Albion’s Gamechanger: Albion College President Mauri Ditzler looks to change the college and the city of Albion for the better

Walk For Warmth

Mauri Ditzler, who became Albion College’s 16th president July 1, said growing a community and growing a college go hand-in-hand. “At every college I have worked, one of the most important things we have done is look at community issues,” he said. “We’ve looked at fulfilling the founding mission of our institution. That doesn’t mean we don’t pay attention to what’s going on in the world, because our students are going to go out and live in a world that’s global. They’re going to solving national and international problems. But, we also need to be thinking about our local issues.” See story on page 20

Local officers, deputies awarded for life-saving efforts During the Feb. 2 Marshall City Council meeting, Marshall Police Officer Anthony Philpott and Sgt. Kris Ambrose were given meritorious service awards for saving the life of a gunshot victim in Marshall in December. “It was a phenomenal team effort between Marshall Police Department, the Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch and the Sheriff’s Office,” CCSO Sgt. Brent Lincoln said. “To us, we are not heroes; we simply did what any of our men and women wearing the badge would have done given that situation.” See story on page 32

A favorite moment of the night for many was the performance of 14-year-old Jacob Kershaw of Albion. Kershaw, who is an eighth grader at Marshall Middle School, played a four-song set in the Underground Cafe and then was asked by organizers to play on the main stage. “He definitely could play,” said Event Coordinator Dee Russell. “Being a 14-yearold kid, he surprised me. He didn’t care that 500 people were watching him. He was just as comfortable as he could be.” After the three-minute blues song, the young man was met with the only standing ovation of the night. Columns Hail to the men, women who fight so we remain free

Editor’s Corner by John Hendler I was horrified when I first heard the news that Jordanian pilot Lt. Muath al-Kaseasbeh has been burned alive by ISIS. Somehow in my mind, and apparently in may other’s as well, this was a new despicable low for these Islamic extremists. Upon reading about what had happened online, I came across a link to view the video. Part of me had no interest whatsoever in watching, but another part of me thought about the movies the Nazis had made showing the various way they murdered Jews during the Holocaust. I hesitated for a moment before I clicked on the link. And there it was, a slick, Hollywood-like production complete with multiple angles, voiceovers and background music. To an ignorant viewer, they might have thought they were watching some action movie or TV drama that we’ve seen numerous times and have, sadly, as a society, become desensitized to the brutal burning of a human being. When the video was over, I was physically shaken. I was angry. After seeing this depravity, it is now crystal clear that these beasts have no limits or no human soul and thus, should be treated as the sub-human animals they are. The outrage was so great in Jordan that those who had questioned the country’s participation in the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS immediately did a 180 as King Abdullah vowing to wage a “harsh” war against ISIS. This video seems to have opened the eyes of some Muslim leaders that now know that they need to join the fight to bring down ISIS. This video needs to be shown by the broadcast and news networks so people can see what genuine evil looks like. It won’t just go away because we choose to ignore it. The day of reckoning will come for ISIS eventually; it would be in our nation’s interest and in the world’s interest to have that occur sooner rather than later. But, that would mean an aggressive campaign, similar to how the Americans treated the Axis powers following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and I don’t think the nation or the White House has the stomach for that at this time. I fear that eventually, we will have no choice but to use extreme force because the longer we wait, the worse it will get. To paraphrase the line from the old TV commercial, we can pay now or pay (more) later. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

By FRED JACOBS Publisher and CEO, J-Ad Graphics After listening to filmmaker Michael Moore and others condemn Chris Kyle, the late Navy SEAL whose story was told in the gripping movie, American Sniper, I feel compelled to weigh in with my own indignant response. Moore and people like Sheldon Richman, who represents the patriotic-sounding Future of Freedom Foundation, have called Kyle a coward because he used his marksmanship skills to shoot enemy forces in the back from hidden positions. Nevermind that Kyle’s targets were lethal threats, unseen by approaching American soldiers on the ground, or that some were Afghan civilians concealing bombs to be used against approaching American convoys. Calling Kyle and his fellow servicemen who are fighting terrorists throughout the Middle East is nothing short of outrageous. These men and women are willing to put their lives on the line to protect America and the values we cherish. They deserve our utmost and unreserved respect. The controversy was brought on by the release of the movie directed by Clint Eastwood, which stars Bradley Cooper as the most lethal sniper in U. S. military history. Watching the movie,

I felt there was so much more to gain from Kyle’s story than just his special skill with a gun. It was a story about the effects of war on our military personnel and their families. Plus, it hammered home the realization of just how serious these radicals can be when they use women and children as decoys and in battle. Kyle joined the Navy shortly after the 9/11 attacks on the U.S. because he felt compelled to help find the terrorists who killed more than 3,000 men and women on our soil. He was convinced he had something to give, and, due to his expert marksmanship, he was able to save countless lives of our servicemen during his four tours of duty, which earned him the reputation as “The Legend.” “It was my duty to shoot the enemy, and I don¹t regret it,” Kyle said in the movie. “My regrets are for the people I couldn’t save: Marines, soldiers, buddies. I’m not naïve, and I don¹t romanticize war. The worst moments of my life have come as a SEAL. But I can stand before God with a clear conscience about doing my job.” Thankfully, we still have Americans who voice their understanding of the difficult conflicts in war and provide their thanks and admiration to those who are called into it. “America’s fighting men and women sacrifice so much to ensure that our great nation stays free,” Allen Boyd, a for-

mer U.S. House of Representative who served on the Defense committee, has said. “We owe a debt of gratitude to the solders who have paid the ultimate price for this cause, as well as for those who are blessed enough to return from the battlefield unscathed.” As Americans, we’re supposed to be tolerant of one’s right to speak his or her mind. Yet, when I hear people like Moore and Richman condemn soldiers like Kyle calling him a coward, no less - it takes a great deal of patience for me to justify their right to say what they want, especially when I loathe what they stand for. Last week, Arizona Sen. John McCain got a taste of this foul perspective from anti-war protesters who disrupted a committee hearing he chaired. The committee was about to receive thoughts on global threats to our nation from former Secretary of State and U.S. diplomat Henry Kissinger. The protesters interrupted the proceedings to call for the prosecution of Kissinger for “global militarism” and war crimes during his tenure. When the protesters grew aggressive, flashing handcuffs in the face of Kissinger, McCain called on U.S. Capitol Police to remove the protesters from the hearing room. “From all of my colleagues, I’d like to apologize for allowing such disgraceful behavior towards a man who

Letters

served his country with the greatest distinction,” McCain said to Kissinger. “I apologize profusely.” Richman’s justification of his criticism of Kyle came, he said, from the fact that Kyle was saving the lives of American military personnel who invaded other people’s country, and that they were no threat to them or their fellow Americans back home. Have we forgotten how we felt just days after the 9/11 attacks when President George H. Bush stood among the rubble of the World Trade Center condemning the terrorists for what they did to us and promising Americans that we would hunt them down? The war on terrorism continues to grow more than a decade later - as we continue to fight these radical Muslims who hate what we stand for and will do whatever necessary to break our will and our bond as a nation. During Sunday’s “Meet the Press” television show, former Defense Secretary Bob Gates said, “It is unrealistic to say that the U.S. will ever destroy al Qaeda or the Taliban.” Gates went on to tell moderator Chuck Todd, “We’ve been after al Qaeda with all of the resources of the American military and intelligence community for 14 years now, and we haven’t destroyed it.”

Kudos to Tekonsha Animal Urgent Care for help To the Editor: Many of us have pets who are family. Our pet is a 6year-old Persian cat named Magglio. He is always waiting for us when we get home. Recently, he went for his annual checkup and vaccinations. Late in the afternoon, he started to get restless. His condition worsened until he started licking and chewing his paws. We checked his paws and found they were red and puffy. We

assumed it was a reaction to the vaccinations, but he was increasingly uncomfortable. We contacted Magglio’s veterinary office, but it was after hours. We were referred to Animal Urgent Care in Tekonsha. We called Animal Urgent Care and described the problem. We were offered a choice of self-help or we could take him in. Of course, we took him to Animal Urgent Care. There, Magglio found himself in an

unfamiliar place surrounded by people he didn’t know. The young lady checking us in took time to get acquainted with Magglio, get him comfortable and relaxed while we took care of the necessary paperwork. The veterinarian joined us and was quiet and gentle with our pet. She gave Magglio a thorough checkup to make a diagnosis. He received a shot to relieve his pain. The next day a report was

sent to Magglio’s veterinarian by Animal Urgent Care. After receiving the report, his veterinarian called to check up on him. If your pet needs care and it’s after hours, your clinic may refer you to Tekonsha Animal Urgent Care. Go with confidence. Your pet will receive excellent care. We are so glad they were available. Joyce and Marcia Furu, Charlotte

Great job to the Calhoun County Road Department To the Editor: I would like to thank the Calhoun County Road Department for the dedication and hard work each one put in this week. When we have a snowstorm like the one we had this past week, the Road Department works endless hours get-

ting our roads opened for us. As they are doing this for the community their family knows their loved one is out on the roads in some dangerous situations. Not every road can be first, some drives that a resident has cleared may have a pile of snow in it again or your mailbox may have come

off its post. The Calhoun County Road Department had the roads open in record time in my opinion. I just appreciate all that you do on the roads and in the office. Thank you. Doug Damon, Fredonia Township Supervisor

Thanks goes to NHS, library staff and AAUW To the Editor: On Jan. 23 and Jan. 24, the Marshall District Library hosted a Used Books Sale in partnership with the Marshall Chapter of the American Association of University Women. I would like to thank the many people in the community who attended this sale and supported both MDL programs and the AAUW Patrice Elms Scholarship.

I would particularly like to thank Shannon Clark from Marshall Public Schools for organizing a volunteer team of National Honor Society members to help with setting up. These courteous and responsible students, Katie Asselin, Dustin Dewitt, Megan Smith, Travis Mumaw, Laura Muggio and Braden Thompson, donated their time to set up thousands of

books in the library’s meeting room. Many thanks also to the members of AAUW of Marshall and other members of the Marshall District Library staff for taking their time to make this event successful. The next Used Books Sale will be held on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16. Hali Hammond, Library Assistant

LET OUR SERVICING PROS USE THE HUNTER HAWKEYE ELITE HIGH-DEFINITION DIGITAL IMAGING TECHNOLOGY TO ANALYZE AND PINPOINT ANY ALIGNMENT ISSUES YOUR VEHICLE MAY HAVE!

Why total alignment? 4 Reduced tire wear — Improper alignment is a major cause of premature tire wear. Over the years, a properly aligned vehicle can add thousands of miles to tire life. Many tires are replaced prematurely due to adverse wear. 4 Better gas mileage — Gas mileage improves as rolling resistance is minimized. Total alignment sets all four wheels parallel, which along with proper inflation, minimizes rolling resistance. 4 Improved handling — Does your car pull to one side? Do you have to turn the steering wheel to keep your car traveling straight ahead? Many handling problems can be corrected by total alignment service. 4 Safer driving — A suspension system inspection is part of the alignment procedure. This allows worn parts to be detected before they cause costly problems.

How high-definition digital imaging wheel alignment works Our shop uses four precision cameras to measure the position and orientation of targets mounted on each wheel of your car. The aligner uses this information to calculate your car’s current alignment measurements and then compares these measurements to the car manufacturer’s (O.E.M.) alignment specifications If your car’s wheel alignment is outside factory specifications, the aligner provides the technician with the exact information needed to make the proper adjustments and return the alignment angles to the manufacturer’s specifications.
