When LochenHeath Golf Club opened in 2001, it was greeted with great fanfare and reviews. The panoramic views of Grand Traverse Bay, rolling terrain, exceptional length, and dramatic Scottishstyle bunkering made LochenHeath the player's choice in Traverse City. LochenHeath was designed within a 600-acre cherry orchard right in the heart of America's Cherry Capital. The course rolls through the trees yet offers generous landing areas. The sixth hole was placed on the water's edge of Grand Traverse Bay and 16 of the 18 holes offer visuals settings of the bay. In 2004, architect Steve Smyers was called back to replace two holes, offering the course strategic expansion. While on site, he softened the green complexes, widened landing areas and added length to the championship tees. The changes made LochenHeath more playable for every caliber of golfer. This spring, course modifications will be made to increase player enjoyment. The practice facility is second to none in Michigan with target greens and bunkers dotting the landing area. There are two large putting greens as well a massive green for sand trap practice and one for approach and chipping. Multidirectional tees, a practice fairway bunker, and the entire practice area overlook the bay.

The pro shop and restaurant are perched on the bluff with outstanding views of the bay, most notably from the large, full-service deck. Under the expert guidance of Chef Joseph George, LochenHeath offers exceptional food for lunch and dinner along with beverage cart service every day. If your group wants a special meal, not found on the menu, our culinary staff will not disappoint while providing the best service in Northern Michigan. In 2012, LochenHeath will be opening an Event Pavilion to host conferences, banquets, and receptions. The pavilion features a walk out patio with stunning panoramic views of Northern Michigan. LochenHeath is more than a beautiful golf course and a wonderful facility-the people who play and live at LochenHeath make you feel like you are part of the family. Employees pride themselves on exemplary service and excellent course conditioning, just what you'd expect of General Manager, Mike Husby, a 38-year career professional. Mike puts his stamp of solid customer service on each aspect of the facility, which makes playing LochenHeath even more of a special day. Now that LochenHeath is a public venue, you can experience the Husby touch firsthand. Come Join Us and Discover an Entirely New Game! www.lochenheath.com
From the President… Dear Fellow Golfers, Yikes! How many days have we had 40 plus degrees in January this year? I was out on my motorcycle yesterday and while riding by Mt Holly there were people skiing, as well as people hitting balls outside. If I had been up early enough I could have done all three that day. Gotta love it! How about updates on changes for the 2012 season. The Board has been busy planning and several changes are on the way. The on-line and snail mail registration this year will give players the option of selecting how many of the Championship Series Events you would like to play. This is a big change from years past. In the Championship Series Events, bonus Honor Roll points will be awarded
to the top 5 finishers in the Championship Division. This reward will be for those players that play all Championship Series Events. The same opportunity also exists for Net and Senior players, which can help them receive an invitation to the Deyak Invitational in September. We sent out a survey about the State Match Play and received a very high response rate. We appreciate all your comments and suggestions. The two main suggestions that came from that survey were to either hold the tournament up north (many locations suggested) or hold it locally in the Metro Detroit area. The Board eventually decided to break with a long-standing tradition to move the tournament into the Metro Detroit area. Based on the comments from everyone, we are expecting the State Match Play will draw a lot of interest so get your entry in early this year. Please note that
2
the entry cost is up slightly but please realize that carts are now included with each round. No additional expense for carts. The Michigan Publinx Medal Play Championship will move over to Pheasant Run Golf Course in Canton this year. The tournament will be carts only, so we put the cost of the carts into the entry fee, which reflects the $30 increase in entry fee. The entry fee will include all 54 holes along with driving range facilities. We have sent out two coupons recently, which we call “Pub Perks”. One was to Miles of Golf for a club fitting. If you have not done that, you are missing a great opportunity. Many of our members have used the service over the years, and it has helped their games tremendously. Anatomy of a Publinxer Regrowth of the Game One Amateur at a Time Society is changing and the economy is not what it once was. The man with the “swoosh” on his hat that brought crowds of people to golf may not be the same man he was, in the competitive sense. One thing that has not changed is the game of golf. Sure technology has tried to enhance the average player’s ability, but the game has not changed. It is still 18 holes and the lowest score is the optimal result. But why are we running away from the game? High end golf courses are still high end, but the remaining courses are improving quickly due to better controlled budgets and very good superintendents that are doing more with less. I personally went from being a team player at one of the highest end public golf courses in the Orchards to a team at a city course called Fox Creek. I thought immediately there was going to be a fall off in quality, but boy was I wrong! Sure it is 6700 yards compared to 7000+ yards at the Orchards, but the greens are always in great shape and the fairways are always well manicured. What more can the average public player ask for? Why are we losing peo-
mentioned before how data is instantly available at our fingertips, but I think we have also become used to the ease of trying to “buy” a better game. Each year the equipment manufacturers unveil the newest equipment that will help improve distance, reduce spin, and straighten out drives. When will it ever get back to the fact that we still need to practice to actually “improve”? I can see people getting frustrated because their purchases do not give instant gratification or improvement. Instead of buy, buy, buy we should recommit to getting better through practice, practice, practice. Again easier said than done, but all the more gratifying when you get better through effort. How fun would it be to hit the ball farther with a two-year old driver then your friend that has the latest technology? The ribbing can be endless and make things more fun, golf provides competition within competition, longest drives, greens in regulation, so on. You can challenge your network of friends on more than just score. In order to accomplish these internal goals you start by checking our egos at the door and ask for help. Ask a friend to take video of your
ple from this game and not continuously growing? I have my theories on why this may be happening and the easy answer is money but I believed the most prevalent is the time commitment to play an average round. We have turned the game we enjoy playing from a structured 4 hour activity to one that can take from anywhere from 5 to 6 hours. We are now a society that has data streaming at us from multiple directions from smart cell phones to a high speed internet available almost anywhere. With everything coming at us so fast why can’t we play golf the same way? I believe that people don’t want to sacrifice the time anymore. Even in four hours you can do an unlimited amount of things elsewhere. This is where I feel we need to take stock in our daily lives, we need a break! Golf gives us that break, golf gives us a respite to enjoy fresh air, get some exercise if we walk, and enjoy the company of friends with a little competition to spark our interests if we choose to. Another theory I have is the instant gratification that we have become accustomed to. I

swing, consult your local PGA pro, upload your swing to a golf improvement website, there are countless ways that we have to get better if we choose to do so. I ask the readership, how do we fall back in love with this game? There are diehard players that won’t go away, which is great. How do we attract the people that are on the fence? You the public have answers and we want to hear them. I have written 5 of these articles and the topics have gone all over the map mostly my pursuit to get better through whatever means necessary and I want to reach out again to whoever may read this to provide me your thoughts, how do you get better, what you focus on, and how do we get your non golfing friends engaged? I would enjoy reading those and taking the best of them and adding them to my game or relay that out to the general public. Please feel free to submit your stories, tips, article ideas to mipublinx@gmail.com. Best of luck in the new season!

Principal Changes To The Rules Of Golf Rule 6-3a. Time of Starting Rule 6-3a is amended to provide that the penalty for starting late, but within five minutes of the starting time, is reduced from disqualification to loss of the first hole in match play or two strokes at the first hole in stroke play. Previously this penalty reduction could be introduced as a condition of competition.
This book contains the Rules of Golf, which will be effective worldwide from January 1, 2012. It represents the culmination of four years work by the United States Golf Association (USGA) and R&A Rules Limited, following consultation with other golfing bodies throughout the world. While it is considered important that the Rules be faithful to their historical principles, they must be clear, comprehensive and relevant to today’s game, and the penalties must be appropriate. The Rules need regular review to ensure these goals are met. This set of Rules is the latest stage of this evolution.
Rule 12-1. Seeing Ball; Searching for Ball Rule 12-1 is reformatted for clarity. In addition, it is amended to (i) permit a player to search for his ball anywhere on the course when it may be covered by sand and to clarify that there is no penalty if the ball is moved in these circumstances, and (ii) apply a penalty of one stroke under Rule 18-2a if a player moves his ball in a hazard when searching for it when it is believed to be covered by loose impediments.
Both the USGA and R&A Rules Limited wish to preserve the integrity of golf at all levels and to stress the importance of respect for and adherence to the Rules. We express our grateful thanks not only for the work done by our respective committees, but also to those other people whose varied contributions have made this revision possible.
Rule 13-4. Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions Exception 2 to Rule 13-4 is amended to permit a player to smooth sand or soil in a hazard at any time, including before playing from that hazard, provided it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and Rule 13-2 is not breached.
Glen D. Nager, Chairman, Rules of Golf Committee Alan W.J. Holmes, Chairman, Rules of Golf Committee United States Golf Association R&A Rules Limited September 2011
Rule 18-2b. Ball Moving After Address A new Exception is added that exonerates the player from penalty if his ball moves after it has been addressed when it is known or virtually certain that he did not cause the ball to move. For example, if it is a gust of wind that moves the ball after it has been addressed, there is no penalty and the ball is played from its new position.
Principal Changes Introduced in the 2012 Code Rules of Golf Definitions ADDRESSING THE BALL The Definition is amended so that a player has addressed the ball simply by grounding his club immediately in front of or behind the ball, regardless of whether or not he has taken his stance. Therefore, the Rules generally no longer provide for a player addressing the ball in a hazard. (See also related change to Rule 18-2b)
Rule 19-1. Ball in Motion Deflected or Stopped; By Outside Agency The note is expanded to prescribe the various outcomes when a ball in motion has been deliberately deflected or stopped by an outside agency. Rule 20-7c. Playing from Wrong Place; Stroke Play Note 3 is amended so that if a player is to be penalized for playing from a wrong place, in most cases the penalty will be limited to two strokes, even if another Rule has been breached prior to his making the stroke.
RULES Rule 1-2. Exerting Influence on Movement of Ball or Altering Physical Conditions The Rule is amended to establish more clearly that, if a player intentionally takes an action to influence the movement of a ball or to alter physical conditions affecting the playing of a hole in a way that is not permitted by the Rules, Rule 1-2 applies only when the action is not already covered in another Rule. For example, a player improving the lie of his ball is in breach of Rule 13-2 and therefore that Rule would apply, whereas a player intentionally improving the lie of a fellow-competitor’s ball is not a situation covered by Rule 13-2 and, therefore, is governed by Rule 1-2.
APPENDIX IV A new Appendix is added to prescribe general regulations for the design of devices and other equipment, such as tees, gloves and distance measuring devices.

2011 Michigan Publinx Player of the Year ... Martin Jeppesen Over the past few years, familiar names have held the Player of Year title. Bill Zylstra, Greg Davies, and Jason May seemed to have a monopoly on the award going back to 2005, especially Greg Davies winning three in that time frame. Last year things changed, a young, recent college grad from Eastern Michigan University put in an effort to upset the trend but faced stiff competition from Bill Zylstra. In the end, Martin Jeppesen pulled away in points capturing Michigan Publinx 2011 Player of the Year. Not only did Marty have a great season personally, he also was part of a very successful team at Green Oaks who went all the way to the West Side Team Play finals before falling to Lyon Oaks in a tightly contested match. In the spring of 2011, Marty had just finished his fine collegiate career and turned up his
• Qualified for US Open Sectionals • Exempt to Michigan Amateur, qualified for match play an won 1st match, losing to runner up • Finished 5th at Michigan Open with a final round 66 at the Orchards Golf Club • Qualified for US Amateur, made match play and lost in 1st round • Winner at the GAM Championship @ Barton Hills Country Club
in state play by repeating as champion of the Horton Smith held at Detroit Golf Club and adding his first GAM event victory by winning the Golf Association of Michigan Championship held at Barton Hills Country Club. These two victories were enough to keep Bill Zylstra at bay who had a fine season in his own right, winning the Michigan Publinx Medal Play Championship and finishing as runner up to Scott Jaschuk at the Michigan Publinx State Match Play. In order to hold off the hard charging Zylstra, Marty put together a strong season with an impressive body of work, his non-collegiate accomplishments were: • Winner at the Horton Smith Championship @ Detroit Golf Club • Top 10 at the Michigan Publinx Medal Play Championship @ Fellows Creek
2011 was Marty’s first MI Publinx Player of the Year award. He was also in the running for 2011 GAM Player of the Year award and was running away with it until a late
push by Randy Lewis who won the 2011 USGA Mid Amateur Championship. Marty has indicated he has aspirations to turn professional, we at the Michigan Publinx wish him well and hope that we see our second former MI Publinx member make it to PGA Tour. From the MI Publinx Board of Directors and all of the members of the MI Publinx, we want to say congratulations to Marty on winning the Player of the Year Title!
Good Luck Marty!

Focus On Your Ball Striking This Winter!
Your P.G.A. Professional Director of Instruction Director of Boyne Golf Academy Head Golf Professional at Boyne for 10 years
Pictured above is the practice station that I have set up for one of my students inside my Academy training facility here at Boyne Highlands. I simply cut a swim noodle in two small pieces to allow for her 7-iron to pass thru the “Gates” that I have secured to the hitting mat. She starts off with shorter slow motion swings first without a ball and then with a ball once she can swing pass the swim noodles without hitting them. This exercise will begin to narrow the golfers focus and present the center of the clubface to the golf ball more often. This works great with golfers of all abilities and will greatly improve your ball striking during the off-season. I have found that with indoor off-season training most golfers simply swing with very little focus on what their

Michigan Golf Course Owners Association 2011 Annual Awards Scott Lake Country Club is Course of the Year Scott Lake Country Club in Comstock Park has been selected Michigan Golf Course Owners Association’s Golf Course of the Year for 2011. With a long list of accomplishments, along with community contributions and exceptional management, owners Jeff and Paul Hoag’s golf course took the limelight this year. Once you play it, you will find yourself wanting to return again. Scott Lake Country Club is really “Scott Lake – where golf is fun!” Scott Lake Country Club has a long heritage of providing quality golf at affordable pricing with great hospitality for almost 50 years. The property was recognized at the Michigan Golf Business Conference and Vendor Fair, Wednesday, November 30 at the Somerset Inn in Troy.
Eagle Eye Golf Course Owner Honored Daryl Kesler, owner of Hawk Hollow Golf Properties in the Lansing area received the “Bruce Matthews Lifetime Achievement Award” in recognition of his outstanding service to the Michigan golf community. Kesler’s contributions to the golfing community include the construction of the PGA headquarters, golf courses including The Falcon, Hawk Hollow, Eagle Eye, and the new Woodside Golf Course plus the provision of the First Tee of Lansing infrastructure. This all confirmed his nomination as a lifelong champion of the industry. Mr. Kelser received the award at the Michigan Golf Business Conference, held at the Somerset Inn in Troy on November 30. He attended the event with his family and general manager Alex Coss. Kesler has been an active member of the Association and an advocate for golf business both locally and statewide. The Michigan Golf Course Owners Association is located in Lansing and serves as the “voice of Michigan golf business.”
Elmbrook Golf Course Owner Honored Carolyn Olson, owner of Elmbrook Golf Course in Traverse City, is the recipient of the Lyle Leeke Distinguished Service Award. Ms. Olson was recognized at the Michigan Golf Business Conference and Vendor Fair on Wednesday, Nov. 30. Fifteen years ago the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association decided to work to fulfill the needs of supporting the education and development of the golf course owner and operator. The Scott Family Educational Support Foundation was formed. Since its inception, Carolyn Olson, owner of Elmbrook Golf Course in Traverse City has been a trustee of the Foundation. Combined with her continued commitment to the MGCOA through participation on the Board of Directors, Olson has been selected to receive the Lyle Leeke Distinguish Service Award. The Michigan Golf Course Owners Association is located in Lansing and serves as the “voice of Michigan golf business.”
MSU Team Receives Award of Merit The Michigan State University’s “Turf Team” received the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association’s “Award of Merit.” This award recognizes the outstanding work of the “Turf Team” who wrote the book on golf course management, both figuratively and literally. Their collective contribution to the game of golf is vast, having defined virtually everything we do and how we do it. The “Turf Team” has covered every aspect of golf course management from basic agronomic practices and financial management to the most detailed best management practices to improve daily playability, making the game more fun for everyone. Michigan State University has trained more golf turf professionals and educators than any other institution. Following a “time line” presentation by Dr. Kevin Frank, the award was accepted on behalf of the team by Dr. James Kells, Chair of the Department of Crop and Soil Science. Attending with Drs. Kells and Frank was Dr. Trey Rogers and Dr. Paul Rieke.
