Council hears comments from both sides regarding Hospital Campus Overlay District
75
During a public hearing at Monday’s City Council meeting, a crowd of more than100 gathered in the City Hall chambers to share their thoughts about the proposed Hospital Campus Overlay District. The council heard recommendations including the approval of the Hospital and Neighborhood Committee’s plan; approval of the plan with recommendations made by the Marshall Planning Commission; and denial of the plan in its entirety to keep Marshall’s historical integrity intact. While many concerns were brought forward, one point was clear: “Emotions are high and we are facing some tenuous times,” said Oaklawn Hospital Board of Directors member Joe Palchak. Bus driver Carole Reynolds sees the end of the road After 38 years, Marshall Public Schools bus driver Carole Reynolds drove her last route on June 6. “I’ve enjoyed the people I’ve worked with for the last 38 years, and I think I’ve gone through more bosses and superintendents than anyone,” Reynolds joked. “But I’m done now.” Reynolds said her favorite part of her job was having the privilege to drive the special needs bus for 14 years. “If I still had my babies, I would still be driving, not retiring,” she said. This year Reynolds drove a regular route because the special needs bus was contracted out to Dean Transportation of Lansing. See story on page 52

After 60 years, man receives high school diploma Proving the truth of the adage that it’s never too late to be what you could have been, Hilmer “Joe” Fierke Jr. finally received his high school diploma at age 78, some 60 years after leaving Marshall High School to join the United States Air Force. Fierke received his diploma June 2 during Marshall High School’s 143rd commencement. See story on page 24
MHS girls varsity soccer wins second straight district title; Sees season end in regional semi final. Capping second half and overtime comebacks, the Marshall High School girls varsity soccer team, thanks to Chelsea Tobias’ three goals, defeated Delton-Kellogg on June 2 to give Marshall its second-straight district title. Three days later, the team saw its season end following a 2-1 loss to Grand Rapids South Christian in a Div. 3 semi final game. Also last week, MHS track and field athletes Kelsey Darling and Isaiah Fountaine earned All-State honors at the Div. 2 state meet in Grand Rapids. See sports section

What is your best memory with your father? Editor’s Corner
Father’s Day is June 17, and many people will be trying to find that perfect gift for Dad. But memories can provide some of the best gifts because they can be shared by all. The ad-visor&chronicle asked these six people to share their favorite memory of time spent with their dad.
by John Hendler Two items from the sports overflow department: Congratulations to Marshall High School assistant principal Nick Dent, who last week was named the school’s new boys varsity basketball head coach, replacing Dan Coddens, who announced his retirement in April. “Coaching has always been a passion,” said Dent, who up until two years ago, had held a coaching position at MHS since his arrival in 1995 and still plans to be the school’s assistant principal. “It’s been my goal to be varsity basketball coach at Marshall for a very long time and I thought it was something I thought I had to pursue.” Second item: Parents, kids bored already now that school has been out a couple of days? How about having them train for a triathlon, namely the Lyon Lake Junior Triathlon, which will take place for kids 614 July 21. Bob Voigt, president of BV and Associates, Inc. here in Marshall is sponsoring the event for the third straight year. Voight said the event started out as a “lark” two years ago because his young twins, then age 10, wanted to do a triathlon after watching their mom take part in the Coldwater minitriathlon. Not able to find such an event for kids nearby, Voight, on a friend’s suggestion, decided to hold the event at his home on Lyon Lake. That first year, 16 kids took part; last year that number was nearly 30. This year, he hopes to get close to 50 kids involved, which is free for participants. “It’s all about being healthy; it’s very youth oriented,” said Voight. “If I can get a kid to come out (and take part) instead of having them light up a cigarette, then I feel like I did a good thing.” For more information about the event or to register, go online to www.lyonlakejuniortriathalon.shutterfly.com. By the way, the extra ‘a” in the website address is not a typo. We now resume my regular column, already in progress…. Besides birthdays, nothing makes me feel older (and sadder) than the last day of the school year, because, not only am I realizing how old I am by the increasing speed of each school year, but I'm also seeing that my kids are one step closer to the “out” door and leaving me in their dust. With each passing year, I'm left asking, “It's June? When the heck did this happen?” I remember as a kid how slowly time would pass even just waiting for the school day to end (in Florida, and in an 80-degree classroom with no air conditioning),but now September to June seems like a blink of an eye. If only winter could pass by as quickly. And the past decade as slowly as those Florida school days. Life is full of contradictions. Whether we (or I) like it or not, time marches on (as country singer Tracy Lawrence sang), and the only thing that stays the same is that everything changes and all fighting it will do is wear you out while life passes you by. That said, could someone please slow down the hands of time? Even slightly? Until next week, may the good news be yours.

“Fishing for catfish with Big Daddy back at home in Palmyra on River Raisin. I now work at the Juvenile Home and all the kids know I call him ‘Big Daddy’ and ask how he’s doing.”
“My father and I used to race sailboats every Sunday morning on Gogoac Lake. Those were some wonderful times.”
“On Saturday morning my dad and I would go to the field after sporting events to look under the bleachers or to school yards with a metal detector and shovel. We found some interesting stuff including old coins and jewelry.”

“My dad’s Jeep was featured in a four-wheeler magazine five years ago. We got to go four-wheeling and camping in six states in the U.S. for a week. It was our first road trip together.”
“My dad is a retired mailman. When I was little he would come home for lunch and I was able to go up to an intersection near our house and ride back in the mail truck with him for lunch.”
“My dad would always make popcorn on the stove and since he worked at Post he would bring home Tang, so we would eat popcorn and drink Tang. That was our bonding time.”

Grateful for the local support to the Fountain Clinic
To the Editor: We at the Fountain Clinic would like to thank the preschoolers at Christ Lutheran Preschool and their teachers Pam Fry and Mary Pennington. Every year these little ones have a
run in the spring. They gather pledges from their friends and families and the proceeds are donated to the Fountain Clinic. The children take this run very seriously, and this year raised over $850 for our patients.
When we look back over the last 20 years, we realize that it is because of this community’s support, including our youngest members, that have made it possible for us to provide primary medical care to the
low income uninsured. Mary Jo Byrne, Executive Director, Fountain Clinic
Making our communities safer for our children To the Editor: I have spent most of my career working to help victims of crime. When I read about former Penn State University Assistant Football Coach Jerry Sandusky, it showed me people continue to have stereotypes about individuals who sexually abuse and the characteristics of this case challenge those stereotypes. Sandusky faces over 52 counts of sexual abuse against 10 boys over 15 years. I understand these allegations are hard to believe. I understand that an indictment of this magnitude would be a tragedy in any organization, but Penn
State and particularly, their football team, was known for all-American values of honor, integrity and hope. As the country watches this case unfold, I urge parents, families and organizations to talk about what they need to do to make our communities safer for children. I urge adults to find ways to get involved and learn the scope of sexual abuse. We know it takes a lot of strength to come forward. We can imagine that we would have done everything we could to protect these children. Now we have the opportunity to learn from this experience.
LETTER DEADLINE: Wednesday at NOON The ad-visor&chronicle reserves the right to edit letters for content, length, grammar and clarity.
We don’t have to wait. Start with opening the lines of communication. We can ask our church, synagogue, schools and other organizations if they have policies to protect children; if staff is aware of these policies; and if they know how to implement them on a day-to-day basis. Let’s use the Sandusky trial as a rallying point to act and to begin conversations with every local organization about what we can all do to make our communities safer for our children and teens. Thrilling comeback gives soccer district title Down 2-0 at half, Marshall comes back to tie twice and win in double OT over DeltonKellogg 4-3 on Chelsea Tobias’ hat trick; Season comes to an end after 2-1 defeat to Grand Rapids South Christian in Div. 3 regional semi final By JOHN HENDLER Sports Editor Even though the Marshall High School girls varsity soccer team saw its season come to an end June 5 after a 2-1 loss to Grand Rapids South Christian, there were few, if any, tears on the sideline as Marshall gave the its higher seeded opponent a run for its money. Down 2-0 and having been outplayed most of the contest, Marshall’s Sydney Reichenbaugh scored on a shot from 25 yards out to cut the deficit to one goal with just over eight minutes to play. During those final eight minutes, Marshall created several chances in a desperate attempt to tie the game but to no avail. Still, Harkey and his team appeared upbeat following the loss. “You’ve got to proud of our girls,” said Harkey. “They kept it down at the other end of the field, had some chances, got the ball into the box. It was a great effort. Even though we lost, I think it was a great ending to a great year.” Harkey has been around soccer for many years, but said he never had witnessed a game like the one that took place June 2 when the Marshall High School girls varsity soccer team came back to defeat Delton-Kellogg 4-3 in double overtime at Pennfield High School to win the district title for a second year in a row. “Most exciting game I’ve ever been a part of,” said Harkey. Marshall, down 2-0 at halftime, scored less than five minutes into the second half on a corner kick which resulted in a Delton own goal. Marshall, which had been outplayed in the first half, took over the game in the second half and held Delton to just one shot in the last 40 minutes of regulation. With 3:31 to play, Marshall freshman Chelsea Tobias tied the game (assist to Anyah Preston) 2-2 to force overtime. Seven minutes into the first overtime period (not sudden death) Delton retook the lead, 3-2, but in the closing seconds of that first overtime period, freshman Tristan Tobias, along the right side, passed inside to her cousin Chelsea Tobias, who, having gotten past the goalkeeper and defender , hit the wide open shot to tie the game again. “What a big lift that gave us going into the second overtime,” said Harkey. Three minutes into the second overtime, Tobias scored her third goal, which turned out to be the game winner. Coach Adrian Harkey hoists the district championship trophy, much to the delight of the Marshall players. photo by John Hendler
