f every garden begins with a dream, as the sign in one garden reads, then Alex (left) and brother Jonathan Spicer are living one that their father, Rick, designed, complete with a hillside waterfall tumbling into a koi pond. The pond serves as a frog-hunting playground and even those frogs that aren’t real serve to remind many a visitor of the famous Mark Twain frog-jumping contest in Calaveras County. Participants on the 15th annual “Day in the Garden” tour sponsored by the Thornapple Garden Club Saturday, July 14, will have the chance for their own reminisces at the Spicer gardens and home, one of six gardens featured for their artistic use of nature’s gifts. In addition to the gardens of Rick and Carrie Spicer, other gardens will be featured at the homes of Thomas and Denise Allen, Phil and Betty VanNoord, Jim and Karen Whitney, Rick and Susan Achtziger, and Jerry and Phyllis Essex. Also offered will be the popular Garden Thyme Market on the Barry County Courthouse lawn. See inside for the story.
