The Swartz Creek Hometown Parade is a huge event that brings out the exciting spirit of Small Town, USA. This year’s parade will be bigger and better than ever. Thousands will line the streets to see the Dragons Marching Band, along with Pom Squads, Cheerleaders, Dance Studios, Military Reps and more! Watch for the many floats coming down Miller Road! This year’s Grand Marshals will be the Kincaid Family. The Kincaid Family’s generosity over the years has, in large part, made the Festival possible. Thank you “Willie” and your family for all you do. Sharp Funeral Homes has over the many years sponsored the parade. Without their support and financial commitment, the parade would not be possible.

Wanda Cummings, along with the help of her husband Mike, are the two people responsible for making the parade possible. They handle all the logistics such as registration of participants, determining the line up, and keeping them all together and in a straight, consistent line. Keep it up Wanda and Mike! The Parade Announcers will again be Joel Feick from NBC 25 and Randy Swain from ABC 12. They do a great job and we’re proud to have them on board. Parade participants please note: The lineup will be at the High School and will proceed out of the Performing Arts driveway onto Miller Road. For any questions go to swartzcreekhometowndays.org or contact Wanda Cummings at (810) 635-7575

On Thursday, June 1st., from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, Swartz Creek Hometown Days is proud to host the “Andy Maybik, Jr. Special Day for Special Needs”. The focus of this event is to provide a fun-filled, stress-free day for people in our community with special needs. The Hometown Days organizers work endlessly to make sure everyone has access, feels included, and throughly enjoys the Festival. Festival organizers are aware that the special needs population requires certain accommodations in order to enjoy the activities that others take for granted. Imagine the feeling someone experiences when, for the first time, he or she is able to climb onto an

Arnold’s Amusements ride! All activities are FREE to our special guests and their caretakers. We also welcome school groups! The Special Day for Special Needs event is generously sponsored by Kroger and supported by Big Money Magazine. UAW Local 598 and the Swartz Creek Kiwanis will be sponsoring lunch for all participants and their caregivers. Other sponsors include Genesee Vending, Swartz Creek American Legion Post 294, Sons of the American Legion, The Legionnaires, and the American Legion for Women. If you would like to attend, please visit: swartzcreekhometowndays.org and click on the Special Needs tab. The link to register will be found on this page.

The event continues to grow year after year! Free Rides will not be the only excitement happening that day. There will also be Free: • Carnival games with Prizes • Snacks • Stilt Walker • Face Painting • Welde’s Bear Show • Photo Booth • Lunch • Dunk Tank • And More!

There are many wonderful sponsors who donate hard earned dollars, making the Swartz Creek Hometown Days Festival a huge success. However, there is one sponsor in particular that not only donates a generous amount of money, but also has a Volunteer Board of Directors. In talking to Laura Sorensen, Vice President of Marketing for SAGElink Credit Union, she said she remembers most of it but not all of the projects. Dating back to 2002, she recalls participating in the Expo Tent. Then later the Zoppé Family Circus. And for the last ten years she has worked with the Swartz Creek Idol Contest. Also there was the Dragon Storyteller, Parades (all of them), the Meijer Kid Zone Tent... the list goes on!

We wish there was more room to acknowledge all the sponsors. However SAGElink Credit Union is pretty special and we are so lucky to have them in our community. A big, big thank you goes out to those folks. Now moving on to the SAGElink Volunteers... There’s tents to clean, shows to get ready, and much more. Let’s get moving, this is going to be a huge, successful festival!

We’ve had an uneasy relationship with bears for thousands of years, and as always, humans appear to be winning the race to dominate the wilderness. Pollution and careless mismanagement of the environment means less bears in the wild, Their habitat is threatened by human encroachment. The Welde Family Bear Show will give you the opportunity to see these creatures up close. Bears have been part of the Welde Family since 1926, when Johnny Johnsen Welde of Norway began his love of bears and ran away to join the circus. His first bear act started in 1948 and debuted with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus for the

1947-1948 season. Currently the bears are part of Johnny D. Welde and his wife Monica’s family. When the bears are not on the road, they reside at “Bearadise Ranch”, a beautiful natural home where the bears can swim, climb trees, and just hang out as all bears like to do. The bears are treated with love and respect, and their training reflects that commitment. On the road, they are part of an educational presentation and exhibit. This project demonstrates the urgent need for habitat conservation and protection of bears of all kinds. You can experience the bear exhibit during the Special Day for Special Needs Event on Thursday at noon. Also on Friday at 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm, Saturday at 3:00, 5:00 and 7:00 pm, and on Sunday at 2:00 pm. and 4:00 pm. Stop by and say hello to the Welde Family and their bears. Then think about all the bears in the wild that are threatened by humans and the stress we put on the environment. Then ask yourself: What can I do to help?
