In The News: Deal reached between Michigan, Enbridge over 2010 oil spill A company responsible for one of the largest inland oil spills in U.S. history will restore or create 300 acres of wetlands as part of a sweeping agreement to improve the Kalamazoo River watershed in southwestern Michigan, state officials said. A settlement between the state and Enbridge Energy filed in Calhoun County court May 12, nearly five years after a broken pipeline released more than 800,000 gallons of oil, requires the company to continue to monitor the impacts of the spill on the environment. The company also agreed to spend $75 million, much of it on various projects, including a dam removal and improved access to boating and fishing on the river.

This year’s proposed budget is approximately $29.2 million and would include two new operating budgets for the Marshall Area Farmers Market and the Marshall Regional Law Enforcement Center.

It will begin behind the skate park and wrap through the wooded areas of Ketchum Park.

Columns Great ideas don’t require big price tags Editor’s Corner by John Hendler At last week’s Marshall High School Departmental Honors Luncheon, Rotary President Dan Stulberg asked some fellow Rotarians to share who their favorite teachers were from when they were kids. That got me thinking about who my favorite teachers were and their influence on me to this day. That reminded me of a Henry James quote in which the historian said, “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” Mr. Garlitz was my fourth grade teacher and my all-time favorite. In 1973, having started the school year in another class, I went to the principal and asked to be put in a more challenging class as my current classmates spent the majority of their days playing with clay or copying words out of the dictionary. “Be careful what you wish for,” she told me and transferred me to Mr. Garlitz’s class. That class, I would soon learn, was half fourth graders and half fifth graders and changed classrooms and subjects with other fifth grade teachers. Essentially, I went from completing third grade to learning at a fifth-grade level and it was sorely apparent early on I was way out of my league. Be careful what you wish for. I struggled terribly with completing the reading exercises known as SRA. Does anybody remember those? For the first marking period, I earned the equivalent of an F. For the first time in my elementary school career, I was having real difficulty. That was when Mr. Garlitz stepped in. If you know the former Saturday Night Live cast member Jon Lovitz, then you have an idea how Mr. Garlitz looked and acted. He was the cool, fun teacher who let us watch the TV game show Jackpot every day after lunch. He made funny jokes all the time, sometimes at our own expense, but he was never mean. Still, he took his job very seriously. At the end of school one day, he took me aside and told me to come in 30 minutes early the next morning. I asked if I was in trouble. He said no. He then told me that he saw the potential in me to be a really good student and told me it was his responsibility to make sure that happened. He said he believed in me and he was going to work with me until I believed in myself. We met prior to school three days each week and he helped me improve my grade to the equivalent of a C for the next marking period. By the second half of the school year, I was making an A. Mr. Garlitz let me know he believed in me and he taught me that hard work, self-discipline and believing in yourself will pay off in the end. Following the Rotary luncheon, I went on Facebook and found Mr. Garlitz’s profile. For the first time in over 40 years, I saw his face. He was, naturally, markedly older, but those kind eyes and smile were still there. I sent him a message to say hello when I noticed that he had not posted anything in a year. He would probably be at least 80 now, and I fear that he may no longer be with us. So, the for the last few days, I’ve felt guilty that I waited all these years to reach out to him. I hold out hope that I may hear from him. If you’ve been thinking about reaching out to a long-lost teacher (or friend or family member for that matter), do it. Let them know what they meant to you while you still have the chance. Until next week, may the good news be yours.
By FRED JACOBS Publisher and CEO, J-Ad Graphics When I think back to some of the sharpest business people I’ve known over the years, I realize they all have one common trait that led to their success: They were always on the lookout for great ideas to bring customers in to their places of business. This past Saturday, a small group from Nashville showed that same magic. From what started as just a wild idea, a few communityminded activists put their town into the Guinness World Records by attracting thousands of people to sample the longest ice cream sundae bar ever assembled — and right down the middle of M-66. More than 400 gallons of Moo-ville vanilla ice cream, 56 gallons of strawberries, 28 gallons of chocolate syrup, 72 cans of whipped cream and 3,600 cherries were used to top the sundae. “The event is not about ice cream,” said urban activist and author Peter Kageyama last week as organizers were eyeing the weather forecast; “that is just a nice sweet benefit. This is about coming together around an idea. Sometimes the idea is big and important; sometimes it is small and fun. Sometimes, like this one, it is big and fun. People need reasons to come together and simply celebrate the togetherness of being in a community. The sundae is a
great way to do that.” Great ideas sometimes take a lot of people to be successful, and the longest sundae took more than 190 volunteers to make it all possible. What’s especially exciting is that Saturday’s sundae world record event is indicative of a larger community promotion idea and it, too, has gathered some capable and hard-working volunteers. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, concerned citizens can change the world,” said cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead. “Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Saturday’s sundae in Nashville just goes to prove that you don’t have to come up with some revolutionary idea that costs thousands of dollars to attract people. Something simple might be the ticket. Maybe state leaders should take that into mind and head back to the drawing board to find a way to fund road repairs. It didn’t take state legislators long to realize the big mistake they had made in putting the burden to solve the problem of deteriorating roads on the backs of Michigan voters. As the May 5 election came closer, experts warned that the passage of Proposal 1 wasn’t looking good, and the message from voters to state leaders was loud and clear: “Don’t look to us to solve the problem by sending us a convoluted ballot pro-
posal that anyone with any common sense can see has little or no chance of passage.” So here we go again. After our thoughtful legislators put off the decision to fund road repairs for more than six years, they’re now, again, looking for a silver bullet to solve the crisis. Some are scouring the budget looking for low-hanging fruit while others are calling for a tax increase earmarked for roads. According to news reports, House Republicans could introduce legislation to boost road funding later this week. Did these legislators really hear what voters said last week? And, as they line up behind party leaders to ready possible solutions, are they really listening now? Do they realize that a solution to this crisis goes beyond party politics? Some legislators have their sights on Michigan’s Catastrophic Claims Fund which is reported to have more than $14 billion in reserve. Even legislators don’t know for certain what this fund holds. Some Michigan news agencies report as much as $17 billion available to pay insurance companies that have claims exceeding $530,000. This is money the state already collected from drivers through their auto insurance, so why not use some of the excess funds for roads? The legislature would have to come up with a formula to assure they have the funds to pay out future claims, but how many billions do they
Letters
need? A number of other ideas bantered about in recent months also could help solve the problem, such as turning the state’s major highways into toll roads. And how about leasing any or all of the state’s interstate highway welcome centers to some high-profile fast-food operations? Originally, our legislators even talked about a tax at the wholesale level for gas, along with increasing vehicle registration fees. Regardless of the solution they eventually suggest, if legislators expect to find the necessary funds, they must start the debate unhindered by party politics. We don’t think about our roads politically — we just want to travel from one place to the next without potholes and serious damage to our vehicles. It’s a serious issue that has been bantered around for years with no resolution. Contact your state legislators and remind them that they have a job to finish before they leave for summer break. It’s time leaders work together to find the answers once and for all by putting something in place before the end of another construction season. This is not rocket science. If legislators can’t solve the simple things, how can they deal with the big issues? It’s time legislators put together a reasonable package that will work best for Michigan’s motorists.

MACS is thankful for continued community support To the Editor: April 25 was an exciting and fun day for MACS as the Dark Horse Brewing Company held the annual “Smoke Off” fundraiser for our organization. Exciting, yes! Fun, yes! And a great day to be out and about with friends and family. When you put it all together, it was indeed a fantastic day. MACS sincerely appreciates the support of owners Aaron and Cally Morse, Taproom Manager Travis Glenn, the Dark Horse staff for all the extra effort and work put into this event, and of course the folks who did all the grilling fixing the great
food. Not to forget, all the folks attending the Smoke Off, who bought tickets and made donations. Thank you. MACS is especially thankful for the continued support of our organization, and our volunteers who help families in Marshall when there is a need. Helping with food, clothing, utility bills and other emergency needs can be overwhelming, but knowing we have the support of so many others in our community this makes Marshall the special place it is. Dark Horse is a family business with a big heart and willing to be of help when needed. Thank you
from the MACS Board and volunteers. We also want to send many thanks to all who participated in and made donations to the MACS food pantry on May 9. The Marshall Post Office mail carriers, Postmaster Beth Martin and her staff did a tremendous job bring us well over 1,100 bags/boxes of food on Saturday. This annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food campaign is nationwide, and we are thrilled to be the recipient of this wonderful gift. Our pantry stays busy, and we give out free food almost every day. The need is here in Marshall, as it is in other parts
of the state and country, and we greatly appreciate all the extra work and effort that goes into the food campaign so we can respond to the needs of Marshall families. As volunteers we know it may sometimes be hard to ask for help, but the generous donations by folks in our area make it possible for MACS to help. Thank you all for your food donations to the pantry, and know that we, as volunteers, will do our best giving the food to families in need. What a wonderful gift to many families. Harriet Carroll, MACS President
Marshall Carriage Co. represents American entrepreneurship To the Editor: Thank you for the article regarding the Marshall Carriage Company. I find it bewildering and ironic that City Hall is trying to eliminate a key contributor to a town that thrives on cultivating an atmosphere of small town genteel and historical relevance. Marshall Carriage Co. is a highlight for any visitor to Marshall as well as to residents that live along its tour paths. As one of those residents, I spend my spring, summer and fall
waving and smiling to tourists, young and old, as they enjoy authentic Marshall stories and sights. My children and I listen for the clack of horse hooves and the laughter and chatter that typically accompany it. We have missed those sounds, those smiles and that chatter this spring. Brian and his team are absolute assets to this community. His entrepreneurial spirit, musical talents and neighborly smile enrich all of us. To suggest that Marshall Carriage Co. move off of Main St./Michigan Ave.
is both asinine and shortsighted. Main St. is literally that, and to not continue to maintain high visibility for visitors/prospective clients would negatively impede the business. Marshall Carriage Co. represents good old American entrepreneurship and hard work, and I am an absolute supporter of them having a designated space on Michigan Ave. to conduct their business. Marshall holds fire station dedication By CORINNE HARTER Staff Writer
On May 9, nearly 150 people gathered at the new Marshall Fire Department
station No. 12, 1201 Arms St., for a ribbon cutting, tours and open house to celebrate the new facility. “As your mayor, I would like to welcome and thank

everyone for attending,” said Marshall Mayor Jack Reed. “Certainly, this is a very special day here in Marshall. All of us, especially our firefighters, past and present, have dreamed of this day, never losing faith and always positive that we would one day be standing here.” On April 13, the firefighters moved into the new building, putting the old “temporary” fire hall to rest after 40 years. “We are very fortunate to

have this facility,” said Department of Public Safety Director Jim Schwartz. “All we can say is thank the community and thank you to the City Council for their support. We are glad to be able to continue to serve.” Since moving in two weeks ago, Schwartz said, “the morale is much better now that we have a place built for firefighters.” The new 14,000 squarefoot facility is equipped with a pull through; a five- truck apparatus bay; a community room/training room; adequate living space for seven full-time firefighters; updated technology capabilities, including wireless throughout the building; designated equipment storage; a twostory training space for repelling and indoor confined space training. “I have heard many of you say, ‘Thank you for giving us a new home,’” Reed said. “This is a home, a family, a community, and I think it is important to take just a minute to recognize them and say thank you for every day - for every day you go out there and serve our great city of Marshall, never knowing what each day may bring. You are called to serve and protect. That could be saving a cat from a tree or wrapping your arms around someone to assure them that

Prayer for Marshall’s firefighters Dear Lord, We ask you today to bless this house, this Fire Hall, as a safe harbor for our men and women in uniform to be at peace, to collect their thoughts, to be the community of support for each other in times of need. Guide and protect our firefighters to be the skilled responders to our community. Lord, we ask you to bring them home safely at the end of each day. Today Lord, we also ask the citizens of Marshall to keep them in their daily prayers and to support their pursuit to serve and protect. In your Son’s name we pray, Amen. they are in good hands and everything is fine. For this, we say thank you.” Reed also thanked the community for their support with the project. “I would like to say thank you to the great citizens of Marshall for making this a reality,” he said. “Thank you again for your attendance and support here today. As mayor of the city of Marshall, I am honored to dedicate the new city of Marshall Fire Hall No. 12. May it last us longer than our temporary hall ever did.
Thank you all for your support in making today a reality.” At the event, Reed recognized those who had a hand in the project, including the past and present City Council members and mayors; the Dobbins family, who donated the land for the new building; City Manager Tom Tarkiewicz; Schwartz; C2AE for the design; and Clarke Construction for coming in on time and under budget.
