See ballot language on page 54 MHS grad in Nepal during earthquake On April 25, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Kathmandu, Nepal, causing major destruction and killing at least 5,000 people. Spencer Townsend, a 2008 Marshall High School graduate, who has been living in Thailand, was in Lukla, Nepal about 85 miles from Kathmandu when the earthquake hit. See story on page 13 ‘A trip of a lifetime’: Honor Flight sends 69 veteran to Washington, D.C. World War II veteran Howard Burnett of Marshall said the Honor Flight trip on April 25 was an emotional reminder of his sacrifice. “When a little 7-yearold girl came up and shook my hand and said, ‘I’m so proud of your service,’ that blew me away; I couldn’t take it,” he said. Burnett was one of 69 veterans who traveled on the Talons Out Honor Flight Mission IV on an allexpense paid, one-day trip to Washington, D.C. where veterans are honored for their sacrifices and are able to spend the day reflecting at the war memorials in the nation’s capital. Also on the trip were Tekonsha veterans Ernest “Ernie” Waffle and Vernon “Pete” Geer. See story on page 46 Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship received by Asher Wertheimer and Breanna Hawkins Asher Wertheimer and Breanna Hawkins, both 16, have received Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange scholarships to spend the 2014-15 school year in Germany. They applied through the local Youth For Understanding coordinator Tom Woods. The program accepts only 250 students nation-wide, 50 of whom are selected from a six-state region including Michigan. Normally approximately 100 students apply from the Midwest. See story on page 22 The comeback kid: MHS ballplayer Alex Walton Just over seven months ago on Sept. 19, Marshall High School varsity quarterback Alex Walton took a hit out of the pocket versus Pennfield and knew right away something was very wrong with his left leg. As it turned out, Walton suffered a broken tibia and ankle and his first thought was that he would not be able to play baseball in the spring. Following surgery and winter rehab, Walton is back on the field and is looking forward to college baseball next year. See sports section on pages 39-41
