or 20 years, pharmacist Dave Jasperse, in his Bosley Pharmacy “South Jefferson Street News” column, contrived convoluted reasons why a fictitious St. Patrick’s Day parade in Hastings fell through, repeatedly. Then, in 2005, all of that blarney was pushed aside as the “Biggest Little St. Patrick’s Day Parade” came to fruition and marched up and down South Jefferson Street to the delight of hundreds of fun-seekers. Jasperse was the grand marshal of that first parade and is again receiving the honor Tuesday. A businessman for more than 40 years, a behind-the-scenes philanthropist and member of the Hastings City Council for 39 years, Jasperse (seated) is shown in front of his new South Jefferson Street business venture, The General Store. 1. After a long tough winter, the arrival of Spring is marked by the 11th Annual South Jefferson Street St. Patrick's Day Parade to be held this Tuesday afternoon at 4p.m. down South Jefferson Street. It has been a tiresome winter season and the parade annually marks the beginning of what promises to be a glorious time of the year. Everyone is invited to come on down and enjoy the parade. Better yet, you are invited to be in the parade. The parade will line up in the alley behind WBCH in Downtown Hastings, march south down South Jefferson Street, ending at Center Street. It is almost three blocks of St. Patrick's Day Celebration. You can call the Parade Master Ken Radant at 269935-3414 (WBCH) and register if you like or you can just show up at parade time, get a list of parade rules, find yourself a place in line and march in the parade. The parade is expected to be led by the American Legion Color Guard and include, a fire truck or two, a bunch of police cars, plenty of green tractors, a beauty queen or two, maybe some music, a bunch of those of Irish heritage, The General Store Bug, The General Store Bike, and more. The Grand Marshal of this year's parade is none other than Dave Jasperse. Dave has worked on “the street” for over 45 years serving our community. Dave and Emily have not only served the community as business owners for many years now, but have given in many ways to various charities, organizations, causes, and people in need and are very deserving of this honor. (I'm Dave's ghostwriter. We all know Dave and Emily wouldn't say those things, but I would!) Whether you participate or just come down to watch, be on time. This is an enthusiastic, very colorful, but very short, parade and if you're late, you could miss it all! 2. Before and after the parade, you will want to come in The General Store. Tuesday is also THE GRAND OPENING OF THE GENERAL STORE. We will have drawings and prizes every hour of the day so you will want to stop by early and sign up. Hollenbeck's Hotdogs, music by Tony LaJoye, Green Carnations, and Face Painting will be going on after the parade so it will be the place to be. There will be fliers given out in the parade with a coupon to use, too, so if you haven't been in, this will be a great time to see what we have. And if you have been in, you will want to come back in to see what is new because new merchandise keeps being added to our shelves. The Michigan section exploded this week. It's turning Spring, but we are sure you will need something with the mitten on it! 3. Tonight, March 14 at 7p.m. is the Annual Mary Youngs Concert at the Hastings First United Methodist Church. This concert is full of music Mary loved and in dedication to her there will be a freewill offering to provide two $1000 scholarships to Hastings high School students who have been in school music and athletic programs all four years of high school. There will be quite a line-up of performers that can be found in last week's Reminder. It looks like a music lover's dream! 4. Hastings Public Library has a Frugal Living Exchange coming up entitled “Green Cleaning” with Jen Howell. If you have the energy after the parade and The General Store Grand Opening, it is Tuesday, March 17 at 6:15-8p.m. 5. Other ways to celebrate the holiday include participating in Irish Song Time this week as we move the Blarney Stone (the soapbox) to the street in front of The General Store and you sing us an Irish Tune for a $5 gift certificate. Sing what many call “The Irish National Anthem”, (Danny Boy) and get a $10 gift certificate. You can dance an Irish Jig from atop the Blarney Stone and get free Corn Beef and Cabbage at the County Seat. 6. If you are looking for a way to start off celebrating St. Patricks Day earlier, the Barry County Commission on Aging has a party from10:30-12:30p.m. After that, all Seniors are invited to meet behind WBCH at 3p.m. and walk in the parade with the C.O.A. and then you can come by The General Store for a Hollenbeck Hotdog and a Green Carnation. 7. The Barry County Commission on Aging is seeking baskets for this year's Meals on Wheels Gift Basket Silent Auction. Individuals, businesses and groups are invited to assemble a basket for the auction. Your participation in donating a basket will be much appreciated. The deadline for entry is April 6 and the auction will be taking place from April 10 through May 16. You will also want to save April 10th for the Spaghetti Supper at the C.O.A. 8. Watch Hastings Mystery Theater every Thursday and Friday at 7p.m. on the Hastings public access channel on the WOW cable system. Enjoy these black and white mystery movies from the 1930's and 1940's. See Charlie Chan, the Saint, Hildegarde Withers, Mr. Moto, Bulldog Drummond, the Lone Wolf, and others bring the bad guys to justice. 9. You will want to be on the lookout for bikers now that the weather is taking a turn toward Spring. More people will be starting to get their bikes out, dusted off and ready to ride. There is a certain breed of bikers though that far surpasses many of us and they will be coming to town to practice for the big race coming up. The Barry-Roubaix Bike Race, also known as the Killer Gravel Road Race, is the largest gravel road race in the United States, will be all over downtown Hastings on March 28. Up to 3,500 bicyclists of all ages challenge themselves on 23, 36, or 62 mile courses. Keep an eye out for The General Store Bike and rider, Kevin Dickinson.
