From the President… Dear Fellow Golfers, One of the great things that I have found with being involved with the Michigan Publinx Golf Association is not only the passion we have for our sport but the general caring for the health of our members. Over the past few years we have had a few of us develop some serious health issues. Most of us have survived and some have not. But the one bottom line that is the same there will be several members rally around our member. For those of you that know me it is a short step for me to get on my soap box. Having watched my mother-in-law go thru several months of agony being the result of many years of smoking it is very easy for me to make that step to my soap box. Recently Johnny O suffered a serious heart issue. He has asked me to publish the following letter and therefore I have a friend on the soap box with me to carry this message.

Dear fellow Publinx Players, My name is Johnny O. Many of you know me personally, some of you don’t know me at all. I started in the Publinx at Rogell in 1990’s . I played with Gary Cauzillo who has passed from cancer. I don’t know a lot of the guys in the Publinx but I would like to play 18 holes with you some time in the future. On April 27th I suffered a heart attack at the age of 41. I appeared healthy on the outside but cigarettes and a bad diet were hurting me on the inside. The reason for this letter is to simply make us all aware of the damage cigarettes and cheeseburgers can do. Whether or not I know you or will be paired with you in the future, I don’t want to lose any of you due to smoking. Please quit or cut back as much as possible. I can’t wait to be back on the fairways and see all the guys again. Stay healthy and keep it in the short grass. Sincerely, Johnny O

Registration Now Open for Genesee County Amateur Golf Championship!

Find out who the “best amateur golfers” are in Genesee County next month at Brookwood! Entries are now being accepted for the Genesee County Amateur Championship to be held at IMA Brookwood Golf Club June 23 & 24, 2012. The 36-hole stroke play tournament is a two-day event and is open to players of all ages. The tournament will be

flighted after the first day of play. Four divisions will be offered with an Open, Senior (50-62), Super Senior (63+) and Women’s division (any age). “Last year the Genesee County Amateur Championship was run as a Senior event. This year we have included an Open Division so that some of our younger players can participate also” said Ron Mitchell, golf manager at IMA Brookwood Golf Club. “There are so many good golfers of all ages here in Genesee County that it’s fun to have them competing at Brookwood and wanting to win the title of Best Golfer in Genesee County” added Mitchell. Entry fee for the Genesee County Amateur Championship is $65 for Brookwood season pass holders and $85 for non-season pass holders. Entry fee includes greens fees and carts for both days, range balls and awards. Advanced registration is required and entries will close on June 18, 2012.

IMA Brookwood Golf Club Becomes a Program Affiliate Location for The First Tee IMA Brookwood Golf Club has been accepted as a Program Affiliate of The First Tee Junior Golf Program and will now operate under The First Tee of Mid-Michigan Chapter. The popular golf course in Burton offered limited programming as an Access Affiliate of The First Tee Junior Golf Program in 2011 and has taken the next step in being able to offer and facilitate more of The First Tee programs in the future. “Becoming a Program Affiliate location will help build program capacity beyond The First Tee’s learning facilities and will help the program reach new segments of the community” said Diane Wojciechowski, Marketing Director of IMA Brookwood Golf Club and IMA Recreation Association. “This is a great program for junior golfers in the area to not only learn the game of golf but important life skills through The First Tee’s Nine Core Values that are incorporated into each junior golf lesson here at IMA Brookwood Golf Club. Offered to children ages 5 – 14, each student will receive six hours of instruction, participation in the celebration tournament and awards banquet, medals and/or trophies, a junior golf t-shirt and a sleeve of balls. The First Tee program will begin on Wednesday, June 20 and will run each Wednesday (except for 4th of July) through August 8, 2012 for the affordable price of $95 per student.

Wesley Gates Wins 2012 Horton Smith Championship May 10 – 12, 2012 remained steady shooting a great round of 68. Wesley grabbed the championship with a total score of 280 followed by Thompson at 282 and Bill O’Connor at 284. The Michigan Publinx Golf Association was again represented well with fifteen members of the 42 players making the final cut.

The 2012 Horton Smith invitational had quite a final round brewing. After three rounds Jason May and Wesley Gates were setting at the top of the leader board tied with a score of 212. Bill O’Connor and Dan Ellis were one shot back at 213 with Matthew Thompson at 215. In the final round it was Thompson making a charge firing a round of 67 but he came up a couple of shots short as Wesley

What’s New in the Michigan Publinx for 2012 The Board of Directors have made a few exciting changes for the 2012 golf season and we wanted to share them with you: Michigan Publinx Medal Play Championship • The 2012 Michigan Publinx Medal Play Championship (Lee Gohs Classic) has been moved from Fellow Creek Golf Course to Pheasant Run Golf Club in Canton • The format of 27 holes per day will remain the same, as well as the event will be held on the Memorial Day weekend of May 26-27, 2012 • Due to the length of distance between various green and tee complexes, the tournament will be carts only to enhance pace of play • The cart fees are now rolled

Championship Series One Day Events Entry Options Expanded • Players are now eligible to select the number of events they are able to play in. Anatomy of a Publinxer What do I want from this game? I am writing this article sitting in an airport, ready to go to Germany for work along with watching the 2012 Player’s Championship. I have been doing a lot of self reflection recently and wondering what the heck do I really want to get out of this game we love because right now I really do not enjoy it. I need to preface this viewpoint a little. This past Monday I attempted to qualify for the Michigan Amateur at Edgewood Country Club. I wanted to take the time to diagnose this round a little bit because of what I had learned, mainly how my emotions affected my play throughout this round, good and bad. Amateurs put a high level of pressure on themselves in every round they play, whether it is the weekend warrior, or the guy trying to qualify for scratch level state amateur or state open events. The weekend warrior may only play 1 day per week, so the pressure this person puts on him/herself is to score their best in their limited opportunities. However, there is at different level of pressure then the qualifier because they will be back on the golf course the following week trying to accomplish their goal of beating their best score the following week. The amateur that plays in qualifiers has a make or break mentality because they do not have an opportunity to make another qualification attempt until the following year. This is the case I will focus on, more importantly why we put too much pressure on these events. In all honesty, these qualifiers are no longer fun to play in unless the mindset is changed. I have been playing in state amateur qualifiers since I was 21 years old. This year was my 13th attempt to qualify for the Michigan Amateur, I have qualified 3 out of those 13 times, three years in

a row actually. I think I should be focusing on what I did during those three years and not writing an article about handling emotions! Ha ha! What has changed over those 13 years? I got married, I have three children, I have been promoted at couple of times, changed companies, and am working on a new work project that requires me to travel a week per month. Those are all excuses for THIS YEAR!! I believe I have become more efficient with my golf swing, I understand how to hit more shots, I can read the golf course better, and I spend 2 months of the year coaching a high school golf team. I should be better, you know why I am not, emotions, self-induced pressure, and not being wise enough to understand that life is really bigger than individual qualifiers. I received some unintended great advice one day from my friend and fellow publinxer, Dave Vaclav. Dave and I were talking about our kids and he said how great it is that he can play awful on the golf course, go home, and his kids do not care at all what he shot that day, only that he is home ready to play soccer, have a game of catch, or whatever interests them at the moment. Wow is Dave ever right! I missed qualifying by 2 shots and the first thing that happened when I got home is that all my kids ran up to hug me and my oldest (5 year old) asked me to go outside and pitch baseballs to him for batting practice. They knew I was playing golf, and they know I love playing it. That morning they gave me a cursory “good luck” in the morning, not knowing really what for, but their world and focus is completely different. Not all of us have kids so I do not want to send the message to having kids takes the stink off a bad round of golf.

We all have things in our lives that we perceive more important (insert soothing mechanism here). How can we change or simplify our mindset, almost to the level of a child? I am not sure how to simplify this thought process but walking through my emotional round of golf may trigger some ideas. This may be familiar to you, it may not, and you just might think I am crazy but here it goes anyway. Stepping up on the first tee I had confidence, hit a conservative tee shot, drew a bad lie, left the ball in a good spot short of the green, good chip, missed a 5-foot par putt. Oh well, piped a nice tee ball into the heart of the fairway, conservative 7 iron to middle of green 25 feet away, putted it up to 2 feet, mark and wait my turn, hop up there, and missed it! Uh oh! Now for some reason my brain flipped into panic mode? Why? My initial that was that I knew from playing Edgewood before in qualifiers it will take 2-3 over par to qualify, I am still within the number. My thoughts should be that simple, you are in good shape, don’t panic, but no it can’t be that simple to keep that train of thought. I stand on the third tee box and all I am thinking about is that I need to now get those two shots back. The third hole at Edgewood is a 476 yard dog leg left with out of bounds all the way down the left side. My typical miss on the golf course is a conservative block (right of the target for right a hander), typically! Standing on this tee box thinking I have to sweep one around the corner to try to get there in 2 shots to set up an easy birdie. Why! Why is my thought process on the tee not just target and all I care about is a conservative target? I will tell you, self inflicted pressure! Why, no one in my family cares if I make the Amateur, my lega-

cy will not be predicated on tournament success. My legacy is how my children turnout, how much fun my wife and I will have in our lives, growing relationships with my friends, the difference I can make at work whether through leadership or new ideas that will help the company reduce costs. Why am I putting this pressure on myself? Because I have 1 chance to make it this year, my thought that I HAVE to qualify! That is me, my boss (home & work) did not tell me I had to make it. On my tee shot I make a completely nerved swing and snipe hook one that luckily hits a tree and stays in bounds. I trudge it down the fairway forced myself to think that I needed to hole out a wedge for birdie, so I hit it over the green and make double bogey. OK, I think to myself get a hold of myself. I start asking for rain. My mind changed from score to weather, that was my focus. I proceed to make a couple of pars and a bogey in the next three holes. I am now at 5 over through 6 holes. This score is not a killer this early, it is not easy to rebound, but not impossible. I know I can make birdies, I have not made a bunch this year but I think I got it in me. C’mon, I want to tell myself, make it that simple, charge. No that is not my thought process I am thinking I need to make it up in one swing! I proceed to make triple on 7, I leave a second shot in a green side bunker worried that I might hit a long bunker shot out of bounds over the green, why! No I did not think about the shot I was concerned with a negative result. C’mon get it together! Now I know I am dead, 8 over after 7 holes. I play defeated over the next couple of holes. It was raining hard so I just

thought of survival simply advancing the ball in play. I proceed to put the ball in play, onto the green, 2-putt par. I make three pars in a row simplifying this thought process. I did not realize I was actually doing this, wow I am just playing the game, nothing more. After this string of pars we get yanked off the course for 2 hours due to rain pooling up on the greens. Just what I need, extend this day! Instead of crying the blues I took the time to catch up with friends at the qualifier, laugh and get ready to go back out, I will not quit! I knew what I had to do, play the remaining 7 holes 4 under par to have a chance, really? Why not let’s take that mindset, can’t hurt. I went out in this stretch of 7 holes and made 4 birdies, part of that was making birdies on the final 3 holes. Interesting! What happened in this stretch? No fear, nothing to lose, just play, and have fun. Why the hell did I put all that pressure on myself in the beginning, if I had started from this simple mindset I may have been more successful. I hated playing golf for the majority of that day. Why did I not realize it was the greatest day ever (outside of my wedding day or birth of my kids). My cell phone is turned off, no kids or wife bothering me, vacation from work, and great company playing with friends, Jim Dales and Jim Rowe. What is wrong with me? What kind of message am I sending not only my kids, but the high school kids I coach? I think I can surmise that a good, positive, simple mindset is what I need to do not only for qualifiers but for the rest of the season. Alright I am drawing a line in the sand for the rest of the year starting with the next time I play golf when I get back in town I will take the mindset of enjoying playing golf! I will place these goals in three categories, #1 enjoy hitting good shots! Not many people can hit many good

shots in a round, I am not special, so I should enjoy it, no self induced pressure. The second category, enjoy or accept hitting a bad shot, because there is now a challenge of getting this missed shot up and down. The great Ben Hogan used to say he only hit 5 shots per round like he really wanted! Five of a ballpark 67 shots, 7% of his shots! Who am I to think will be 100% successful? Reality check! The third is to enjoy being around people with like interests in golf. Don’t pout, don’t come in after a round and because you shot 78, and say you played terrible. Someone in your party could be real excited about shooting 79 and here you are making a big deal that 78 is terrible. How do you think that guy feels? A great friend of mine and another fellow publinxer, John Leach, said we are not that good to care that much. Truer words could not be spoken, we are not getting paid to play, we don’t have $5000 swing/short game instructors on call, we need to accept who we are an enjoy it. Take this as advice, do not raise your heart rates, is it really that important? I track my rounds of golf and they are totaling between 35 – 45 rounds per year, I am luck to play that much. This number will dwindle over the next few years so it should be a priority to enjoy those every year and not put too much pressure on them because they quickly turn out to be miserable with my old mindset. Let’s see! I will take make myself a test case or guinea pig. I will take on the task of this new simplified motto going into each round for the balance of the season, and in a later edition of this article I will report back to you all and it either succeed or not improve and I will be very honest and let you know the results in either direction. ••••

GAM Team Retains Fuller Cup! Hosted By Flint Golf Club May 9, 2012 The 40th playing of the Fuller Cup took place at Flint Golf Club, Flint Michigan. Twenty four of Michigan’s top player’s, twelve PGA Professionals and twelve GAM Amateurs went nose to nose to claim this years bragging rights. The Michigan PGA (Professional Golf Association of Michigan) team was Tom Harding, Kevin Muir, Randy Erskine, Ron Beurmann, TJ Roberts, Pat Markley, John Seltzer, Jack Seltzer, Charles Pasco, Bob

Ackerman, Brian Dice and Brian Cairnes. The GAM (Golf Association of Michigan) team was Casey Baker, Bill Zylstra, Greg Reynolds, Tom Werkmeister, Mike Ignasack, Dan Ellis, Jared Dalga, Steve McKalco, Jerred Barley Scott Jaschuk, Nick Dennis and Michael Coriasso. In the morning team matches the GAM team finished with a slim one-point advantage (3.5 to 2.5). The teams of Werkmeister/Ignasack, Ellis/Dalga,

Dennis/Coriasso each grabbed a victory while Baker/Reynolds chipped in with a tie. In the afternoon single matches the GAM team was looking to repeat their 2011 victory by winning the first four out of five matches but the PGA Team had different ideas. The PGA team captured four out of the last five matches to capture 6.5 points and pull to a tie. Because the GAM team held the cup from 2011 they retained the cup for another season.

Werkmeister Wins His Sixth West Michigan Amateur! Candlestone Golf Resort-Belding MI â&#x20AC;˘ June 19 & 20, 2012 Willie Mack III claimed the West Michigan Amateur in 2011 but turned pro and was not eligible to defend his title in 2012. Tom Werkmeister who led this tournament by three shots with three holes to go in 2011 jumped out to the early lead this year by shooting 67 in the opening round and followed up in the second round with a 71 to hold the 36-hole lead. Trailing Werkmeister by four shots was Mike Basinski, Bob

Sakocius and Mark Schoenborn with scores of 142. In the final round Tom remained steady shooting a 76 to take a three shot victory and capture his sixth WMA title. Tomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first WMA was in 2001 making him the dominant player for the last eleven years. Tom is also closing in on Bob Sakocius for holding the most WMA crowns. Bob currently owns nine WMA championships.

2012 Michigan Publinx State Match Play surfaces. This links influenced layout traverses mildly undulating terrain with numerous wetlands and water hazards along the way. Those who have not visited in the past couple of years will be surprised at the growth that has taken place in this upscale residential community, as beautiful homes line many fairways and form a significant backdrop behind many of the green complexes in this 1,000 acre countryside development. Golf properties do not usually warrant a 4-star rating without providing a nice package of amenities, and the list at Twin Lakes is an impressive one. First of all, two huge practice greens rest between the clubhouse and first tee, with a massive grass range nearby. The short game area includes a chipping area and sand bunker, perfect for a warm up or for a morning or afternoon of practice. The clubhouse features an upscale pro shop, plus lockers and showers for men and women. The restaurant and lounge is wonderfully appointed, and the landscaped outdoor patio is a great place for parties and receptions, and presents views of a natural area that rests immediately behind the clubhouse. The service here is outstanding - worthy of private club experiences. Crain’s Detroit has awarded Twin Lakes with the honor of recognition as the # 1 Women Friendly Course in SE Michigan. There are twenty seven holes on property - the new Woods nine opened for public play in 2006, and provides golfers with a Northern Michigan experience featuring elevation changes, rolling fairways bound by mature trees, and spectacular marshlands populated with herons and indigenous wildlife. This layout plays to distance measuring 3414, 3172, 3029, 2831 and 2322 yards, and is located in a serene environment, with no residential properties situated alongside. There are quite a few forced carries over marsh, though like the original eighteen, the carries are reasonable from the white and forward tees. We highly recommend that you include the Woods in any Twin Lakes golf experience. The Estates nine also has 5 sets of tees that play to 3502, 3301, 3160, 2856 and 2507 yards, while the Links nine measures 3243, 3015, 2849, 2548 and 2113 yards. The slope ratings of the 27 holes vary between 109 and 133.

South East Michigan will be the home for the 2012 State Match Play Championship. It’s been many many years since this title has been claimed in the Motor City Area. For the past several years this championship has been held in a Northern Michigan atmosphere or the warm rural countryside of West Michigan. Breaking from the norm, in 2012 Blackheath Golf Course and Twin Lakes Golf and Swim Club both in Rochester Hills Michigan will host the SMP Championship. These are two fine venues that will offer a great challenge for all players. The following information is a brief overview for each course and what lies ahead for the players in this year’s tournament.

Blackheath Golf Course Blackheath opened in 1998 and was designed and constructed by Kevin Aldrich. Mr. Aldrich’s inspiration to develop this style of layout was brought on by a visit to Scotland. On this trip, he learned of the two unique types of layouts that could be offered by this type of topography and he was able to produce a gem in Rochester, MI. There are two types of courses in the birthplace of golf, which are heathland and links styles. A heathland course is built from farmland and lies inland from the sea. Links courses on the other hand sit next to the sea. As opposed to a links design with the bumpy fairways and deep bunkers, a heathland course offers gently rolling fairways and flat bunkering. The name “blackheath” itself comes from the honorable society of men, which is said to be the first to establish a club in England that was actually outside of Scotland. The course sits on 128 acres. It features a good test of golf for both men and ladies of all skill levels. Playing to par of 71 the course offers four sets of tees, challenging bunkering, and undulating greens that make for a true but fair round of golf. Blackheath has already earned quite a reputation. Blackheath was selected to host the United States Amateur Sectional qualifier in 1998. Crain’s Detroit Business rated Blackheath as a top 5 must play in Michigan. Blackheath was also awarded 3 1»2 stars by Golf Digest.

String a few 1-Putts This is one of my favorite practice stations for putting! I found some red string, and two skewers from the camping section. Cut the string about 9’ long and tie it to the loops on skewers. Stick them in the ground in line with the hole and start putting. If your putter has a line on it your goal is to make that line disappear from sight which gets the putter face to aim squarely to the line. This gets the golfer that has trouble aiming the face and getting the ball to start on line improv-

ing in minutes. An added touch is to create a gate just wide enough for the ball to pass using two golf tees. Practice from 3’, 6’, and 8’. More putts will start falling!

During the next 30 days there will be 14 qualifiers throughout the state with the last one taking place in the UP at Greywalls Golf Club in Marquette. The destination this year for these players will be Oakland Hills Country Club (North Course) in Bloomfield Hills.

Michigan Publinx Tournament Series Championship Twin Lakes Golf Club • May 6, 2012 Sunday May 6th was the first tournament series event in 2012 for the Michigan Publinx Golf Association. A cool breeze but dry conditions welcomed over 100 players to their first competitive event for the season. It was evident the great spring weather
