anny Briel never had much patience in a race car when he needed to get to the front of a pack. Today, in retirement, patience is his finest virtue as he relies on tweezers and a magnifying glass for precise placement of racing-related objects in dioramas and models that help him relive the days of a sport that dominated his life. Racing under the name Danny Johnson, the Freeport man chased his dream of earning a place in the Indianapolis 500. He came close, but instead opted for a life devoted to family and to his community. The Thornapple Arts Council, the Barry County Historical Society and the Libraries of Barry County will present a workshop this Thursday (March 29) on “How to Write Your Life Story & Family Profile.” Shirley DeBoer, a professional genealogist, will talk about ideas, information & resources; all you need to bring is paper, pen, & a family photo. The workshop will take place at the new Barry Community Enrichment Center (6:30-8:30pm) on the corner of Center and Broadway in Downtown Hastings. The cost is $30 and includes the workshop with hand-outs and a one year TAC membership. If you are already a member, the workshop is $15. Limited space is available so register now at 269-945-2002. 2. For those of you interested in learning more about the highway and bridge project to be built in Hastings this summer, MDOT will hold a PreConstruction Open House this Wednesday, March 28 at Hastings City Hall to discuss their upcoming construction work along M-37 & M-43. The open house will be held from 4-7pm and the public is invited and encouraged to attend. 3. The Dewey’s Auto Body Great Gravity Grand Prix Soap Box Derby 2012 will again be held during Hastings Summerfest. Now is the time to start planning your entry for the big race. You may get your entry blanks and more information at Dewey’s Auto Body on West Green Street in Hastings or call 269-945-4915. Proceeds from this event help support the YMCA of Barry County and the Thornapple Arts Council. 4. The Pierce Cedar Creek Institute will present a program about “Companion Planting” this Thursday (March 29) from 6:30-8pm. The presentation discusses many ideas to help you become a more successful gardener through companion planting, the goal of which is to get plant communities to work together to create thriving ecosystem. The Nashville Fire Department will serve a Pancake Breakfast today (Saturday) and tomorrow from 7 until 1 at the Fire Station. The menu includes pancakes, maple syrup, biscuits & gravy, coffee, OJ and milk. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for ages 6-12 and free for kids under 5. Proceeds are used to fund equipment needs of the department. 6. Today (Saturday) from 10am to 5pm and tomorrow from 2 to 5pm the Lake Odessa Museum will present a Bridal Show featuring a unique exhibit of weddings from the past and present. Admission is free to this very special event. 7. The annual Meals on Wheels Gift Basket Silent Auction is seeking baskets for this year’s event.
