After seven years at the American Legion Post, the dinner is moving to the Hastings High School cafeteria where Moore and more than 59 volunteers will cook up and serve a holiday meal, complete with all of the trimmings for anyone who wishes to attend. 1. This week Christmas arrives. This is the time of year we think about our family and friends and try to do something extra to share the love in our hearts to them. Christmas is known as the time of giving to others and remembering all we have been given. In these coming days, as Christmas arrives, there are people in need we should remember and people who are away from family we can reach out to and make their day a little merrier. The true Spirit of giving can be shown through the family adoption program of Barry County Cares and the Salvation Army, by helping through your church, school or other charitable group, or by helping individually someone in need, and it’s not too late. We should also remember those who have chosen to sacrifice and to be away working this holiday season. The first that come to mind is our Military who protect our country, but there are also many others in the medical and public service area who are on duty Christmas Day just in case we need them. These are people who give all year long and we appreciate what they do every day because some days are tough. Even in our community, Peace on Earth, Goodwill to All seems to get away from us periodically. Hopefully this Christmas Season will remind us to follow the Golden Rule, now and in the coming year. In Hastings (What you always wanted your hometown to be) and Barry County, a very special place in a country like no other on earth, we should be thankful to live here. We pause again this year on “the street” to wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and the Happiest of New Years. 2. Once again the American Legion Post 45 and the Military Order of the Purple Heart Local Chapter 110 are putting on Christmas dinner for the 8th year. This year the dinner will be held at the Hastings High School and the Senior Class will be serving and cleaning up. Last year they served 600 meals to the public. If you don’t have someone to eat dinner with this year, come on up to the High School and eat with some of your friends and neighbors. A big “Thank You” to the Senior Class of 2014, the Hastings High School, and to the Veterans who just keep giving and giving. 3. If we get some snow over winter break, we can go sledding at the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute December 22, 2014 through January 2, 2015 from 9a.m. to 5p.m. Monday through Friday. It’s free and open to all who would like to enjoy the sledding hill and trails through the woods. They are located at 701 W. Cloverdale Road, Hastings. A day out in the cold sledding or walking on the trails would make a great winter day especially if followed by a large hot chocolate, of course! 4. Dewey’s Auto Body continues to present their annual Christmas Light Show. The light and music show entertains from the side of their building at 1111 West Green Street in Hastings. You can park across the street and enjoy the show (turn your car radio to the station on the sign) from 5 to 8a.m. (enjoy the show on your way to work) or from 5:30 to 11p.m. every night. The show is free to all thanks to Dewey’s. 5. If you are out shopping today, and the thought of going home and yet wrapping each one is more than you can do, stop over at AlFresco. They are having a wrapping party today (Saturday) and the proceeds benefit the Barry County United Way. This is a great way to help the community and get out of wrapping. AlFresco is located at 215 S. Jefferson St. in the heart of downtown Hastings where Santa is waiting to help you get ready for the big day. 6. There is still some time to take a ride on the trolley before is goes away until next Christmas. The Trolley picks up passengers between 5p.m. and 8p.m. each evening (except Sundays and the nights it travels to other towns). Pick up is from the north side of the Courthouse Square in Downtown and takes about a 15 minute ride through town, returning to the same location. There is still time to help out with the Needy Feet boot drive. Many families are in need of boots for their children and this is a great way to clean out our closets of boots no one is wearing and help them at the same time. Your boots, or if you don't have boots and want to donate, can be dropped off or a check mailed to Dr. Mansky at 1127 W. State St. (between McDonald's and Big Boy) in Hastings. The boot drive will continue until December 23 so we have just a few days left to fill up his office and help the children of our community keep warm. 8. WBCH Radio and Radio Shack in Hastings have again combined to sponsor “Christmas SOS-Stuff our Station” to collect a bunch of toys for the kids of Barry County who need help this holiday season. They want us to fill the station with toys. The station is open form 6a.m. until 5p.m. weekdays to accept your donation or you can drop a toy off at Radio Shack during their business hours. Toys are distributed by the Barry County United Way with their “Toys for Barry County Kids" where you can also make donations around the county. For more information call 269-945-4010. 9. WBCH Radio is again this year sponsoring the “One Grand Christmas” Shopper Sweepstakes drawing offering you a chance to win prizes daily and a grand prize of $1000 on December 23rd at 7:15a.m. You can enter at more than 100 merchants in Barry County including The General Store on South Jefferson Street. 10. A great gift idea this season is a Barry Bucks Gift Certificate available from the Barry County Chamber of Commerce. Watch the Hastings Mystery Theater every Thursday and Friday at 7p.m. on the Hastings public access channel on the WOW cable system. Enjoy these black and white mystery movies from the 1930's and 1940's. See Charlie Chan, the Saint, Hildegarde Withers, Mr. Moto, Bulldog Drummond, the Lone Wolf and others bring the bad guys to justice. 12. We are having so much fun at The General Store! We have welcomed many old and new customers in and wrapped their gifts for them. We have merchandise coming in almost daily. If you have a need for sweets, come check out our new Jelly Belly display and if you are looking for candles, we have a beautiful Woodwick Candle display. They have a great scent and crackle like campfire wood as they burn. Did you know we have a Hastings Pewter Company in Hastings? There really is and we have a display of their ornaments, key chains, and figurines. They are very nice and detailed and selling fast! People are enjoying our new card and gift shop and we think we are a great addition to South Jefferson Street. You need to come in! 13. Hastings: Where the first Christmas still lives.
