Fire severely injures woman at Marshall House Apartments Marshall House Apartment residents were evacuated on the morning of March 13 after a fire broke out on the the second floor of the senior apartment complex on Spruce St. “When I saw smoke billowing from the door, I tried to gain entrance to the apartment, but the smoke was way too rich,” said Marshall House Apartments Administrator John Rodgers. “I got downstairs as fast as possible and called 911.” The apartment resident, a 63-year-old woman, was transported to Bronson Hospital with severe burns and was listed in critical condition. More than 90 Marshall House residents were displaced to the Public Services Building until late Tuesday afternoon. At this time, the cause of the fire remains under investigation. How are you coping with the time change? Daylight Savings Time went into effect on March 11 at 2 a.m. Since losing an hour, how has the time change affected your sleep patterns or daily activities?
Editor’s Corner by John Hendler For many Marshall High School students, it was quite the memorable week. Following its first district title in three seasons, the girls varsity basketball team won its first regional title under coach Sal Konkle after an amazing, come-from-behind performance to defeat Father Gabriel Richard of Ann Arbor in one of the most exciting games I’ve ever witnessed. In the state quarterfinals, Marshall showed they definitely belonged, fighting the good fight against defending champion Dearborn Divine Child before falling 47-34. The boys varsity team got hot at the right time and put together a four-game post season winning streak that included another district championship and a regional title game appearance. Speaking of hot, how about that fabulous weather last week? But wait, there’s more. Freshman Henry Swett claimed Marshall’s first state title in an individual sport in three decades while winning the Div. 3 state diving title by nearly 40 points. Do I hear repeat? Or four-peat? Henry and his six Marshall swimming teammates placed 15th overall at the state meet held at Oakland University. Although not technically involved in a competitive “sport,” the Marshall High School Marching Band experienced its own type of March Madness last week as the band had the honor of performing at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom before tens of thousands on March 12. As a chaperone on the trip, it was incredibly exciting to see the band (as well as my son) make its way up Main Street U.S.A. toward Cinderella’s Castle. As exciting as it may have been for me and the other parents to see, I’m sure the kids will lock that memory away forever as they marched and performed on perhaps the world’s biggest stage. Another memory they will take away from trip (for better or worse) are the pair of 25-hour bus trips to and from Florida. (What marathons those were. My back should get an award for not going out on me.) Congratulations to the band and to Band Director Jeremy Root for a job well done. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

“I saw the sun rise this morning. That was kind of cool. It’s nice having a few more hours of sunlight, although I feel like I was cheated out of an hour of my vacation.”
“It hasn’t affected my sleep much. I still have have to get my kids to school in the morning. I like feeling like I have a longer day though. I can get more done at night.”
“I’ve been a lot more tired. On Monday, I found it hard to focus to get anything done. I spent a lot of time looking at stories about Daylight Savings Time.”
Kyle Krebill, Grand Rapids
Adam Langford, Marshall
Chris Sheldon, Springport
“I haven’t seen much change. I’m in the process of moving and my sleeping patterns have been off whack anyway.”
“The hour less of sleep has affected me. I’ve going to bed late and getting up early to study for my exams at KCC. I would have appreciated the extra hour.”
“I feel like I’m losing sleep, but I’m loving the warm weather. I don’t really understand why we do the time change anyway.”

In a time of need, ‘you did well Marshall’ To the Editor: When thinking about the events that happened so quickly on Tuesday, March 13, one has to give thanks that so many people were helped, and so many came out to help. The fire early morning at Marshall House Apartments brought out the best in people, all across the city of Marshall: Marshall House staff, Marshal city services—police, fire, ambulance, public works, recre-
ation—too numerous to name them all. Family Fare and Schuler’s Restaurant gave generously all the food and refreshing drinks that were needed by residents and volunteers for a sixhour period. Coffee was brought in from convenience stores so willing to share. You did real well, Marshall. Marshall cares for its older adults, we know that. The residents at Marshall House Apartments were un-
der duress but they came through so graciously themselves. I heard no complaining, only thanks. And they were fun to be with and get to know. “Sometimes” a little change of pace can be an exciting thing, and they came through well, pets and all. We know that one resident was admitted to Oaklawn Hospital with burns on her body. Let’s pray that her spirits and needs are uplifted. Whatever the cause
of the fire, this person is one of us and is to be supported. And Oaklawn was on standby to care for anyone that needed aid. Calhoun County Emergency Services, Calhoun County Senior Services, the Area Agency on Aging 3B and Senior Health Partners were ready to assist in any ways we could. But you did well, Marshall. Carl A. Gibson, Calhoun County Senior Services Manager
Share thoughts on overlay district with city council To the Editor: I would like to thank Corinne Kellogg for her coverage of the Planning Commission’s meeting concerning the Hospital Campus Overlay district, which was published in the ad-visor&chronicle on March 10 (page 48). I felt this article was the first time that the general public was able to be heard. The people on the Hospital and Neighborhood Committee worked
hard. A lot of money and time was spent and Ken Jendryka did a good job of keeping things going smoothly meeting after meeting. However, because there were only two people representing the neighborhood, the final Overlay District put in jeopardy all of the housed on the fringe of the new district. With the new recommended boundaries set forth by the Marshall Planning Commission, the
neighborhoods around the Hospital now have a buffer zone. You can go to the Planning Commission’s web site and see what you think of the plan. If you think it is a viable plan, good for the hospital and good for the city, then let our mayor and council members know what you think. Jo Ann Dickey, Marshall
Norlander meets the needs of Calhoun County To the Editor: I have worked with Anne Norlander for 23 years. Anne demonstrates daily that her focus is about serving citizens of Calhoun County and meeting their needs. Anne has the wisdom, vi-
sion and courage to keep the Clerk and Register of Deeds office moving forward. Over three million pages of land documents have been converted from microfilm to digital image and can be retrieved online. Birth, death, marriage and assumed name
applications forms are online as a convenience as well. Anne continues to research more efficient and cost effective ways to deliver services to Calhoun County residents. I am proud to be part of Anne’s team and couldn’t
be more pleased that she has decided to seek re-election. She is a great Clerk and Register of Deeds, and I believe Anne has earned our support and vote. Diane Withers, Battle Creek

Diver Henry Swett wins state title By CORINNE KELLOGG Staff Writer
Six Marshall High School swimmers traveled to the Dis. 3 state swim meet held March 9-10 at Oakland University and one came home a victor. Diver Henry Swett won first place, beating the second place finisher by 38 points. “When the competition began, Henry was extremely focused,” said coach Terry Howard. “He is an exceptional diver who has worked very hard for this. He truly deserves to be a state cham-
pion.” Howard said Swett is not only a superb diver, but a person of exemplary character. “It has been a wonderful season,” he said. “It has been a joy to coach him, and I look forward to coaching him in the years to come and watching his further accomplishments in and out of the pool.” Swett, along with his teammates Mack Preston, Stuart Murch, Tanner Vaughn, Tyler Macfarland, Blake Blair and Cam Ragan, placed 15th overall at the meet.

After winning district, boys lose regional final The Marshall High School boys varsity basketball team saw its season come to a close Wednesday night following an 82-33 loss to defending Class B champion Lansing Sexton in a regional final game in Jackson. The loss ended a four-game winning streak and left Marshall with a final record of 14-11. Marshall advanced to the regional title game after defeating Stockbridge 52-47 on March 12. On March 9, Marshall claimed its fourth district title in five seasons following a 71-58 victory over Olivet.

Marshall girls ousted in quarterfinal Team finishes memorable season 19-7 with district, regional titles By JOHN HENDLER News Editor What a ride it was. The Marshall High School girls varsity basketball team saw its deepest post season run in decades come to an end March 13 in Ann Arbor after a 47-34 loss to the defending Class B champion Dearborn Divine Child a state quarterfinal game. The loss snapped Marshall’s five-game winning streak as the team finished with a season record of 197 that also saw them win a district and regional title. “I thought that our girls played extremely hard on Tuesday,” said Marshall coach Sal Konkle. “They definitely felt that they could compete and it showed on the court. They didn’t back down, and I was very proud of their efforts.” Konkle said she saw signs of what kind of season this could be early on. “Throughout the year I have said that the girls had a great summer and we had a lot of potential,” she said. “We probably had some doubters during the season but I think we made believers out of most people. The girls’ positive attitudes and work ethic were outstanding and instrumental to our success. After a few of our losses, they could have easily quit but they didn’t. They practiced harder and learned from the mistakes we had made which is what a season is all about:.improving. We improved tremendously from start to finish.” Konkle points out that

this was only the fourth team from MHS to win a regional championship (and was Konkle’s first as coach). “This is a special group of girls that I will miss dearly,” said Konkle. “ We had several girls who didn’t get much court time, and yet they worked their tails off so that we could succeed. This group really epitomized the word team...There have been more talented teams but this team improved the most from start to finish and found ways to win big games through their hard work and teamwork.”
