In The News: Four Marshall teachers lauded by U.S. Education Secretary At the start of the July 27 Board of Education meeting, Marshall Public Schools Superintendent Randy Davis informed the board that U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan had referenced Marshall Middle School in two blog postings in recent weeks. Columns Donald Trump is shaking the political landscape

Editor’s Corner by John Hendler Well, apparently the United States made Iran an offer they couldn’t refuse. Can you blame the Iranians? If your enemy were desperate to give you what you wanted, even if it meant waiting a few years, asking very little of you, wouldn’t you be a fool not to take them up on it? In his editorial on this page, Fred Jacobs hypothesizes about how negotiations on this deal would have gone had Donald Trump, with his honesty and frankness, been at the table. Isn’t that the type of person, at least in that instance, we would want negotiating for us instead of those just looking to make a deal at any cost? Iran gets an easing of those economic sanctions that actually had teeth, an infusion of billions of dollars as well as a 24-day warning period for inspections. That’s some of the things Iran received in this deal while they, for now (wink, wink), hold off on their ambitions of building a nuclear weapon. U.S. and Iranian officials also confirmed that no American nuclear inspectors will be permitted to enter Iran’s contested nuclear site under the parameters of a deal reached with world powers, according to statements made by American and Iranian officials. The United States has made a deal with an Iran whose Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei went into a tirade last week, blaming the American “arrogant powers” for getting in the way of the Muslim world’s duty to unite and destroy Israel, and chanting “Death to America. Death to Great Britain. Death to Israel.” Ben Stein, political writer and actor famous for his role in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, said last week: “What on Earth are we doing negotiating with a person who is trying to get a nuclear bomb and shouting ‘Death to America?’ What’s going on here?” There are many who have said that this deal is better than going to war, as if those were the only two options. Unfortunately, many people are prepared to believe anything if they think it keeps them out of war, much like Britain and Europe believed Chamberlain’s pronouncement of “Peace for our time.” This deal, if it holds, may “calm” things down for the near term. But long term, the chances are that Iran will be even more powerful and will eventually get the bomb. More from the “What’s going on here?” department: It has also been reported that Barack Obama has pledged the United States military to protect Iranian nuclear facilities against any and all aggressive moves from Israel and any other nations like Saudi Arabia who oppose the deal. But, take heart and fear not. We have our 21st century version of “Peace for our time.” Until next week, may the good news be yours.

By FRED JACOBS Publisher and CEO, J-Ad Graphics If you believe the established and traditional national media and political commentators, Donald Trump has little or no chance to become the Republican nominee for president. But, if you talk to people on the street, you find a growing number of average citizens who like what Trump says or at least appreciate the fact that he’s talking about issues that resonate. Some people are shocked by Trump’s brashness and some of the things he’s said about Sen. John McCain, President Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and even his fellow Republican candidates, but, when you think about it, Trump is no political animal. Instead, and refreshingly so, he’s a businessman who calls a spade a spade and who has little or no patience for people who talk about the issues but get little or nothing done. Think back to the last presidential election campaign. GOP contenders couldn’t get enough of Trump and were happy to accept his endorsement. But now that Trump is running and leading in the polls, the national media and political leaders are doing what they can to diminish his campaign, even going so far as to say that he isn’t presidential. Maybe we no longer recognize what is “presidential,” especially when we measure it against someone who doesn’t use a teleprompter to scrub his message politically correct and knows how to relate to the average citizen in the street. When you consider some of the bigger issues facing this country, Trump’s brand of frankness is playing well with an increasing number of voters. Who you would rather have negotiating with Iranian leaders over a nuclear deal and

the lifting of international and financial sanctions, President Obama or Donald Trump? If Trump had been leading these negotiations, he probably would have begun the talks with a demand that Iran release our four American hostages as a gesture of good faith. And when it comes to guarantees over compliance inspections in a nuclear deal, Trump would have set guidelines that would allow inspections any day, any time with no appointments necessary. I’m sure Trump doesn’t send a 30-day notice to inspect his hotels. His staff knows what’s expected, and everything must be up to company standards. When it comes to Iran’s nuclear facilities, Trump would most likely require a complete shutdown of all operations, forcing Iranians out of the bomb-making business altogether. The Obama administration, in the agreement it has negotiated with Iran, is allowing nuclear facilities to be kept intact with the promise that the Iranians won’t use them or will repurpose them during the duration of the deal. Trusting a group of people that espouses death to Americans and death to Israel is dangerous at best. There is more to the Trump phenomena that has political leaders on both sides of the aisle nervous, though. What’s shaking up the traditional political world is more about process than what the real-estate tycoon has to say. It’s a quiet earthquake that may finally rattle the silos that government at all levels have built by moving away from being thoughtful, deliberative bodies to forums of constant, rancourous debate with little or no action. In Michigan, we all know what that’s about. In May, state voters were asked to support a roads bill that state legislators dreamed up in the wee hours of last year’s lame-duck session. It was supposed to solve

our critical road and bridge infrastructure needs, but turned into a convoluted piece of legislation that resembled a political horse-trading project rather than a compromise bill to provide necessary revenue to begin to fix the state’s highway infrastructure. Deliberation lost out to debate and political gamesmanship. Voters spoke their dissatisfaction loud and clear, but did anyone hear the message? Once again, legislators came down this month to the last days before summer break and weren’t able to come up with a plan. So they left Lansing for the comforts of home. Is the growing support for Trump, then, any surprise? Michigan residents could feel the same frustration in Trump’s message to McCain, one of our nation’s prominent veterans. Trump thinks that McCain should have been prepared to lead the charge to fix the problems within the Veterans Administration along with solving homelessness in the veteran community. McCain may have been a hero in service to his country during the Vietnam War but, Trump was asking, where is his leadership now when the cries of need from our veterans are being ignored? And where is Congress on the issue of immigration? Trump’s comments about illegal Mexican immigrants were a little over the top and emotional, but we’ve been talking about immigration issues for generations — longer than most representatives have served in Congress — and we still don’t have the answers to this serious issue. Due to dysfunctional leadership plaguing government everywhere these days, a young woman, Kate Steinle, who earlier this month was walking on a San Francisco pier with her dad, was shot and killed by an undocumented immigrant who had been de-

ported five times but managed to get back into the country. So, when you hear commentators questioning Trump’s ability to be president, his leadership skills or his intention to run for the presidency, don’t let yourself get caught up in the hype. Think about what candidates have to say about the issues that continue to plague this nation. And be aware that the political leadership on both sides has failed to solve the big issues. It’s all about the debate. The sound bites and continuing divisiveness are shoving aside the honest deliberation that might lead to the sound results most of us are seeking. Americans are fed up with poor leadership. They want their elected officials to do what they were sent to do, whether on school boards or county boards, in state houses or Congress. They want them to solve problems. I frequently quote former president John F. Kennedy because he often said it best. On this topic, especially, I think he would have seen our current befuddlement clearly. “Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer,” Kennedy said. “Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future.” Trump is having an impact the conversation to fix the problems rather than ramping up the rhetoric and looking for someone to blame. As a nation, we face a number of serious issues that need good judgment from the brightest minds. We will never get the best results if we are bogged down with petty politics and pressure from special interests. It will only come if our leaders become more statesman-like, working together and looking for answers to some of the problems we face so we can move on to the next big deal.

Letters One more step towards total equality To the Editor: I was so pleased to see the published marriage licenses in the Battle Creek paper on July 22. This is the first time in Michigan all marriages have

been acknowledged this way. All of us should rejoice that this is one more step towards total equality for all. For the people who have fought this right for anyone to marry their partner in life,

regardless of their gender, I can only say I am sorry for you. I will keep you in my prayers. Please refer to Luke 6:37. King James Version: Judge not, and ye shall not

be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven. Kathy Schaberg Hamaker, Marshall

Placing water park downtown not a good idea To the Editor: As an architect enjoying employment in the state capital and a private citizen enjoying my daily life here in Marshall, I have been reading the development of the children's water park (among other civil improvements, i.e. disc golf) with some interest. I was particularly touched by a recent resident’s letter to the editor that was published some weeks back. He cited the proposed water park as a "frivolous" use of a public space. Although I don't agree with using that particular word, as I am a father, and any community with a multitude of family gathering spots is incredibly appealing,

I do have to agree with the gentleman that placing a children's water park in that particular location may not be the best idea. It would be next to a public and often busy roadway and this is less than ideal and reflects poor planning on the behalf of the community. As the recent development with young mister David Newman points out, motorists are not always paying attention and may be apt to be less so when traversing a generally accepted busy road. Children, caught up in the general joy of the carefree atmosphere those parks tend to produce, may find themselves wandering or running without much re-

gard for their immediate environment. I do agree that Marshall could use a children's water park. I do not think that the location in question is the best spot for one. There is, after all, a skate park with an abundance of available space for such an opportunity. Of course, if the good people of Marshall deem that this must be so, then it is the will of the people, and not any one individual, that determines the course of this great nation. J a mieson B. Ta ylor, Marshall

Blazers track team heads to Junior Olympics in Virginia

Allen Harmon Agency teams up with BC Bombers to strike out cancer By KRISTEN SHARPLEY Guest Writer

Allen Harmon and AutoOwners Insurance have teamed up with the Battle Creek Bombers baseball program for the second year in a row. This summer a Strike Out Cancer Night will take place on Sunday, Aug. 2. A year and a half ago, Allen Harmon, the owner of Allen Harmon Insurance Agency, was diagnosed with brain cancer and has been battling ever since. To make this event memorable, at every home game throughout the season, every time a Battle Creek Bomber pitcher gets a strikeout, Allen Harmon, Auto-Owners, Citizens and Fremont Insurance are donating $50 to Head For The Cure and the Hermelin Brain Tumor The Blazers track team, comprised of kids from Marshall, Albion and surrounding areas, will send approximately 20 athletes to the Junior Olympics this week in Norfolk, Va. The team, under the direction of coach Dan Davis, has been training this summer at the Marshall High School Track. Front row, from left: Jazeriah Short, Elijah Smith, Kevin Davis Jr., Raigen Horsfall, Korinne McDowell, Max McDowell, Kadeem McDowell, Zaire Davis and Ja'Rece Johnson. Center at Henry Ford Hospital (where Allen has been receiving treatment). The total donation will be presented in the form of a large check at the event on Aug. 2. Dr. Ian Lee, one of Henry Ford’s top neurosurgeons, will also be in attendance. The event will starts at 6:05 p.m. the CO Brown Stadium located at 1392 Capital Ave NE in Battle Creek. Admission is free and the first 1,000 people to show up will receive a cowbell. Also at the event, Harmon’s daughter Callie will be singing the Star Spangled Banner and a fireworks display will follow the game. For more information, call the Allen Harmon Insurance Agency office at 269441-5156.
