horal director Bob Oster may have retired from a 35-year teaching career, but he will never retire from music. Thirty years ago, Oster started the Lakewood Area Choral Society when he learned that adults still wanted to sing, some long after they left high school. Among the 122 voices that now make up the group, are (from left) Diane Haskin, a lifelong member, and Kevin Willison and Jack Vos, who answered the artistic call five years ago. Through their voices and the gifts of countless volunteers, the Lakewood Choral Society has earned recognition and kept alive the love of music for not only members, but also the audiences before which they appear. Look inside for a story of how the voices from small communities rose to become an inspirational call now being heard here and around the world.

1. The luck of the Irish strikes again. A large, enthusiastic crowd, great sunny weather, and a large number of entries made the 11th annual South Jefferson Street Parade a great time for all. If you missed it, you will hear about it from someone who was there and will want to make plans to attend next year's parade. A big thank you to Parade Master Ken Radant from WBCH Radio for organizing the festivities. Also, a very special thank you to the Reminder, the Hastings Banner and to WBCH for coverage of the parade, to the City of Hastings, the Hastings Police Department, the Barry County Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Retail Committee for their help and of course, a special thanks to the Merry Merchants of South Jefferson Street for sponsoring the parade. We also give a big thanks and appreciation to the participants who marched in the parade and to all of you who showed up to cheer us on during the “biggest little St. Patrick's Day Parade in Barry County”. We may not be the biggest, we are certainly not the longest, we don't have the big balloons, we are a little short on bands, but we are the most enthusiastic and have the most fun. B'gosh and Begorra, what a great holiday it was. 2. A big Thank You to everyone who came and made our Grand Opening a special day! We had a great morning with the Chamber of Commerce last week as we had our Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and yesterday was the final step with a day long celebration. The line for the hot dogs went to the end of the block much of the time so that kept Andy Hollenbeck busy. The drawings every hour were a hit, too. We gave away things from every department finishing with Melissa and Doug's George the Giraffe who is tall enough to look you in the eye. Thanks for everyone who came in and looked around. We hope you will remember us when you are needing a gift or just feel like shopping around. South Jefferson Street is a great place to be! 3. The Barry County Commission on Aging is looking for individuals, businesses, and groups a to donate a basket for the Meals on Wheels Gift Basket Silent Auction. Your participation will be much appreciated. The deadline for entry of your basket is April 6 and the auction starts with the Spaghetti Supper on April 10 and ends May 16 at the Meals on Wheels WalkaThon. It will be from 4:30-6:30p.m. and will include all the trimmings of a traditional Spaghetti Dinner along with the live, toe-tapping music of The Grumpy Old Men. Tickets are $6 in advance, $8 at the door, and children 4 and under are free. 4. Calling all Middle School and High School writers! The City of Hastings and the Thornapple Arts Council is conducting a story writing contest to include one of our downtown sculptures. They are asking middle and high school students to submit a story about the sculpture “The Gatherer”. This character leaves lots of room for you to be creative in your story including Hastings and the surrounding area. Stop by City Hall and see Maiya Merrick to pick up your entry and permission slips which are due April 30 and the winner will be announced May 18th. Get those creative juices flowing! This could be a step on to fame and fortune! 5. The sun is shinning & spring is here so if you have thoughts of adding apples, pears & peaches to your yard, you may want to go to the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute next week. Bill Shane of MSU will cover the basics of fruit trees, including siting, variety selection, pest control, and pruning. Participants will receive handouts with the information. Pre-registration is required with a deadline of March 25. The cost for members is $30 and for non-members is $37. 6. The time for bikers in Hastings has arrived! They are all over town checking out the roads and trails and stepping up their endurance so keep an eye out for them. March 28 is The Barry-Roubaix Bike Race, also known as the Killer Gravel Road Race, the largest gravel road race in the United States. Up to 3,500 bicyclists of all ages will be challenging themselves on the 23, 36, or 62 mile courses. Keep an eye out for The General Store Bike and rider, Kevin Dickinson. 7. The night before the Big Race is the best time to “Carb Up” and the Hastings Kiwanis Club will be all ready for you. Join in if you are a biker or if you just want to rub shoulders with the bikers or if you are just hungry for spaghetti. The Spaghetti Dinner takes place Friday, March 27th from 5-8p.m. at the Barry Community Enrichment Center, 231 S. Broadway. Tickets are purchased at the door $8 for adults and $5 for kids 5-12 with 5 and under free. 8. Join Free Spring Movies at the Hastings 4 Cinema. March 28 & 29 you can see “Rio 2” at 9a.m. and 10a.m. Saturday & Sunday. You can purchase a Build Your Kid Combo that includes popcorn, choice of soda, water or chocolate milk, and either candy or a granola bar. A big thank you to Hungry Howie's and Wendy's for helping sponsor the fun. 9. Hastings: What you always wanted your hometown to be. QUOTE: “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.” -Abraham Lincoln

Vote Yes May 5 th For Safe, Secure Entrances!
YES FOR HASTINGS! A secure entrance means that there would be a closed vestibule at each entrance. The doors into the school would be locked during operating hours and all visitors would enter through the office. The vestibule would have window or camera, an intercom and electric doors. Below is an example showing a secure entrance.
Passing of this bond will provide secure entrances at every building!

Much like Hastings, before the renovation, St. Johns’ visitors entered directly into the hallways.
After the renovation, visitors remain in the vestibule until they are let into the office, and then into the school.
