housands will again descend on Freeport for the village’s annual Homecoming celebration, scheduled this year for Aug. 7 and 8. A lucky bunch of 500 of them will get to stay and to continue calling Freeport home. The reasons they come and the charm that keeps them there is what the village celebrates each year. Fire chief Jim Yarger (left) is a lifer and, with his community service as fire chief, continues to pour himself into a village he’s come to know as caring and fun-loving. Lifelong county resident Howard “Hoot” Gibson will also be celebrating that love for community as an exhibitor and as a judge for the dynamic car show that returns after a two-year absence. Parades, food, free activities for kids along with traditional down home contests like horse shoes and bale rolling will give visitors a taste of what smalltown life in America once was and still is in Freeport. If you didn’t join this year, plan to next year. This is the last week of the summer for Toddler and Preschool Story Times before a break. Toddlers meet Tuesday and Preschoolers Friday, each at 10:30am about Picnics. Tuesday afternoons is Young Chess Tutorr ing at 4:00 & Chess/Checkers Club and Genealogy Club at 6:00. Movie Memories and Milestones will be watching “The Bridge on the River Kwai” Thursday at 4:30pm. 2. This is prime time for the Farmers Market. July, August and September are some of the best months for many fruits and vegetables in Michigan. Enjoy the fresh flavors of the season, support our local farmers, and know your food is grown right here. And it’s fun to walk downtown and see people you know and catch up. Join your neighbors Wednesdays from 1-6pm and Saturdays 9am-1pm. 3. At The Splash Park on Monday evenings at 7pm is African Drumming. If you haven’t been down, you will want to catch it this week because it is the last one. Come out, get some dinner at one of the great restaurants downtown, & then listen to Dennis Downing perform. 4. Playing at the Plaza Thursday has Zeemo the Yo-Yo Man. He is a juggling champion & yo-yo expert performing for 20 years and sure to amaze all ages. The Teen Art Program has Clay Creation Part 2. This week learn of glazing techniques and finish your piece from last week. Evening Entertainmentt at 6:30pm has Maiden Voyage. This Hastings area group of 4 women has a sound described as folk rock with a heavy dose of pop and tight 3 part harmony. Sounds like a great line-up again! 5. Fridays at the Fountain has the Thornapple Players this week. Take something to sit on and your lunch to the Courthouse Lawn at noon and see what they have going. You can come and go as you need to, but I’m guessing once they start you won’t want to leave. 6. Dairy Queen has their annual Miracle Treat Day July 30, 5-9pm. All proceeds go to Helen Devos Children’s Hospital so this is a great opportunity to go have some ice cream, play games, run the Smile run and just have fun with the family and know your helping a great place. There will be DQ specials all day to enjoy so you can go anytime. 7. Friday’s Riverbank Music Series s in Middleville has the Boogie Woogie Babies this week. Come out to the Stagecoach Park at 6:30pm with chairs or blankets and enjoy the music by the river. 8. Wetland Weeds Work Day at the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute is Thursday, July 30 9-noon. The wetlands have both phragmites and purple loosestrife which volunteers will be working to identify and treat. Wear long pants and bring rubber boots and gloves(also available at the Institute). No Family Left Indoors s is taking a hike this week. The North Country Trail is the destination for this hike which will highlight some of the recent work on the trail. It is located NE of Middleville at Crane Rd. 9. It’s time for the Red Barns Spectacular Car Show & Swap Meet at the Gilmore Car Museum. August 1 is the 35th show & hailed as the “Grand Daddy” of all antique, classic & special interest car shows. There will be thousands of cars to RV’s to fire trucks, boats, & bicycles to see. Barry County Fair wraps up today with plenty of fun by Julie Makarewicz Staff Writer Although official numbers are not in yet, attendance at the 163rd annual Barry County Fair has been strong, thanks in part to nearly ideal weather conditions all week. Storms rolled through a week ago as 4-H members brought in their nonlivestock projects for judging. But after the dark clouds left the area Saturday evening, a double rainbow appeared over the fairgrounds — as if a promise of fairer weather ahead. Bleachers have been filled for the 4-H livestock shows. The grandstand attractions have seen great attendance. And the midway has been filled with people especially in the evenings and on kids day. And there’s still time to enjoy the last activities at the fair today and tonight, July 25. Barry County Fair Board President Dennis Redman said he couldn’t ask for better weather. Thursday and Friday, 4Hers sold their large and small animals at auction. Even threat of avian influenza couldn’t spoil the experience for many involved in the poultry project. Instead of having their live birds at

Buyers then were given the photos and will make arrangements to have the birds they purchased delivered. Highlights to end the fair today include the show of champions competition for 4-Hers. This contest pits the showmanship champions from the different species at the fair against each other. Each showman must show all of the species to earn the

overall showman title for the fair. Antique tractor pulls begin at 10 a.m. in the grand-

stand, waterball fights with local fire departments at 10 a.m., a pole vault contest at 11 a.m., and the great 4-H race at 1 p.m. Barrel racing and other speed events will take place in the horse arena. There will be antique tractor demonstrations, the tractor parade, a livestock fashion show at 3 p.m. in the show arena. Two litters of piglets have been born at the Miracle of Birth tent so far during fair week, and cows are ready to have their calves any time. As always, parking at the fair is free. Gate admission to the fair is $5 per adult, and children 12 and younger are free. Senior citizens pay just $3 per visit. Demolition derby tickets are $9 and is not included in the price of gate admission. Parking at the fair is free.
