he Steeds of Woodland are the 2012 Barry County March of Dimes Ambassador Family. Parents Micah and Sara Steed didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t realize what March of Dimes was all about until Sara developed complications while pregnant with their twins, Gideon (left, in stroller) and Andrew (right, in stroller). With help from March of Dimes the twins have been thriving for a year and a half, along with brothers Caleb (far left) and Elijah. The Steeds and event organizers invite everyone to join as they March for Babies in the annual charity fundraiser Saturday, May 5, at Fish Hatchery Park in Hastings. 1. The annual “March for Babies” sponsored by the March of Dimes kicks off next Saturday morning (8:30am) from Fish Hatchery Park in Hastings. Following the opening ceremonies & ribbon cutting, the parade participants walk along a four mile route through Downtown Hastings & the River Walk Trail, returning to Fish Hatchery Park where everyone enjoys lunch, the award ceremonies, music and family fun activities. The goal is to raise funds to support research on premature births and what can be done to help prevent them so that all babies begin life healthy. The parade participants will be asking for your support by walking and/or pledging to the cause and your participation is much appreciated. To sponsor a team, sign up for the walk, make a pledge or donation or to get more information log on to www.marchforbabies.org 2. Make sure that your dinner this Friday evening isn’t much more than a snack so that you and the family can take advantage of the annual “Hastings-BIRCH Fire Department Pancake Breakfast” next Saturday morning (May 5) from 7 until 11am at the Fire Station in Downtown Hastings. Huge all-you-can-eat servings of pancakes, sausage, coffee, OJ & milk are yours for a donation. Be as generous as you can as the bucks raised will help the department purchase some much needed equipment. As a group, firefighters represent all that is good about volunteering in America, sacrificing the most in time & effort and in lives lost. As such, they deserve our support and encouragement. Stop by, enjoy a great meal and thank the volunteers for all that they do in our community. Even if you cannot attend the breakfast, donations of any amount are gratefully accepted. 3. The Pierce Cedar Creek Institute will sponsor two Spring Wildflower Hikes next Saturday (May 5) through the institute property, hiking back to the Little Grand Canyon to see the diversity of wildflowers. The first hike is from 9-11am, the second hike is from 11-1pm. Cost is $3 for members, $6 for nonmembers. Next Saturday is also Volunteer Work Day-Garlic Mustard Pull from 1:30-4pm. The institute needs your help in protecting their wildflowers from this invasive species. Wear long pants and sturdy shoes; meet at the Volunteer Center. 4. One of the biggest celebrations at the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute is the annual Mother’s Day Brunch and this year promises to be no exception. The Brunch is Sunday, May 13 with seatings at 11:30am and 1pm, featuring an expanded menu including a carving station and a larger than usual selection of entrees & desserts. Preregistration and pre-payment is required for brunch and since this one is usually a sellout, you should call today. Next Saturday & Sunday, May 5-6, is the annual Tri-Rivers Museum Tour from 11am until 5pm each day. Over 20 small museums are located along the Thornapple, Flat and Grand Rivers in our area. Admission is free on these days and most of the locations will have special displays. Maps and information about the tour and the museums are available at each location or log onto www.charltonpark.org 6. The Barry County Bar Association will host a reception this Wednesday from 11am until noon at the Courts & Law Building Community Room honoring this year’s Liberty Bell Award recipient, Fred Jacobs, with the Law Day Celebration & presentation of the award in the Barry County Circuit Courtroom to follow from noon until 1pm. The speaker will be Attorney General Bill Schuette. You are all invited to attend the Celebration and help honor the very deserving recipient, Fred Jacobs. 7. Nominations for the Exchange Club of Hastings “Book of Golden Deeds Award” for 2012 are now being sought by the club. This exchange club award is to honor members of our community who serve their fellow citizens, especially those whose quiet, unassuming dedication may result in him or her going unrecognized for their activities. The deadline for applications is May 4 and may be picked up at the Reminder or at the Hastings Public Library. Call 269-948-2763 for more information. 8. Michigan Blood is the sole supplier of blood to Pennock Hospital and they will hold a Blood Drive this Friday, May 4 (as they do every first Friday of the month) from 10am until 5pm at the Pennock Hospital Conference Center.
