The area’s largest charity golf tournament, the Bill Porter Memorial Charity Golf Classic, tees it up for the ninth consecutive year on Friday, June 22 at the Hastings Country Club. Over the years, the event has raised nearly $200,000 for local charities in a unique fundraising format that has chosen organizations each year vying for votes and the largest division of money raised. Warming up for the event this week were representatives from this year’s charities and the event sponsors, front row (from left) Mark Kolanowski and Nancy Goodin of Hastings City Bank, co-signature sponsor, Carolyn Bird, Lighthouse on the Lake, Denny Shaver, Maple Valley Community Center of Hope, Pam Tava, Navigate, Bill Wallace of Hastings Mutual Insurance, co-signature sponsor, Michael Chapman, Two or Three Together, and Lynn Janson of the host Hastings Country Club. Back row, Janie Bergeron, Green Gables Haven, Dan Hill of Hastings Mutual Insurance, and Tom Wilt, Camp Algonquin YMCA. FATHER’S DAY CARDS

1. The opening celebration of the third annual Sculpture Exhibit in Downtown Hastings is next Friday evening from 5-8pm and will feature 23 sculptures placed throughout downtown. The event will include music from six different groups and information about each sculpture featuring a docent or the artists themselves. This year’s exhibit features 10 new sculptures on loan and available for sale in addition to 13 sculptures purchased and donated to the City of Hastings for permanent display. There is no charge for the exhibit and it is open to all. For more information call TAC at 945-2002 or pick up a brochure at locations around downtown. This event is the perfect chance for those in the city to use the Trolley Around Town to ride downtown, view the exhibit, have dinner at one of our fine restaurants (remember June is Taste Appreciation Month) and listen to the music. The sculptures on loan are available for sale to individuals or you might want to gather some group of which you are a member and donate a sculpture to the permanent exhibit. For more information about purchasing a sculpture call the City of Hastings at 945-2461. 2. For over 100 years the Hastings City Band has played music each summer in Hastings. They play marches, patriotic music and other band selections beginning at 7:30pm each Wednesday evening from now through mid-July. This is the second year that the concerts will take place on the Courthouse Square in Downtown Hastings and the location has proven to be a great choice. The concerts are free to all and sponsored by the City of Hastings and area businesses. 3. The Fridays at the Fountain Concert Series starts this Friday and continues through mid-August. The opening performance features the Third Coast Steel Band featuring steel drums, bass, and drums playing Island Music. The weekly concerts are from 11:30am until 1pm by the fountain on Courthouse Square in Downtown Hastings. Bring your lunch or buy your lunch from one of the many Downtown Hastings restaurants, come and go as your schedule allows and enjoy the show. If it rains, move to the Hastings City Bank (the official bank of South Jefferson Street). Friday at the Fountain concerts are sponsored by the City of Hastings, the Thornapple Arts Council and area businesses. 4. The No Family Left Indoors series of weekly programs begins this Wednesday and continues through August 14, sponsored by Pennock Health Services, the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute and various other host organizations around Barry County. This Wednesday features “Friday Night at Camp” at Camp Algonquin, sponsored by the YMCA of Barry County. Activities include a variety of fun activities including games, a climbing wall and a boat ride among others. The programs are from 6:30 until 8pm featuring a different location each week and they are free to all. For more information call 269-721-4190 or visit www.barryoutdoorfun.com. 5. The Hastings Public Library Summer Reading Program, “Dream Big-Read” for children preschool to 12th grade is now underway and, as usual, there will be a program every Wednesday, 2pm, at the library. This week features Maciek the Magician. The program is free and open to all. 6. The Hastings Public Library celebrates its 5th year of serving our community and as a special feature Newberry award winning author, Gary Schmidt, will discuss “Writing for young people” using his new book, “Okay for Now.” Admission is free but you do need a ticket which you can pick up at the library. The program is at the Barry Enrichment Center (Leason Sharpe Hall) and will be followed by refreshments and a book signing. Call the library at 945-4263 for more information. 7. A great way to celebrate Father’s Day (Sunday, June 17) is to treat dad to a Sunday Summer Dinner at the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute: dinner at 5pm & a free program at 6pm. Summer Sunday Dinners are served “family style seating” so you can meet new people. You must pre-register and pre-pay for dinner at 269-721-4190 or www.cedarcreekinstitute.org. The program on Father’s Day (free to all) features the institute’s undergraduate researcher and fellows as they explain their projects and what they hope to discover. 8. The 12th annual Nashville Route “66” Classic & Antique Car Show is next Saturday (June 16) from 8am until 2pm in Downtown Nashville sponsored by the Nashville Car Club and Nashville Area Merchants. The fun includes a breakfast served by the Nashville Firefighters, hundreds of cars, food booths, door prizes, raffles and more. On the same day from 9am until 2pm the TAC will sponsor “Nashville Art on the Lawn” a show focused on the work of Maple Valley artists and featuring a hands-on chance for kids of all ages to create art at the painting stations. Car show proceeds go to local charities. 9. The Gilmore Car Museum will present the 2nd annual All-Air Cooled Car Show next Saturday from 9am to 6pm at the museum. This is a special show dedicated to all air-cooled cars and vintage motorcycles. For more information call 269-671-5089 or log on to www.gilmorecarmuseum.org 10. Next Friday Middleville features the Middleville Farmers Market from 9-1 in Downtown Middleville followed by the Riverbank Music Series from 6:30-8:30 in Stagecoach Park featuring the Nowhere Band (Beatles Music). The concert is free of charge and you are invited to bring a chair or blanket to sit on and a snack or dinner to enjoy while you listen to the concert. 11.The 3rd season of Lyrics on the Lawn, a free music series performed on the lawn of the Putnam Public Library in Nashville, begins this Thursday (June 14) with a performance from the Blue Water Rockers, a 50-60’s rock and roll band. The rain location is the Nashville United Methodist Church. 12. Do not forget that next Thursday is Flag Day and flying the flag is the right thing to do on this day. 13. Occupation: Physician, Walter Reed Medical Center The lessons he learned in the classrooms of Hastings High School helped Jason Kaiser become a success, but it’s the personal lessons taught by his parents and reinforced by his teachers that have helped the newly minted physician build a life. “Maybe that’s the benefit of a small town and school,” Kaiser, 36, reflected during a telephone interview last week following his graduation from the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. “You may not have as many opportunities as you might have in a larger city or a more affluent community, but it makes you appreciate what you do have, and it makes you want to share it with others.” Kaiser, a 1994 Hastings graduate, says he gained a lot from his high school years, enough to obtain a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in biomechanical engineering from

As part of his Peace Corps service in Ghana, Jason Kaiser helped a local community of widows pooling resources by living together to obtain microbusiness loans for shade trees and agriculture supplies. Stanford University. That fueled a desire to move closer to medicine and a position with a startup medical device design company near San Francisco. The work was compelling, Kaiser says, and his boss, who was also a friend and mentor, urged him toward management. But something else — something that stemmed from his Hastings High School days — was at work. “I had been volunteering at the San Francisco Children’s Hospital, and an opportunity opened to head a playground program in the Tenderloin district,” says Kaiser. “I got more satisfaction out of that, out of helping people, than I did anything else, so I made the decision to pursue medical school.” Not before a 26-month stint as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ghana, though. Working as a volunteer in a local health center in the northern African country,

Kaiser soon encountered work that reinforced the lessons on sharing that he learned way back in Hastings. “A local businessman sought my help in working with widowed women, the majority of which, in Ghana, live in clustered compounds to pool their resources,” explains Kaiser. “They were too poor to live on their own, so I worked with the women to obtain microbusiness loans that were used to plant shade trees and to cultivate an area that they could grow foods and goods which, in turn, could be sold for income.” When he returned to the United States, Kaiser learned of a U.S. Navy Health Service Scholarship Program offering to pay all medical school costs for candidates willing to sign to become an officer, to complete a six-year residency requirement, and then to serve a six-year active-duty hitch.

This special message brought to you by …

Kaiser won the scholarship and along with it an experience at MSU’s medical school that provided two years of East Lansing classes and two years learning rural medicine based in Marquette and serving most of the Upper Peninsula. “Maybe that’s the benefit of a small town and school. You may not have as many opportunities as you might have in a larger city or a more affluent community, but it makes you appreciate what you do have, and it makes you want to share it with others.” Jason Kaiser

“It’s been sort of a meandering path and probably not your orthodox way to becoming a doctor,” Kaiser says, reminiscing, prior to beginning his six-year residency Friday, June 8, at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C., “but because of my life experiences, I’ve gathered perspective from a variety of walks of life. “I’ve seen dire poverty in Africa, as well as the rural poverty of the Upper Peninsula. In urban San Francisco, I worked with people who have a lot of medical, physical, social, emotional and psychological issues. It’s all been very humbling.” And that Kaiser considers a gift from his upbringing in Hastings. “My mom was an RN at Pennock,” relates Kaiser of his mother, Peggy, who retired after a 36-year career, “and she always reminded me to stay humble and to treat the people you work with with respect.” Kaiser found the same perspective at Hastings High

School where he remembers strong challenges from teachers and a respectful attitude from classmates. “We pushed each other,” recalls Kaiser. “If someone got a 95 on a test, you wanted to get a 96. But it was a friendly competition. I’ve met a lot of people in graduate school and medical school who were extremely competitive — and it was cutthroat.” The difference, Kaiser maintains, is the value placed on his education in Hastings by his parents and by his teachers. Kaiser’s father, Stephen, had a 40-year career as a biology and science teacher at Hastings High School, and Jason adds that, because many of his colleagues were also the children of teachers, education may have been an ingrained value. But he maintains that the same value was present for all at the school. Classes were rigorous recalls Kaiser, especially Advanced Placement classes he took from teachers Karl Schwartz and Larry Christopher. “They demanded a lot of their students, especially those they saw potential in,” says Kaiser. “It instilled in me a personal determination to succeed.” Encouragement to succeed also took less direct forms. Kaiser says he will always remember the encouragements of teachers Jim and Kathy Oliver to explore different parts of the world and diverse cultures and of Gary Ivinskas to seek adventurous experiences and to push outside a comfort zone to try new things. Kaiser has certainly followed those lessons, though he does carry one regret. “I wish I had had my father as a teacher,” says

Jason Kaiser Kaiser, who did play one year of basketball with his dad as a coach. “He was dedicated to his students, he had energy, and he loved to be a mentor — but I’ve had 36 years of teaching from him, so I won out in the long run.” Today, Kaiser still holds on to his love of basketball in which he competed all four high school years and to tennis and cross country, each of which he invested two years. “My involvement in athletics helped hone my competitive side,” says Kaiser, who concedes an interest in the NBA players currently being played — with some reservation. “It does build character, but it’s still a game,” notes Kaiser of all sports. “So many get caught up in it and lose sight of what really matters. There’s way too much coverage of issues that are inane and trite. “If people could put the same effort into volunteering in their community as they do sports, I think this country would be a little better off.” Spoken like a Saxon who received a fine education — both from the classroom and from his community. - Doug VanderLaan

FOCUS on Prevention. . . Prevention in our Community SATF PARTNERS

RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS: • Locally, the SATF has partnered with local alcohol retailers and law enforcement to increase compliance rates with laws and regulations regarding the sale of alcohol to those under 21 years of age. Currently, our county’s compliance rate is at 87%, up 5% from 2011. (SATF, Winter 2012) • The Third Annual Barry County Youth Leadership Summit hosted over 150 Barry County youth who are now working together to make their community a better and safer place by spreading the message of being positive and “Above The Influence”. According to the event survey, 94% of participants are now inspired to make some type of positive change in their community or school. (YLS, 2012) • This year the SATF increased community access to safe medicine disposal by placing 3 permanent medicine take back drop boxes in local law enforcement agencies. These sites are in addition to 7 local pharmacies which also offer medicine collection. (SATF, 2012) • Since January of 2011, the SATF and partners have collected and properly disposed of: * 1,898 pounds of unwanted, unused prescription and over-thecounter medications through pharmacy collections and Household Hazardous Waste Collections (Yellow Jug, 2011-2012, BEDHD 20112012) * 23,846 pills and 223 fluid ounces of controlled substances, such as prescription pain medications and narcotics (BEDHD and Barry County Sheriff’s Dept, 2011-2012) • The SATF continues its work with many community partners to increase awareness of new and emerging drug trends, such as synthetic marijuana, Medical Marijuana, and methamphetamine awareness.
