Pheasant Run Golf Club is a world class, community golf facility that opened its doors in 1995. The now mature and pristine 27-hole layout was designed by Arthur Hills and will put your skills to the test. The course encompasses over 300 acres of Pencross turf, natural wetlands, woodland areas and native grasses. Hills created large landing areas off the tee but tightened things up after the drive with water hazards and marshes. Pheasant Run has 4 sets of tee boxes and can be played from 5,046 yards to 7,125 from the tips. Play all the way back and you'll find a course rating of 74.9 and slope of 148, ranking it among the most difficult in the state. With length being a factor, Hills designed large, receptive greens that are well guarded by stray shots. Green speed and condition are amongst the best around with speeds in the mid 9's. The Pro-Shop The Pro Shop features a wide selection of top shelf merchandise from pro line manufacturers. Ashworth, Callaway, Adidas, Titleist, Footjoy and Ahead apparel and merchandise. Their courteous and friendly staff is on hand to assist you with all of your golfing needs.

Dear Fellow Players, Wow, what a great season we have so far this summer! We just finished our 3rd Championship Series event at Dunham Hills today. Just when you think things have gone a little snarlier than you would like to see, we get a real treat. Two fawns in full spots come across 13 fairway (probably all of 35 lbs each) and put on a show for about 4 minutes. One decided to walk over to my playing partner to see what he was up to. Can't talk about that but it was pretty funny. It makes me stop and think how lucky we are to play this game and be treated to such wonderful surprises by Mother Nature. The other highlight of the day was a hole in one by Mark Cykowski! On another note it was great to see Johnny 'O' recover so well from his health issues and be able to come out and play in the Medal Play Lee Gohs Classic Trophy Tournament. Congratulations and welcome back Johnny 'O'. Speaking of the Medal Play Tournament, Greg Davies had a little fun on Saturday after the rain storm going something like 9 under during the last 15 holes. We had arguably the strongest field this year at the new venue of Pheasant Run that we have had in years. Not only that, rounds were played in 5 _ to 6 _ hours. Oh you say, don't forget that was 27 holes each day. Pretty darn good pace of play. Congratulations to all of the players as you are becoming very conscious of your pace of play. Up next is the State Match Play, which for the first time in my memory will be played downstate, in the Rochester Hills area at

Drew Preston Wins

101st Michigan Amateur Championship! Oakland Hills Country Club • Bloomfield Hills, Michigan • June 18th ~22nd 2011

Hayward, Slade, Bastion and Werkmeister were the top four seeds and moved into match play action with sixty other players where anything can happen.

Wednesday, June 20th First & Second Round Match Play First round action found Hayward narrowly advancing with a 1 up victory over Casey Olsen, Werkmeister strolled to a 7 & 5 win over Dennis Kane, Bastion squeaked out a win 1 up and Slade was defeated 2 & 1 by Joshua Bauer Monday, June 18th First Round Qualifying Oakland Hills Country Club was absolutely beautiful for the 101st Michigan Amateur. The weather in the morning was perfect and the early players enjoyed great conditions but storms moved in and through the area delaying play and making different conditions for the afternoon players.

Other notable players, Greg Davies advanced over Zach Preuss, Randy Lewis the 2011 U.S. Mid Amateur Champion lost to Alex Jones in 19 holes and Bill Zylstra had to put in a little extra work to defeat Steve Mckalco in 24 holes. Second round matches started immediately after the first round and required focus and stamina to deal with the high heat conditions

Brian Hayward from Grand Rapids Michigan was the low amateur at the Michigan Open last week and he carded the low round of the day with a 66, four under par. Spencer Slade from Miles of Golf was alone in 2nd place at three under par followed by one of the top seniors in the country at two under par Bill Zylstra. Four players, Dan Ellis, Jeff Champine, Steve McKalco and Brett Quitiquit were all tied at one under par. Only seven players broke par in the first round. Tuesday, June 19th Second Round Qualifying In the final qualifying round it was Brian Hayward walking away with the “Medalist” honors shooting a 71 and a total score of 137. Spencer Slade and Brad Bastion were two shots back at 139 followed by a group of players at 140 that included Bill Zylstra and Tom Werkmeister.

(mid 90's) and the pressure of match play action. Brian Hayward and Tom Werkmeister handled the conditions and made it into the third round with 2 & 1 and 2 up wins respectively. Michael Castleforte defeated Brad Bastion the other top seed 1 up. In another match featuring past champions Greg Davies (2006) and Joey Garber (2010),

Continued on Page 4

Continued from Page 3 Joey defeated Greg 3 & 2. Bill Zylstra would also have his tournament come to an end with a 2 & 1 loss to Brian Burt.

Thursday, June 21st Third & Fourth Round Match Play When the day ended Hayward continued to win beating Hudson 2 & 1 and Eccleton 3 & 1. Joining Hayward in the semi finals was two more west Michigan natives in Tom Werkmeister and Drew Preston (Ada) who compete against each other regularly in West Michigan Amateur Golf Association events. Werkmeister was the 2009 Michigan Amateur Champion and he had to work extra hard to make the semi's going 19 holes with Gieselman and 22 holes with Garbor before he secured the victories. Werkmeister squared off with Hayward for a chance to advance to the finals. Wesley Gates is the other semi finalist and he faced Preston for his chance to go to the finals. Gates & Preston are teammates at Bowling Green University.

Friday, June 22nd Semi Final & Final Matches Werkmeister continued to put in extra work going extra holes in the semi-final match before he defeated Hayward and earning a spot in the finals. Preston topped Gates 4 & 3 in his match to earn a spot against Werkmeister in the finals.

In the final match Werkmeister got off to a good start going up 2 holes early in the match but Preston hung in there and eventually would square match. As they went down the stretch Preston would go 1 up and then eventually defeat Werkmeister 2 up to claim the trophy.

Congratulations Drew!

Barrett Kelpin Claims 2012 Michigan Open! Ties 64-Year Old Scoring Record! The Orchards Golf Club

• June 11-14, 2012 Presented by Lincoln and DTE Energy

Over one hundred and fifty players teed it up at the 95th Michigan Open for a piece of the prize purse with an $8,000 share for the winner. The Orchards is a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design with many national awards under its belt. The golf course is located on a 525-acre residential community. The course rating is 74.5 with a slope of 136 from the championship tees. Randy Hutchinson from Traverse City and a former MSU graduate is the defending champion and Randy took right off with another great round at the Orchards. With an early tee time, Randy fired a round of 66 to hold the first round lead followed by Randy Erskine, Brian Ottenweller and Chester Vandenberg with rounds of 67. Randy Erskine needs no introduction as he is one of the top pros here in the state of Michigan and has five Michigan Open titles to his name. Ottenweller from Grand Rapids pushed Hutchinson last year for the title but a nice surprise was Vandenberg a 23-year-old amateur from Martin, Mich. Willie Mack III and Steve Brady along with four other players were two shots back, setting up some stiff competition going into the second round. All in all it was a good day for scoring with 37 players breaking par. The second day scoring found new horses in the field. Barret Kelpin from Kalamazoo tied the course record with a round of 63 to take a one shot lead over another familiar name, Jeff Cuzzort, who shot 64. This was Kelpin’s first event as a pro. Randy Hutchinson shot an even round of par and several players passed him on the leader board. Third round action was much like the second round. Brett Kelpin continued to roll firing a round of 66 to increase his

lead over Cuzzort by four shots and a total score of 19 under par. Brian Hayward, an amateur from Grand Rapids, jumped in the mix by shooting a round of 64 to set in third place by himself. Randy Hutchinson’s dream of defending his title vanished after shooting a round of 73 and leaving himself 14 shots back of the leader with one round to play. Final round action was all Barrett Kelpin as Cuzzort or the rest of field could apply no pressure to Barrett. Barrett just fired away shooting a final round score of four under par giving him a total score of 23 under par and a total of 265 for the tournament. Barrett’s final score tied a 64-year-old record set by Chick Harbert in 1948. Chick is Michigan Golf Hall of Fame legend, who won the Michigan Open four times, won seven times on the PGA Tour, won the 1954 PGA National Championship and was a Ryder Cup captain.

2012 U. S. Amateur Public Links Qualifiers Cedar Chase Golf Club & Dunham Hills Golf Club Mid June brings thoughts of The Masters and as a amateur, one way to get there is to capture a U. S. Public Links Title. Soldier Hollow Golf Club in Midway, Utah will host the 2012 championship. This year Cedar Chase and Dunham Hills hosted the Michigan qualifiers with the first on June 11th at Dunham Hills and June 14th at Cedar Chase. These qualifiers are long days for the contestants as they are 36-hole qualifiers with only a couple of spots available. This year the weather was perfect at Dunham Hills and at Cedar Chase. Greg Davies Wins 2012 Michigan Publinx Medal Play Tournament Pheasant Run Golf Club – Canton MI May 26th & 27th 2012

Every Memorial Day weekend this tournament has attracted top players from all over the state to win the Lee Gohs Trophy. In an effort to improve attendance, play and competition the Michigan Publinx Golf Association moved to Pheasant Run Golf Club (Canton MI) this year and it was a home run decision! The field had over 90 payers, the golf course was a better championship venue and Greg Bores (PGA Pro) and his staff at Pheasant Run did just a fabulous job. The weather seems like it is always a factor and this year was no different with thunderstorms and two rain delays on Saturday and then just a beautiful day on Sunday. In the Championship Division Greg Davies just blitzed the field on Saturday! Greg started the day just steady like he normally does knocking down pars through the first seven or eight holes. Then after a couple of

thunderstorm delays Greg came out with fifteen holes left to play in the first round. That’s when the real lightning hit as he birdied nine of his last fifteen holes to shoot a great round of six under par for the first twenty-seven holes. Greg built a four shot cushion over Joshua Bauer who shot 106 (two under par) and a five shot lead over Michael King and Anthony Sorentino. In the net division Jack Brown from Flint Michigan also started the tournament off in great form shooting a net score of 103 (five under Par). Jack would have a two shot lead going into the final round over Bruce Fuller and Tom Mulhern who fired net scores of 105 (three under par). In the final championship round of twentyseven holes Greg Davies wasn’t quite the same birdie machine that he displayed Saturday but he was rock solid firing a round of 106 (two under par), Joshua Bauer did his best catch Greg shooting a round of 108 but there was just to much distance to over come. Josh would take second place followed by Dave Vaclav in third place by himself.

This was Greg’s second Michigan Publinx Medal Play/Lee Gohs championship. Greg is quietly building one of the best amateur resumes in Michigan with eleven major titles. One-Michigan Amateur, Three-Publinx State Match Play’s, Two-Michigan Medal/Lee Gohs, One-Michigan Medal/Horton Smith, TwoSyron Memorials and Two-Michigan Mid Amateurs. In the final round of the “net” division it was a real dogfight between Jack Brown, Tom Mulhern and Bruce Fuller with each player having his chance to capture the title in regulation. The three players finished in a three-way tie (one over par) for first place forcing a sudden death playoff. The playoff lasted four holes with Jack Brown coming out on top for first place followed by Tom Mulhern and Bruce Fuller. On behalf of the players we would like to thank the Publinx Tournament Committee, the staff at Fellows Creek Golf Club and the Officials who did a fantastic job! Congratulations Greg and Jack!

2012 Michigan Publinx State Match Play surfaces. This links influenced layout traverses mildly undulating terrain with numerous wetlands and water hazards along the way. Those who have not visited in the past couple of years will be surprised at the growth that has taken place in this upscale residential community, as beautiful homes line many fairways and form a significant backdrop behind many of the green complexes in this 1,000 acre countryside development. Golf properties do not usually warrant a 4-star rating without providing a nice package of amenities, and the list at Twin Lakes is an impressive one. First of all, two huge practice greens rest between the clubhouse and first tee, with a massive grass range nearby. The short game area includes a chipping area and sand bunker, perfect for a warm up or for a morning or afternoon of practice. The clubhouse features an upscale pro shop, plus lockers and showers for men and women. The restaurant and lounge is wonderfully appointed, and the landscaped outdoor patio is a great place for parties and receptions, and presents views of a natural area that rests immediately behind the clubhouse. The service here is outstanding - worthy of private club experiences. Crain’s Detroit has awarded Twin Lakes with the honor of recognition as the # 1 Women Friendly Course in SE Michigan. There are twenty seven holes on property - the new Woods nine opened for public play in 2006, and provides golfers with a Northern Michigan experience featuring elevation changes, rolling fairways bound by mature trees, and spectacular marshlands populated with herons and indigenous wildlife. This layout plays to distance measuring 3414, 3172, 3029, 2831 and 2322 yards, and is located in a serene environment, with no residential properties situated alongside. There are quite a few forced carries over marsh, though like the original eighteen, the carries are reasonable from the white and forward tees. We highly recommend that you include the Woods in any Twin Lakes golf experience. The Estates nine also has 5 sets of tees that play to 3502, 3301, 3160, 2856 and 2507 yards, while the Links nine measures 3243, 3015, 2849, 2548 and 2113 yards. The slope ratings of the 27 holes vary between 109 and 133.

South East Michigan will be the home for the 2012 State Match Play Championship. It’s been many many years since this title has been claimed in the Motor City Area. For the past several years this championship has been held in a Northern Michigan atmosphere or the warm rural countryside of West Michigan. Breaking from the norm, in 2012 Blackheath Golf Course and Twin Lakes Golf and Swim Club both in Rochester Hills Michigan will host the SMP Championship. These are two fine venues that will offer a great challenge for all players. The following information is a brief overview for each course and what lies ahead for the players in this year’s tournament.

Blackheath Golf Course Blackheath opened in 1998 and was designed and constructed by Kevin Aldrich. Mr. Aldrich’s inspiration to develop this style of layout was brought on by a visit to Scotland. On this trip, he learned of the two unique types of layouts that could be offered by this type of topography and he was able to produce a gem in Rochester, MI. There are two types of courses in the birthplace of golf, which are heathland and links styles. A heathland course is built from farmland and lies inland from the sea. Links courses on the other hand sit next to the sea. As opposed to a links design with the bumpy fairways and deep bunkers, a heathland course offers gently rolling fairways and flat bunkering. The name “blackheath” itself comes from the honorable society of men, which is said to be the first to establish a club in England that was actually outside of Scotland. The course sits on 128 acres. It features a good test of golf for both men and ladies of all skill levels. Playing to par of 71 the course offers four sets of tees, challenging bunkering, and undulating greens that make for a true but fair round of golf. Blackheath has already earned quite a reputation. Blackheath was selected to host the United States Amateur Sectional qualifier in 1998. Crain’s Detroit Business rated Blackheath as a top 5 must play in Michigan. Blackheath was also awarded 3 1»2 stars by Golf Digest.

Putt with your wedge for better stability and control:

Your P.G.A. Professional Director of Instruction Director of Boyne Golf Academy Head Golf Professional at Boyne for 10 years Former Michigan P.G.A. State Pro-Am Champion Former P.G.A Teacher of the Year for the Northern Chapter of the Michigan P.G.A. Custom Club Fitting Specialist Graduate of Professional Golf Management – Ferris State University Contributing Editor and P.G.A. Teaching panelist for golf publications

During one of my recent rounds of leisurely golf this spring I was playing with my friend and fellow golf professional Jerry Roman, Head Golf Professional at Hidden River Golf Club, and we were hitting a few extra putts on the final green and Jerry started to make putts with his sand wedge one after another from about 10 feet. He mentioned to me that he likes to practice this inside of the 10 foot range to get better feel and control of the clubface as well as it forces him to focus more on his ball contact. Since that time I have had many of my students practice this during our lesson times and they have had great success. The basis behind this practice drill is to softly putt the ball with the leading edge or blade of the wedge and control the

distance by maintaining the angles set with your wrists. It’s fun to have small challenge contests with your friends while getting some great practice time in. Once you put your putter back in your hands you feel an incredible amount of confidence with both contact and control.

Ray Emsley Defeats Mike Fedewa In 4th GAM Senior Match Play Championship Gross Ile Golf & Country-Club • May 29th through June 1st This GAM Senior Match Play tournament field just keeps getting stronger and popular among Michigan Seniors. Over 75 seniors and 30 super seniors were in the field on the 29th to qualify for match play starting on the 30th. The defending champion Greg Reynolds set the tone in the “Senior” division, shooting a round of 72 to share medalist honors with Dan Longeway and Craig Vanassen. In the Super Senior division, Neil McQuarrie and John Thrasher shared the honors with rounds of 76. Senior match play action found Greg Reynolds advancing through the first two rounds with commanding victories. Greg won his first match 4 & 2 and his second match 5 & 4. Vanassen kept pace with Reynolds by winning his first two matches

but Longeway would be defeated in his first match by Jerry Blake 2 & 1. Super Senior action found defending champion Claude Johnson advancing to the next round with a 3 & 1 victory. The two medalist McQuarrie and Thrasher both advanced to the next round as well. In the quarter final match Mike Fedewa ended Greg Reynolds bid to defend his title. Ray Emsley, a longstanding Publinx member, won his third match to advance into the semifinal match against Mark Christenson, while Dave Sweeney another Publinx member won his third match to take on Mike Fedewa. In the super seniors, John F. O’Donovan ended Claude Johnson’s repeat bid and will face John Lindholm in the semi-final match. Tim Redmond and John French advanced to

21

join O’Donovan and Lindholm. Ray Emsley and Mike Fedewa made their way through the semi final match to face each other for the championship, as did Lindholm and Redmond in the super senior division. In the final match, rain was probably the toughest opponent for all the players but Ray Emsley was focused and led the entire match, capturing the Senior Division Title with a 4 & 3 victory over Mike Fedewa. In the super senior division, John Lindholm got off to a fast start and a sizeable lead before Tim Redmond started making his move. Tim was able to get back to one down after 16 holes but John won the 17th hole to win the super seniors title 2 & 1. Congratulations Ray and John!
