www.calhounprevention.org Join us as we recognize the fathers who were nominated from the community as Fathers who have shown their children what fathers stand for. These fathers come to us from all different backgrounds and lives, but all push for the best for their children and always put them first. We thank the members of the community for nominating such wonderful men to be part of our campaign and our council. Thank you fathers and thank you to our community. Fathers: Anthony Mead, Jacob Johnson, Matt Theil, Deven Cook Sr., Joe Thurston, Josh Ortiz, Brian Kinghorn, Mike Trumper, Chad Powell and Robert Demski. Mistress of Ceremonies: Kelley Parish of Haven of Rest Ministries and Auctioneer: Russ Claggett. Thank You Annual Supporters: Derek King of King Jewelers; Ron Osborne of Binder Park Golf Course; Ken and Paula Manley; “She Films and Photography and Videography,” Brittany Bauman and Laura Henderson. Real Men Sponsorships: Creek Valley Mobile Home Community; Elizabeth Wygant, Thirty One Independent Senior Consultant; Amy Chapman, Independent Consultant for Miche; Net Magik Pros Web Design; Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival; Jenny Brickley, Tastefully Simple Independent Consultant; Allen Harmon Insurance; Travis Powell and Family; In His Steps Dance Studio; Final Cut Lawn Care & Snow Removal.
Single father Jacob Johnson is praised in his nomination on his participation with his children and his activities to support fatherhood. He attends sessions with information to promote positive father involvement. Joscelyn Johnson, Jacob’s daughter, enjoys spending quality time with her father. Activities they both enjoy together are sledding, parks, reading, telling stories, swimming, shooting firearms (with air soft) dancing and practicing gymnastics. He has enrolled his daughter into tap and ballet and gymnastics. Barbies’ and dancing has taken over for this former United States Marine, but he wouldn’t change it for the world! Thank you Jacob for being a Real Man who Rocks! Sponsored By: Elizabeth Wygant, Thirty-one Independent Senior Consultant
Joe Thurston was nominated to us by his wife Heather. With their marriage combining families, Joe is the proud father of four: Dakota Thurston 13, Andrea Frizzle 10, Arizona Thurston 9, and Jessica Taylor 23. Joe is also a proud grandfather. Andrea was diagnosed with Pervasive Development Disorder which puts her on the autism spectrum, which was only the beginning of their journey as a family. Last year Andrea was diagnosed with Aspergers’ Syndrome. Through this tough time, Joe has stepped in and become Andrea’s father. He merged two families with children into one happy family. Spending time with his children bowling, watching movies, playing video games, going to sporting events just starts what he does. Joe works surveillance at Firekeepers Casino. Joe Thurston, your wife was right, you ROCK! Sponsored By: Jenny Brickley, Tastefully Simple Independent Consultant
Joshua Ortiz was nominated by Leah Clark. “He is the parent in the stands, or at the sidelines, cheering loudly. He motivates, encourages and pushes Taryn to be her best.” Taryn Ortiz is 12 years old and newborn son is Corbin. He loves being a father. “He is a face in our community as a juvenile probation officer for Calhoun County. Here he has the chance to take a fatherly affect on the youth who need this encouragement,” she wrote. With Josh’s position, he can set an example in the times when these children need it the most. Thank you Joshua Ortiz for being a Father who Rocks! A thank you to our Sponsor: Net Magic Pros Web Design www.NetMagkiPros.com
Earlie Braggs – Trombone/vocals
Terry Lower– Pianist/Composer
Meet Earlie ~ Many people know Earlie Braggs as a charismatic person who helps people find music for many occasions. He is best known, however, as a jazz trombonist, bass player and vocalist. Earlie Braggs is an experienced jazz professional with extensive training contributing to his professional performance career. He has performed throughout the United States dating back to 1975. Some of these performances have been with music ensembles backing some of the worlds’ most renowned jazz artists and entertainers including trumpeters Cat Anderson and Clark Terry, clarinetist Henry Questa, jazz violinist Claude “Fiddler” Williams, 'Master of the Sax' Richie Cole, jazz pianist Jay “Hootie” McShann, Della Reese, Nancy Wilson, Steve Allen, Cab Calloway, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and the New York Voices. From 1997 through 1999 he went on several jazz tours with the Illinois Jacquet Big Band to Europe (France, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Belgium), and the U.S.- Kansas City (Kansas City Jazz Festival), Chicago (Chicago Jazz Festival) and New York's famous Lincoln Center.
After studying at Berklee School of Music in Boston, Terry returned to Michigan and for over 30 years has been active on the Jazz scene in the USA and abroad performing and/or recording with many Jazz greats including Frank Morgan, David “Fathead” Newman, Larry Nozero, Hendrik Meurkins, Kevin Mahogany and Benny Golson to name a few. Terry has appeared with the Grand Rapids, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo and West Michigan Symphony Orchestras including performances with Eddie Daniels, Jennifer Holiday and Bernadette Peters, the Jimmy Dorsey and Nelson Riddle Orchestras and on Carnival and Costa Cruise Lines. Among his many Jazz Festival performances, Terry’s Trio and Septet perform regularly at the Michigan Jazz Festival and have appeared at the renowned Detroit/Montreux International Jazz Festival. In Europe, Terry toured Italy as part of the “Centro Jazz Torino” concert tour in 2006 with vocalist/Grammy nominee Betty Joplin and again in 2008 with vocalist Edye Evans Hyde . Also a prolific writer, many of Terry’s original compositions have been published and recorded on numerous CD’s including his own Septet’s (2005) “Step By Step” and his Piano Trio’s 2009 release, “4 Trios.”
Anthony Mead is nominated by his wife Megan Mead, CAN Council director. This Real Men Rock campaign was inspired by Anthony and step daughter. Tony is the proud father of 6 year old Allaynna. Tony has spent the previous 5 years raising Allaynna pretty much on his own. Tony has done an amazing job raising Allaynna into a beautiful, talented, confident, young lady. Coming in as a step mother to their duo, never once did he allow Megan to just parent while he had a “free ride.” He is always her first parent. Tony has made an amazing life for both Allaynna and Megan. Tony spends his days working at a gravel pit in Nashville, which is where he enjoys “playing with Tonka Trucks” as he always says. But now, everyone knows why Allyanna loves the dirt. Very rarely does Allaynna like to play with toys, she wants her “Superdaddy.” She couldn’t be any happier with any toy. I am proud to have Anthony Mead as a dad who ROCKS!! Sponsored by: Creek Valley Mobile Home Community
Brian Kinghorn was nominated by Community Action’s Brian Fourn. Brian supports fatherhood for his children by seeking information and attending activities and classes. Brian enjoys spending time at his daughter’s school in the classroom. Brian still continues to seek ways to be a better father and support fatherhood. Brian is the proud father of Elizabeth 4, Michael 3, and Daniel 22 months! As a science educator, Brian knows how to have fun. Dance parties in the living room, reading stories, prayer and Bible stories at bedtime, roughhousing (trampoline or horse,) playing pirates, swimming and playing at the beach, exploring new places together and much more! Brian is the oldest of 8 children which helped prepare him for fatherhood. He is currently finishing a doctorate in educational psych at Michigan State University and is currently teaching at Miller College. He enjoys traveling and doing photography. Brian Kinghorn, you are a dad that ROCKS! Sponsored By: Allen Harmon Insurance
Chad Powell was nominated by another one of our fathers, and his cousin and best friend, Anthony Mead. Chad and his wife, Heather, share the “yours,” “mine,” and “ours” at home, but the way Chad fathers all of them, you would never know the difference. There are six daughters: Shelby 16, Hannah 14, Ashton 12, Madison 11, Cambria 10, and Kaitlyn 9. Chad spends most of his free time with his daughters. Chad works for his family business as a truck driver, so often he is on long hauls. During breaks, he takes opportunities for close-tohome runs so the girls can go with him. Riding in the semi is one of the best times they share together. Chad is a dance dad, a girls-onthe-run dad, a soccer dad, a dad who is there, a dad who supports what ever they want to try next! Chad is a huge U of M fan and also enjoys being outside. Chad and his girls spend most of their summer out at the lake just being around each other. Thanks Chad for being an amazing father that ROCKS!! Sponsored By: Travis Powell
Deven R. Cook Sr. was nominated to us by Tobi Sisman, who described Deven as involved and positive! Deven is the proud father of four children: Elizabeth, 21, Gabrielle, 18, Deven Jr., 14 and Abigail Grace, 18 months. Deven currently works at the Department of Veteran Affairs. With his children by his side, he pilots the a hot air balloon, “Winds of Freedom.” He was a chaser and crew for many years and now he does this with his children. Besides ballooning, they enjoy hunting and fishing, camping, and everything outdoors, and movie nights as a family. Deven is an Air Force Veteran and volunteers in the community. He sits on the Board for the Salvation Army and volunteers at Prairieview Elementary where his wife, Lindsey, works. Thanks Deven for being a Dad that Rocks! Sponsored By: Amy Chapman, Independent Consultant for Miche
Matt Theil, a single father of two boys was nominated by his sister Rebecca Schwarz. Some of Matt’s qualities in being father of Mason 3 and Jacob 6 Rebecca mentioned was his love for nature, growing a garden in the summer and how to eat healthy. Matt works in construction, and has passed on some of these traits to his boys as in fixing things around the house and their toys. Rebecca is a proud sister watching her brother raise Mason and Jacob on his own and never asking for help. He and his boys live in the country and enjoying being on electric bikes and the quad. As the boys grow older art will be a new adventure that they encounter as a family. Thanks Matt for being a Dad that Rocks!!! Sponsored By: Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival
Mike Trumper was nominated by his wife, Jessica Trumper who called him an “amazing” father to their three children: Bryce 10, Elleigh 6, and Ava 4. In the 10 years of their marriage, Mike and Jessica at first weren’t too sure what to do. Mike willingly went to different parenting classes to seek out what was best for his children. Mike has made it possible so Jessica can stay home and raise the children, operates his own small business. “He is the king of piggy back rides and cannon balls in the pool, scoops all three up for bedtime and a story to go along, has a tender heart and tears with proud moments,” says Jessica. Mike enjoys spending time sledding, movie nights, story time, kick ball, going to the park, dinner time, snowball fights, camping and swimming at the lake, and playing dress up with his children. Mike knows the importance of a father in his children’s life since he did not have that option. He says “My Wife Rocks!” Thanks Mike for being a Dad that ROCKS! Sponsored By: In His Steps Dance Studio
Robert Demski was nominated by his daughter Leah Clark as a remarkable father. Robert is the father of three, Elizabeth Krieg 47, Rob Demski 45, and Leah 30. “Without his encouragement I wouldn’t have succeeded to my master’s degree” said Leah. As the medical examiner for Calhoun County, time off is not an option, but Robert took a day off to be at Fort Leonardwood to see her graduate. From there on out, his days off are focused on his daughter. He is always there, he is an honest straight forward, and hard working man who has passed those traits on to his children. Robert enjoys life and being at family activities. He enjoys restoring old homes, going to car shows with his classic cars. Grandparenting is now one of his activities as well! Thanks Robert Demski for being a Dad that Rocks! Sponsored By: Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival
