“I was training for a half marathon with my daughter when my knee pain became unbearable. I went to see an orthopedic specialist at Bronson Battle Creek. X-rays revealed my knee cartilage was completely gone. I’m young for a knee replacement, but there was no other option. I’m a mother of six. Life is hectic. I’m always looking after everyone. Now I was the one being looked after. The nurses are so dedicated. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed such peace and quiet. Although Joint Camp was tough, I had the support I needed to flourish. My doctor told me that when he saw the damage to my knee during surgery he couldn’t believe how long I put up with it. I just hope others experiencing this severe level of pain realize they can get help, too.” Stephanie, Three Rivers, Michigan
If you have knee pain, you have options. Learn more about knee replacement surgery at bronsonpositivity.com/knee.

HARPER CREEK SCHOOLS
MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
MISSION & VISION STATEMENT The mission of Harper Creek Community Schools, the cornerstone of our community, honoring the past, excelling in the present, and focusing on the future, is to ensure that each student achieves optimal academic growth and is a responsible citizen of our global society, through a system characterized by: A rigorous, relevant curriculum; A meaningful instructional delivery system; A highly effective, caring, and enthusiastic staff; A physically and emotionally secure environment; and The active participation of our families and community.
SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS Vikki Bauer, President Beau Bess, Vice President Barry Smith, Treasurer Gary Lincoln, Secretary Tina Kyger, Trustee Don Myers, Trustee Tim Martin, Trustee
Harper Creek Community Schools is honored to be the Cornerstone of the Community. Harper Creek does not have a city center, a town square, or even a town. The school is the center of activity for our community, and we embrace that role. From kindergarten through high school, our community takes pride in our schools and champions the success of our students. Cutting edge K-4 instruction is the key to success at our elementary schools. Treating all children as individuals, coupled with differentiated instruction and extensive support programs, ensures that students receive the assistance they need to be successful. Students receive added support in core subject areas based on real-time data, and enrichment opportunities engage students who excel to maximize their ability to succeed. Middle school is a transition time for students, and Harper Creek Middle School educates with this in mind. Physical, emotional, and social development varies greatly, therefore, we are committed to providing students a safe environment to grow, develop, and try new things. Preparing students for high school and exploring career pathways is a strategic mission of the middle school. Harper Creek High School students are encouraged to be involved in activities which foster lifelong skills in preparation for adulthood. Research shows that students who are active in school clubs, extracurricular activities, or athletics perform better academically than students who do not participate. Our goal is to have all high school students involved in one or more activities. Involving parents and community members in these activities further improves student success. Community members also have an opportunity to be our partners in education through philanthropy. The Harper Creek Community Educational Foundation (HCCEF) is a non-profit organization affiliated with the Battle Creek Community Foundation that oversees endowed funds for scholarships and grant programming. Currently there are fourteen scholarship funds that annually award scholarships to deserving seniors. There are also two funds that support special projects within the school. The HCCEF is in the process of increasing current fund levels and expanding the number of funds. More information on starting an endowed fund may be found at the Battle Creek Community Foundation website (http://www.bccfoundation.org/). We encourage parents and community members to be active partners in educating our youth through philanthropy and volunteerism. Contact a building principal to discover the many opportunities for involvement; volunteering in an elementary classroom, being part of a parent/teacher organization, joining a booster club, or supporting our students at extracurricular events. We understand that it takes a village to raise a child, and Harper Creek Community Schools will always welcome parents and community members to be our partners in education. Pesticides Act Public Act 131 of 1993 requires schools to notify parents and guardians of children attending school of their right to be informed prior to application of pesticide at that school. Harper Creek Community Schools has no formal regular schedule for pesticide applications. Any use of pesticides is determined on an “as needed basis. If you wish to be notified personally prior to the application of any pesticides at a school building at which your child is attending, please register with the Administration Office by phone (269) 4416550 or by letter: Harper Creek Facilities Department, 7454 B Drive North, Battle Creek, MI 49014. When you write or call, please indicate your full name and phone number(s) where you may be reached, as well as an address for written notification. A Budding Artist!
John Ruemenapp
Culinary Corner It is hard to believe that another summer has gone by and a new school year is about to begin. I would like to introduce myself. My name is John Ruemenapp, Director of Dining Services at Harper Creek Community Schools. I come to Harper Creek as a graduate of Johnson and Wales University with a Culinary Arts Degree and over 13 years of experience in school foodservice dining. I’ve only been at Harper Creek for a few short weeks, but I’m very excited to be able to bring my talents, and the talent of my staff, to you and our students. We have a few new programs coming this school year. First is a program called Nutrislice. It is a program that allows you to view school lunch menus, nutritional information, and some of the major allergens involved. To access Nutrislice, go to www.harpercreek.net and click on Food Service (under the Departments tab). Click on the Red Apple to gain access to the Nutrislice program. All you will need to do is locate your child’s school, and from the drop down window, the menus will appear. Secondly, we will be launching an option for you to pay for your child’s lunch account online through www. sendmoneytoschool.com. Please continue to make deposits as in the past until this program goes into effect. The Food Service Department is very excited about both of these new programs. To make deposits in your elementary child’s account, students may give their lunch money to their teacher. Please make sure you provide the child’s first and last name with their deposit to ensure the money is deposited to the correct account. 2015–16 School Breakfast and Lunch Prices Elementary Breakfast.............. $1.15 Elementary Lunch .................. $1.85 Middle School Breakfast ........ $1.40 Middle School Lunch ............. $2.00 High School Breakfast ............ $1.40 High School Lunch ................ $2.00 Premium Lunches .................. $2.70
Anti-Harrassment and Bullying The Harper Creek Board of Education will vigorously enforce its prohibition against discriminatory harassment based on race, color, national origin, sex (including sexual orientation and transgender identity), disability, age (except as authorized by law), religion height, weight, marital or family status, military status, ancestry, or genetic information (collectively, “Protected Classes) that are protected by Federal civil rights laws and encourages those within the School District community as well as third parties, who feel aggrieved to seek assistance to rectify such problems. The Board will investigate all allegations of unlawful harassment and in those cases where unlawful harassment is substantiated, the Board will take immediate steps to end the harassment, prevent its recurrence, and remedy its effects. Individuals who are found to have engaged in unlawful harassment will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action. For more information regarding these policies visit our website at www.harpercreek.net.
