Wilkins and Louden are members of the event planning committee which chose this year's "Cartoon Characters" theme that's already being celebrated with 23 life-size cartoon cutouts in area businesses and public spaces. It will be a weekend of cartoon fun and superhero endeavors from food to music, cars and motorcycles to pinewood and soapbox derby races, and crafts to multiple sporting events. 1. The Hastings Summerfest Celebration, the 38th annual, is next weekend and all are invited to come to town and enjoy the festivities. The Summerfest Committee, a dedicated team of volunteers led by Mike Hallifax, has planned a program of activities that includes events for all ages to enjoy. The dozens of activities include sporting events at Tyden Park, Fish Hatchery Park, First Ward Park and Downtown Hastings. Arts and Crafts tents will fill the Courthouse Square and the Entertainment Stage is booked solid Friday and Saturday with acts to entertain you. The Elks Entertainment tent returns and a bunch of concessions are available to feed the family. You can pick up a Summerfest Schedule almost any place around town (The General Store for sure!) and use it to plan for a fun filled weekend the whole family will enjoy. Call the Summerfest Hotline (269-945-2454) for more information or to sign up for a sporting event or the Big Parade. While all Summerfest events are free, it does cost some bucks to put on the show, so, if you have any to spare, make a donation at the Summerfest Booth. 2. Two parades will again be featured at Summerfest, the Grand Parade (“Cartoons”) will be at12:30pm on Saturday and the Children's Parade will march down the street beginning at 1:00pm on Sunday during the Car Show. Both parades start at Boltwood and State and travel through Downtown. You must pre-register for the Grand Parade on the Summerfest Hotline. To march or ride in the Kid's Parade, you must be a kid and show up and your hosts (the Hastings Car Club) will find you a spot in the lineup. 3. The 5th annual Dewey's Auto Body Great Gravity Grand Prize Soap Box Derby will take place at 2pm next Saturday on N. Hanover St. ending at the First Ward (Skate) Park. The 5 categories include three age groups, an artistic group and the corporate group. You can find out more info at 269-945-4915 or www.deweysautobody.com. 4. As in years past, the Summerfest Entertainment Stage will be on the corner of Court and Church Streets in Downtown Hastings. Featured acts this year include Martin & Lamm, Glen Kaiser, Jr. Walker's All-Star Band, Tommy Vale Revisiting the 60's & 70's, Mitch Rider & the Detroit Wheels and many others. Almost non-stop music throughout Summerr fest. Enjoy! 5. Meet “Paws” the Detroit Tigers Good Luck Charm and Mascot at the Elks Refreshment Tent 11am to 1pm., before the Grand Parade in Downtown Hastings. Bring the kids, bring the cameras, and meet and greet “Paws”. Thanks to Miller Real Estate for bringing him to town. 6. The line-up of Sporting Events during Summerfest includes the annual Jim Jensen Memorial 3 on 3 basketball tournament, Softball, 10K-5K Run, Fun Run, 3 on 3 Soccer Classic, Beach volleyball Tournament, Pinewood Derby and Weight Lifting. Sign up or get more information at www.hastingssummerfest.com. 7. The Summerfest Lucky Duck Race e is Saturday 3pm. next to the Splash Park. The Hastings Fire Department will float the ducks down the street from State to Apple. Tickets can be purchased at the Barry County Chamber of Commerce office in Downtown Hastings $5 each or 3/$10. 8. The annual Hastings Summerfest 2015 Car Show w will fill the streets of Downtown Hastings next Sunday from 10am-5pm. Featuring over 300 entries, a live DJ and more including Arts and Crafts, food vendors, trophies, dash plaques, and Best of Show awards to be awarded at 3pm. The Hastings Car Club also sponsors a Kids Parade down the center of the show at 12:30pm. The entry fee is $10 for all cars and the proceeds help support children's programs in Barry County. If motorcycles are more up your alley, check out the Motorcycle Show on Church Street from 11am.-5pm. I've heard only bikers know why a dog puts their head out the window so this may be the day to find the answer. 9. Kick off Summerfest Weekend with Playing at the Plaza this Thursday. The Children's Entertainmentt will be at noon featuring Tunes N Tales by Tricia. Educational and interactive, she performs with the audience along with Gladys the Guitar. The Teen Art Program will be at 2pm. and it's catch up day. If you have a project you didn't finish, bring it, or if you missed a week and would like to do that project, you can come and make it. The Evening Entertainmentt is Jen Sygit and Sam Corbin. This duo has been touring the Great Lakes playing “folk roots” music and include a variety of instrumentation. 10. While you are out and about this great Summerfest weekend, be sure to stop in The South Jefferson Street General Store. We are getting ready for fall with Hastings Hoodies and a little warmer scarves. We are ready for the football season to start with lots of things Michigan and Michigan State for your tailgating or party around the TV. We have had coloring books for the children, but now we have coloring books for adults. Peter Pauper Press prints them and they are quite intricate with 4 different books including a Christmas book.
