1. The South Jefferson Street St. Patrick's Day Parade has grown into such a terrific event that the Merry Merchants lack the time to hold another parade so close to it, hence we will not sponsor an Easter Parade this year. Therefore the parade falls on YOU. You are invited to don your Easter Bonnet or Straw Hat and take a leisurely stroll down “the street” this week, enjoying the sights and sounds of Spring as you checkout the restaurants, shops and services offered on SJS, the “Heart of Downtown Hastings”. Visit The General Store on your way, show us your Easter Hat and get a free Cadbury Easter Egg as our thanks for visiting us this Easter season.

Also to help you celebrate the holiday, come on in for our Easter Egg Hunt. The Easter Bunny will hide a dozen Easter Eggs throughout the store filled with goodies. At least 1 egg will contain a $10 gift certificate. Limit 1 egg per hunter. You should also enter our drawing for a large Floppy Eared Easter Bunny on display in our Easter window to be given away April 4th.

2. The Barry-Roubaix Killer Gravel Road Race is today. If you go out and about, you will want to keep that in mind and along with the streets closed to traffic. They will be on the move at 10a.m. and most will be done between 12-1:30p.m. Look out for The General Store Bike and Kevin Dickinson. He will be in wave 14 starting at 10:26a.m. This is his 3rd year so he is sure to be moving right along!

3. Calling all Middle School and High School writers! The City of Hastings and Thornapple Arts Council is conducting a story writing contest to include one of our downtown sculptures. They are asking middle and high school students to submit a story about “The Gatherer”. This character leaves lots of room for you to be creative in your story including Hastings and the surrounding area.

Stop by City Hall and see Maiya Merrick to pick up your entry and permission slips which are due April 30 and the winner will be announced May 18th. Get those creative juices flowing! This could be a step on to fame and fortune!

4. Are you thinking about helping out The Barry County Commission on Aging by donating a basket for the Meals on Wheels Gift Basket Silent Auction? Individuals, businesses, and organizations that participate will be much appreciated. The deadline for entry of your basket is this next week, April 6. The auction starts with the Spaghetti Supper on April 10 and ends May 16 at the Meals on Wheels WalkaThon. The Spaghetti Dinner(April 10) will be from 4:30-6:30p.m. includes all the traditional trimmings along with the live, toe-tapping music of The Grumpy Old Men. Tickets are $6 in advance, $8 at the door, and children 4 and under are free.

5. You are again invited to participate in the annual Good Friday Cross Walk this Friday morning in Hastings. The walk kicks off at 9:30a.m. from Grace Lutheran Church on North Street, walks around town and returns to the church. It takes about one hour and you can walk the entire length or you can join the group for as long as you like. The group walks together, carrying a cross and in silence to “provide opportunity for reflection for the world and for all people”. All faiths are invited to participate and you can call 9459414 for more information.

6. If you are looking for a place to eat Easter Brunch, the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute still has some room for the 11:30a.m. seating. The cost for members is $16 for adults and $8 for children and non-members $18 for adults and $9 for children. After the brunch there will be a Wildlife Rehabilitation program. Dawn Koning is a local, licensed wildlife rehabilitator who has been helping injured and orphaned wild animals for over 47 years. She will be sharing stories and photos from her experiences. Audience members can expect to “laugh, cry, and walk away knowing more about wild animals and how to care for them”. You do not have to attend brunch to come to this free program.

7. How are you coming on filling up those Easter Baskets for the little ones (and lets not forget the big ones too!)? We have lots of things to help you at The General Store. We have various sizes of stuffed animals from a nice cuddly bunny to a grumpy old cat. We have all sorts of books, toys, puzzles, and games for all ages and of course, we have the Easter Candy. We can show you the old fashioned chocolate caramels and suckers or the marshmallow chicks and bunnies. It may not feel quite like spring today, but it is coming and we can help you at least look like you believe it.

8. Join Free Spring Movies at the Hastings 4 Cinema. March 28 & 29 you can see “Rio 2” at 9a.m. and 10a.m. Saturday & Sunday.

what is placemaking???

Spring is finally here and Middleville is ready to begin the construction of a new community pavilion in Sesquicentennial Park! Construction is slated to commence during the week of April 6th and you are invited to join us on Thursday, April 2nd at 11:30 a.m. for the Groundbreaking Ceremony!

This exciting project is the culmination of three years of planning by the Village of Middleville. The pavilion, funded in part through MDNR Trust Fund Grant of $300,000 is also made possible with financial help from village bond proceeds, the Thornapple Trail Association, the Downtown Development Authority, and the Local Development Finance Authority.

The total project cost of $673,510 will cover the construction of the pavilion and parking area, the construction of a new canoe/kayak launch, and the relocation of utilities. Shortly following the pavilion groundbreaking, the replacement of the Main Street Bridge, the extension of the Paul Henry Trail, and the installation of a Veterans Memorial will occur.

It takes a place to create a community, and a community to create a place.

The pavilion will be a fantastic improvement to the space located across the street from the Thornapple/Paul Henry Trail head. It will be situated along the East Bank of the Thornapple River right downtown in the heart of the community. Upon completion, the pavilion will establish itself as a key component in the revitalization of downtown Middleville.

Complimenting other riverbank improvements to the park and trail, the pavilion will act as a gathering place for Middleville residents and visitors alike and serve as an access point to the river and the extended trail. It will also provide a permanent home for the Farmers Market and will host existing community events and future enrichments. The pavilion will be a space where everyone has the opportunity to connect, to build and strengthen relationships among community members, visitors and businesses. It will strengthen Middleville’s sense of place and enhance community pride and ownership. So make sure you take a few minutes to “Meet in the Middle” and take advantage of all that Middleville has to offer.

Placemaking is a movement that envisions public spaces as the heart of every community. It’s a transformative approach that inspires people to create and improve their public spaces. Placemaking strengthens the connection between people and the places they share. When community members identify with and love the place they share together, it creates strong social capital that is advantageous to everyone, attracting more business and newcomers to the area!

Placemaking is already occurring in Middleville whether you are familiar with the term or not. It takes root when a community expresses needs and desires about the places in their lives, such as the need for more restaurants or gathering spaces. However, once the term is introduced it enables people to realize just how inspiring their collective vision can be.

It lets them see with a new perspective the potential of parks, downtowns, waterfronts, plazas, neighborhoods, streets and markets.
