Club Car Senior Open Bedford Valley Golf Club • Bedford – MI • July 17 - 18, 2013

Hot weather greeted these “seniors” for the first round and so was the scoring. Thirteen players would better par with Barry Redmond (Boyne USA) and Kevin Muir (The Wyndgate) leading the pack at 4 under par 68. Ron Beurmann is the defending champion. Ron worked his way around the course to shoot 70, two shots back of the leader’s and within range to defend his title.

In the Super Seniors Division, Joseph Miller from Battle Creek recorded a 2 under par round 70 for a two shot lead over Claude Johnson. Second and final round action continued under very warm conditions and so did the scoring. The leaders slipped a bit and Beurmann continued his fine play and was able to slide by Kevin Muir to capture a one shot victory. Ron is the first player to defend his title in the history of this great event.

In the Super Senior Division, professional Larry Clark from Traverse City shot 1 under par for a 144 two day total, which was good for a one shot victory. Coming in second were amateurs Joseph Miller from Battle Creek and John French from Bloomfield Hills. The low amateur this year was Mitch Wilson from Portage, shooting 143.

U. S. Senior Open Qualifier Flint Golf Club • June 24, 2013

Over 80 players were in the field to try and capture a chance to play in this year’s U.S. Senior Open hosted by Omaha Country Club in Omaha Nebraska. The competition here was tough, with four players tied for “Medalist” shooting rounds of 70, five more players shooting 71 and six players shooting 72. There were only two spots open in this qualifier so the four “medalist” had a playoff to determine who qualified and who received alternate spots. July 11 marks the first day of the Senior Open so the qualifiers here today will be making quick plans for a trip to Omaha.

Eric Dovre Captures 2013 Syron Memorial Tournament Pontiac Country Club • Pontiac, Michigan • July 4 – 6, 2013 Frank Syron came to Michigan in 1918 and accepted a job as a caddie master at Bloomfield Hills Country Club. He moved to Orchard Lake Country Club as head Pro in 1926. While there, among the people he taught was the former Olympic standout and future threetime U.S. Women’s Open Champion, Babe Didrikson Zaharias. He made a big career move in 1941 when he and his wife purchased a run down little course called Pontiac Country Club. Six decades later the Syron Family hosts this tournament not as a revenue booster, but rather as a testimonial to the man that started it all with the love of the game of golf. This year was much like every year with all the top players in the field, warm weather conditions and a competitive finish!

The annual Frank Syron Memorial Tournament is at Pontiac Country Club every Forth of July weekend. The finest Amateur golfers in the state compete in the three-day, 54-hole event. It is a tribute to Frank Syron, who passed away in 1969 at the age of 69. He was a tireless promoter of the game, back in the days when golf wasn’t as popular as it is now. He would put on free exhibitions with the top players of the day such as Byron Nelson, Jimmy Demaret, Ed Furgol and Walter Burkeno to encourage people to experience the game.

At the end of the first 18 holes Eric Dovre fired a round of 69 followed by Scott Jaschuk, Andy Alvey, Sean Friel and Nick Robeson with rounds of 70. When the second finished, Eric had a slim lead standing at 142 followed by Matthew Sheperd at 143. Tom Daigle Jr., Scott Jaschuk and Anthony Sorentino were two shots back at 144. In the final round Eric just took control of the tournament by firing a round of 67 to capture the trophy by five shots over Jaschuk and Daigle.

Greg Davies Wins His 4th Michigan Publinx State Match Play Championship! Hosted By Eagle Glen Golf Club & The Pines Golf Club July 26-30, 2013 Three years ago this great tournament moved south for a little change in venue and returned this year to their northern home where the players from all over the state were greeted with open arms by Dean Paesens (Eagle Glen Golf Club) and Joe Schumer (The Pines Golf Club) along with their staff. Both golf courses were in fabulous shape and gave these players a good challenge to be this years match play champions. The weather was not quite as friendly though, as cool damp conditions moved in for most of the tournament but that didn’t hurt the scores as there were some excellent rounds of golf played making for some great qualifying scores to set up the match play competition! Qualifying Rounds Championship Division: Josh Mitroka got the first round under way with an excellent round of 69 at The Pines Golf Club followed by Tony Mango at 70 and James Uelmen with 71. In the second round at Eagle Glen Golf Club it was Bill Zylstra taking low honors with a 67 followed by Greg Davies (70), Andy Alvey (71) and Mike Horn with 71. With the qualifying rounds in the books it was Josh Mitroka and Bill Zylstra leading the way with a tie at 141 followed by Tony Mango at 142 and Greg Davies at 145. Josh Mitroka would claim the “The Medalist Honors” for qualifying as he had the low score at The Pines Golf Club, which had a higher degree of difficulty between the two venues. Senior Championship Division: Bob Dexter would claim low honors the first day at Eagle Glen with a solid round of 70 fol-

lowed by Mike Grace (71), Robert Klingbeil and Mike LaPoe at 73. Second round action at The Pines found Robert Klingbeil leading the charge with 71, Mike LaPoe and Leo Martin shooting 74 and Bob Dexter at 75. Robert Klingbeil would claim the “Medalist Honors” with a total qualifying score of 144 and rounding out the top four seeds would be Bob Dexter with 145, Mike LaPoe (147) and Art Szarejko at 150. Senior Championship Division: The super seniors (65 an older) were not going be over looked during the qualifying rounds as there was some excellent scores to show how good these gentlemen can play. With the use of forward tees and friendly yardages these guys proceeded to shoot lights out and Larry Hogard got off to a bang at Eagle Glen shooting 66! Jim Novar would follow at 70, Claude Johnson (72) and Cliff Davis at 73. Second round action found more of the same with Dick Blank turning in the low round at The Pines with 76, Hogard (78), Claude Johnson (78) and Jim Novar at 78. Larry Hogard claimed the “Medalist” trophy with a total score of 144, Jim Novar at 148, Claude Johnson 150, Dick Blank (155) and Tim Burns at 155. Match Play Competition The old saying holds true when it comes to match play competition, “Anything Can Happen,” and this year was no exception. In the three divisions, only Larry Hogard (Top Seed/Medalist) of the super senior division made it to the final match as players in other divisions came from out of the pack to march through brackets and provide some excellent drama in the final stages of the match play competition.

35

Super Senior Division: Larry Hogard and Claude Johnson marched their way through the bracket to face each other in the final match. Like all the final matches this year, they were very competitive with each player trading punches and taking turns to have a slight lead in the match. At the end of 17 holes of play the match stood even. On the final hole, both players had excellent tee shots and played their second shots on to the green with both players in position to win the match or tie and move into extra sudden death holes or lose. Both players had difficult putts. Claude was away and made a fine two-putt to secure par, forcing Hogard to make his putt in order win and Larry provided the drama by sinking the testy 12 footer to capture the win and defend his title from 2012. Senior Division: Robert Klingbeil got off to great start by winning his first two matches before he was upset by Tom Janicki 2up. Tom would lose his next match to Dale Robb who moved into the finals to face Bob Dexter. Bob won his first three matches and would get into the finals after his opponent in the semi-final match WD from competition. Like the super senior final match, both Dale and Bob provided great competition, drama and entertainment to the spectators. With the match even on the 17th hole, both players played their tee shots to the middle of the green and facing very-very long putts. Dale made a great two putt for par but Dexter made his putt to take the lead going into the final hole. Both players would par the final hole giving Dexter the trophy and plenty of exciting memories from a great match with Dale.

SMP Championship Division: This division had some great matches right from the get go. Josh Mitroka, the number one seed, marched his way to the semi-finals where he would face Greg Davies the number four seed and

three-time champion of this state match play tournament. Josh played a great semi-final match but Greg Davies was on his game and would win this match 3&2. Greg had six or seven birdies in 16 holes, against Josh to claim his ticket into the final match.

end, the experience of Greg Davies prevailed as he clinched his fourth Michigan Publinx State Match Play Championship with a 2&1 victory over Siegel.

Also making their way to the semi-final matches was Siegel Clore the 18 seed and Weston Benzing the 22 seed. Siegel played some fantastic golf, eventually beating Andy Alvey in 20 holes to move into the semifinal. Weston had some hard fought battles himself, taking 20 holes to defeat David Bartnick in his second match and another 20 holes in his fourth match against Deuce Sherman. Weston eventually lost his semifinal match against Siegel Clore 2&1 to give Siegel a shot at Greg Davies in the finals.

On behalf of the players, we would like to thank, both Joe Schumer, Dean Paesens, their staff and the tournament committee for making this such a great championship for all the players.

Congratulations, Greg, Bob and Larry!

87th U.S. AMATEUR PUBLIC LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP Laurel Hill Golf Club • Lorton VA • July 15-20, 2013 In the first round of competition, Garrett Rank (Canada) and Sam Saunders (Albuquerque, N.M.) set the pace in the morning wave with a rounds of 65 and 66, respectively. You would think the morning wave would be an advantage but the afternoon wave produced the low round of the day. Eric Sugimoto (San Diego, CA) tied the lowest opening round in the history of the USAPL with a 7 under par 63. Ian Davis (Edmond, OK) and Rank would be tied for second with rounds of 65. Twenty-nine players shot red numbers the first day, forcing everyone in the field to think low scores in order to make the cut and the match play field of 64. Michigan had three players competing, Blaze Hogan (Big Rapids), Nathan Clark (Mason) and Nikolaj Brons-Piche from Traverse City.

to the second round and won the second round match in 20 holes.

The Michigan Three had their tournament come to an end as they failed to qualify for the field of 64 and the match play competition. Blaze Hogan from Big Rapids had the best finish shooting 147 and tied for 78th.

When the third round was completed Sugimoto was the only remaining top seed. In other matches, Sam Horsfield was defeated by Zecheng Dou (People’s Republic of China) and Robby Shelton IV (Wilmer, Ala) eliminated Ian Davis. Justin Shin also found his dream run come to an end, losing to Jordan Niebrugge from Mequon, WI.

Round One - Match Play Seems like every major championship involving match play the “Medalist” has a difficult match right out of the gate and many times never advances to the second round. Joshua Stone (Stockton, CA) had to survive a playoff in the morning, in order to qualify for match play and had to take on Garrett Rank. Rank built a three-hole lead through eight holes and then Joshua started to cut into the lead early on the second nine. Eventually the match became even and Joshua survived by defeating Rank on the 19th hole.

Round Three - Match Play

Round Five – Semi-Final Matches Play In the semi-final matches, Jordan Niebrugge squared off against James Erkenbeck (San Diego, CA). Jordan defeated James 3&2 to earn his ticket into the final match. In the other match, it was Michael Kim facing Eric Sugimoto. Michael took advantage of the opportunity and won the match 4&3 to face Jordan in the finals.

Round Four – Quarter-Final Matches Play Eric Sugimoto, the remaining top seed, won his fourth round match 2&1 to advance to semi-final round along with Michael Kim (Del Mar, CA), Jordan Niebrugge (Mequon, WI) and James Erkenbeck of San Diego, CA. Kim, Niebrugge and Erkenbeck all recorded a 1up victory to advance.

Davis, Sugimoto and Horsfield, the other top seeds all advanced to the second round by winning 2&1, 6&5 and 3&2, respectively.

Garrett Rank - Medalist Round Six – Final Match Play

Round Two - Match Play Davis, Sugimoto and Horsfield continued their run in the second round and advanced to third round action. Justin Shin from Canada qualified in the 60th position and has made a nice run to this point. Justin won his first match in 19 holes to advance

Nikolaj Brons-Piche

Eric Sugimoto 41

The final 36-hole match started out in a back and fourth affair with neither player really taking control and each holding brief short leads. It wasn’t until the final 18-holes when things started to change, when Jordan slowly built a four-hole lead. Michael didn’t go quietly, though, as he fought back to a one-hole deficit. The match came down to the last hole and Jordan came out on top to win championship.
