elen Altoft doesn’t need to fill her Hastings home with Christmas cookies every season to encourage her family to visit. Children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren do that anyway because of her heart that beats the rhythm of love all year round. One Saturday each December, though, even friends will join the Altoft family in baking, decorating and then storing more than 1,300 cookies for the official Altoft family Christmas gathering that usually tops out at more than 70 people in Altoft’s home. 1. Again this year, a very special highlight of the Christmas Season is scheduled for tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon as the Hastings Middle School and Hastings High School Bands and Choirs fill the Hastings High School Gym with the music of the season during the Christmas Collage Concerts, featuring nonstop music among the hundreds of poinsettias and thousands of Christmas lights. Over 400 students strong, the students will entertain with a selection of traditional and non-traditional Christmas songs. You should arrive early to get a good seat as the concerts are always sold out. Admission is free to all. Poinsettias will be sold as a fundraiser and you can order a CD of the concerts on Sunday. The Middle School concert is at 2 p.m. and the High School concert is at 4 p.m. Attend, enjoy the music and support the efforts of the very talented students in our community.

2. This year again, Dewey’s Auto Body presents their annual Christmas Light Show. The light and music show entertains from the side of their building at 1111 West Green Street in Hastings. You can park across the street and enjoy the show (turn your car radio to the station on the sign) from 5 to 8a.m. (enjoy the show on your way to work) or from 5:30 to11p.m. every night. The show is free to all thanks to Dewey’s.

3. The Lakewood Area Choral Society under the direction of Dr. Robert C. Oster, will present “Noel Festival: Songs of the Season” at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 315 W. Center St., Sunday December 14 at 3p.m. They will be singing many familiar favorites new and old of the season including the “Hallelujah Chorus” which will be great to hear in the church with its wonderful acoustics.

4. More Holiday Music to continue warming us all in the Spirit of Christmas is available. You are invited to a concert at the Dennison Performing Arts Center December 18 at 7p.m. The Thornapple Jazz Orchestra and the Hastings High School Jazz Band will be playing a collection of Holiday music that will be sure to get your toe tapping. The concert is free to all but a collection will be taken for the expenses of putting on the show.

5. The Pierce Cedar Creek Institute is hosting a Christmas Concert with Thornapple Brass Sunday, December 14 from 12:15 to 1p.m. Enjoy Christmas carols and other holiday favorites performed by Thornappple Brass. The group plays a variety of music, from baroque to jazz. Stop out for a little musical entertainment to get in the holiday spirit! The Christmas concert is free and open to the public.

6. Riding the Holly Trolley, one of the great Holiday Traditions in our community, returns this year for all to enjoy. “Jolly ole’ Bill Voigt: and his crew will offer rides through the “city of lights” bringing joy to all who participate. The Trolley picks up passengers between 5p.m. and 8p.m. each evening (except Sundays and the nights it travels to other towns). Pick up is from the north side of the Courthouse Square in Downtown and takes about a 15 minute ride through town, returning to the same location. Some nights Santa and his Singing Elves ride along, singing a song, other nights the trolley glides silently through town. The trolley rides are free and sponsored by local businesses. 7. Sunday (December 14th) Historic Charlton Park will celebrate the annual “Of Christmas Past” festivities from Noon until 5p.m. The events include mule drawn carriage rides, making traditional crafts and ornaments including hand dipped candles; hear Christmas Music at the Carlton Center Church, tour the village, enjoy fresh roasted chestnuts and wassail, shop the gift store for toys, games and keepsakes for everyone on your Christmas list. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children 4-12 or you can march the family onto the South Jefferson Christmas stage (the soap box) this week and sing us a couple of Christmas Carols and we will pay your way for the family to attend the “Of Christmas Past”.

8. If you have some shopping done by December 20 and are just too tired to wrap them up or you want to make a donation out of the job we have an idea for you. AlFresco is hosting a holiday wrapping party to benefit Barry County United Way and will be ready to wrap your gifts. Bring them your boxes and packages sealed and ready and they will get them ready for your tree. For more information call AlFresco at 945-5000. They are located at 215 S. Jefferson St. in the heart of downtown Hastings where Santa is waiting to help you get ready for the season.

9. Bluebird on the Moon and The Sugar Ribbon are sponsoring a special night for all the men out there who are still in need of Christmas gifts. The Wise Man's Night Out is December 17th from 5-8p.m. and these 2 stores will be ready to guide you in the right direction. Along with their help with ideas, they will give you a gift with your purchase and wrap your purchases for free. Sounds like a possibly difficult job made easy!

10. There is still time to help out with the Needy Feet boot drive. Many families are in need of boots for their children and this is a great way to clean out our closets of boots no one is wearing and help them at the same time. Your boots, or if you don't have boots and want to donate, can be dropped off or a check mailed to Dr. Mansky at 1127 W. State St. (between McDonald's and Big Boy) in Hastings. The boot drive will continue until December 23 so we have 10 days to fill up his office and help the children of our community keep warm.

11. Watch the Hastings Mystery Theater every Thursday and Friday at 7p.m. on the Hastings public access channel on the WOW cable system. Enjoy these black and white mystery movies from the 1930's and 1940's. See Charlie Chan, the Saint, Hildegarde Withers, Mr. Moto, Bulldog Drummond, the Lone Wolf and others bring the bad guys to justice.

12. WBCH Radio and Radio Shack in Hastings have again combined to sponsor “Christmas SOS-Stuff our Station” to collect a bunch of toys for the kids of Barry County who need help this holiday season. They want us to fill the station with toys. The station is open form 6a.m. until 5p.m. weekdays to accept your donation or you can drop a toy off at Radio Shack during their business hours. Toys are distributed by the Barry County United Way with their “Toys for Barry County Kids” where you can also make donations around the county. For more information call 269-945-4010.

WBCH Radio is again this year sponsoring the “One Grand Christmas” Shopper Sweepstakes drawing offering you a chance to win prizes daily and a grand prize of $1000 on December 23rd at 7:15a.m. You can enter at more than 100 merchants in Barry County including The General Store on South Jefferson Street.
