made friends across cultures and different economic backgrounds and that the school was close enough to make involvement in school activities easy. There have been times when

hurtful things have been said to my son and racial misunderstandings have occurred, but also times when we’ve seen students show mature behavior well beyond their age, and times when my son’s classmates have shown great compassion, curiosity and empathy. He’s had excellent teachers, and he’s grown academically and socially. We don’t regret our decision.

Discovering our district’s financial crisis was hard. We understand why people are clinging to the idea that we can change things ourselves if we just work smarter, as we once thought that, too. However, it doesn’t make us lesser to admit we can no longer go it alone. It’s time to recognize there is no shame in working as a team. Our community’s children are our future, and our love for

them goes above and beyond our pride in a name and our pride in a city. My youngest will be starting kindergarten next year and annexation brings a promise for his future that as a parent I owe him. It brings a promise of an elementary school here in Albion. It brings a promise of increased resources. We’ve seen the closing of the academic gap among economically

disadvantaged students at Marshall and the success and opportunities provided for all of our students there. We can continue to enjoy diversity, closeness and community involvement in a Marshall Public School district. We will vote “Yes” on annexation, and we urge you to say “Yes” as well. Mike Nicholson, Albion parent

514 S. Kalamazoo, Marshall

Team poised for successful season

By STEVE WISSINK Girls Track Coach I think this team has the potential to be the best team we've had in many years. We have 48 girls on the team, so it's a very large team. We also have more talented athletes than we've had in a long time. I believe our strongest area will be distance. We have five All-League cross country runners, Abbey Ufkes, Rachel Schoepke, Hilly Tellevik, Ava Klein and Abby St. John on the team, in addition to last year's top runners in Zoey Zacharski, Hannah Koch, Olivia Hancock and Hannah Delmotte. We have several good hur-

dlers returning in Taylor Horn, Madi Burkwalt and Kaitlyn Turner. Jessica Vorst is our top returning sprinter. We have a number of sprinters with potential, and we've added Olaide Olapade who was undefeated last year in the 100 and 200 as an 8th grader. Maycee McClure is another freshman who was a good sprinter last year. We also should be strong in the throws. We have Alivia Shumaker and Chloe Webber returning, and Courtnee Clemons is another freshman with potential. Most exciting is the addition of basketball phenom Nikki Tucker to the team. I'm pretty sure Nikki will be an

Veteran team hopes for rebound season By ANTHONY MILLER Softball Coach

We are looking forward to having many returning varsity players from last year's team that struggled to find ways to win. We believe that we will be able to use the experiences from last year to make some big strides this season. Unfortunately, we will be down one important piece until after spring break in Elisa Saari as she had minor surgery and still needs more time to recover.

However, these girls are working tirelessly to improve and put a better product on the field. Our plan is to continue to work hard at cleaning up the "controllables" so as to lead us to more wins. Our key returners: Kaylie Bates (SS), Mical Knafel (2B), Elisa Saari (OF), Mackenzie Benham (P), Lindsay Gardner (OF). Our key newcomers: Caitlin Allread (Catcher), Victoria Trudell (Catcher/3rd), Savanna Bouwens (1st)

outstanding addition to the team as a thrower and perhaps some other events. We also bring back Ally Johnson who had an outstanding freshman year in the pole vault, and we have a couple new girls trying the vault this year. Perhaps our biggest question mark is the jumps, but we have a number of girls that are working hard to learn those events. Our goals are to do well and try to win our invitationals, compete for an I-8 championship and send as many girls to state as possible. And as always, we want to have fun, work hard and improve throughout the season.

Tennis players look to repeat 2015 success By KEVIN BROWNELL Girls Tennis Coach I am really excited about this season. We have a lot of returning players with a lot of varsity experience. Last year, we finished in third place in the Interstate 8 conference and I really feel that we can improve on that this year. We will be very strong at our singles positions, and I'm especially looking forward to watching our number one singles player, Grace Corcoran flourish. It's Grace's senior season and she has put in a lot of time and effort and I can't wait to see it pay off. On the doubles side, we return five of our eight doubles players. It's early, and we are still working out the partnerships and their flights, but they have a lot of experience. Combine that with our exciting newcomers and we should do well.

Young, experienced squad looks for breakthrough By PHILLIP MURPHY Boys Golf Coach

The Marshall boys golf team will have another young squad this year. They will be following the leadership of juniors Jack Welke (qualified for Regional as Individual last year) and Ryan Wade, key players from last year’s varsity team. With the much improved Isiah Strand and Nick Mumaw along with new- comers Jacob Redman and Carl Quist, we will look to improve on last year’s results to be competitive in the I8. Marshall will be hosting this years district’s with the team goal of advancing to Regional. Rounding out the rest of the team is Bram Armbruster, Trevor Boike and Evan Walker.

Soccer set for another I-8 championship run By HANS MORGAN Girls Soccer Coach Its been a whirlwind couple of weeks for the girls soccer program. We were elated to see the girls basketball team win the state championship. We have eight varsity players that participated in the state championship, so it was inevitable that it affected our preparations, but all of the girls (those involved in basketball and those that weren't) have been terrific. So, right now, we're working really hard on trying to figure out who we are this season and establish some clear roles and goals. I would say that right now I think our biggest weakness is the fact that we're quite a ways behind other teams in terms of preparation, but is something we'll overcome very quickly. We have 12 returning letter winners and three more young ladies that played with the varsity in the state tournament. Among that group, we have an MHSAA honorable mention All-State Selection, three All-Area Se-

lections and four AllLeague Selections. So, I definitely think one of strengths is our depth and

experience. There is a lot of talent in the group and we're really excited about what we think we can de-

velop into if we can keep improving every day. We have significantly upgraded our non-conference

schedule in hopes that exposure to some more high level teams will help us to be playing at a high level

as we enter league play and the state tournament. "

Experienced team looks to make its mark By JOHN HENDLER Editor With 10 seniors on this year’s squad, the Marshall High School varsity baseball team certainly has a lot of experience and new head coach Tom Sharpley feels that will pay off as the season progresses. “I still need to learn the kids and the kids need to learn me,” said Sharpley, who replaces Trevor Kelly who is now coaching at Albion College. “But, I expect us to be competitive in every game. I believe we can play with anybody on our schedule.” Sharpley says the team is deep, pitching-wise and that certainly showed in the team’s first two games, allowing just three earned runs in a pair of 3-2 losses. Sharpley added that Mason Griffith, Drew DeVine, Logan Austin, Logan Brigham and Trevor Greenwood will be regulars on the mound but pointed out that Tyler Weck, Andrew Shippell, Brad Heidenreich, Scott Reagle, Kyle Veich and Noah Fulmer are also expected to take the mound at times during the season. “For a high school baseball team, we have considerable pitching depth,” said Sharpley. “As we go throughout the season, our pitching depth will help us

win some games because some teams won’t have that same depth.” Serving as Sharpley’s

assistant coaches this season are Jason Bushong and Aaron Powell. “At the plate, we have

many contact hitters and a few kids that can drive the ball to the gaps,” said Sharpley. “We’ve got good

team speed. This is a good group of kids and they work pretty hard. Another one of our strengths is that

we are going to be a very solid defensive team.”
