Please allow me to take this opportunity to introduce myself to all of you. My name is Rob Ridgeway, your new superintendent at Harper Creek Community Schools. I have been in education for 24 years, serving as a mathematics teacher, recreation director, athletic director, and most recently, eight years as superintendent for Homer Community Schools. I have been married to my wife Lisa for 21 years and have two sons, Brock and Tyler. My first month on the job was exciting as I was able to meet many people within the Harper Creek community. I have been impressed with the pride that students, parents, and the community at large have for their school district. You have much to be proud of here at Harper Creek with a rich tradition of excellence in academics, extracurricular activities, and athletic activities. As I embark on this new venture, I would like to take the time to get to know all of you. When you see me within the schools, at events, or out and about in the community, please introduce yourself and feel free to give me your input on Harper Creek Community Schools. I intend to be the first learner with the district, meaning I will listen and research before making decisions. Your feedback is important to the success of our school district. Photo courtesy of Battle Creek Enquirer (Nick Garrison) During my time as an educator I have learned many lessons. Number one among those is that schools exist for children. Our purpose is to ensure that the youth of our community are nurtured, inspired, involved, and educated into active participants of our society. Our children are the future and our most important resource. With that in mind, all decisions we make within the Harper Creek Community Schools must be made through the lens of students first. Yours for Academic Excellence, ROB RIDGEWAY, Superintendent Follow me on Twitter: @Rob_Ridgeway

)-( && $ $ ) ) '& ' ' ! %%" ' ', Written by Samantha Roslund It’s been an exciting year here at the Harper Creek High School Library. We’re working hard and starting a lot of new programs and projects to enhance the services we provide. Our aim is to make the library more accessible, helpful, and valuable to the students, faculty, and staff at Harper Creek. We’ve been featuring themes every month to advertise and promote the different books and resources available to students. In September, we celebrated banned books by hosting a “Banned Book Month. We gathered together books that have been contested throughout history and put them on display. Students had fun learning that several of the texts they read in English had been, at one time, banned, burned, or bootlegged for being too controversial during that time period. In February, we created a “Blind Date with a Book display that encouraged students to check out books without knowing the title or author. It was one of our most popular displays because books were wrapped in wrapping paper and labeled with a short, attention-grabbing description. Students were encouraged to wait until they got home to unwrap them and start reading. Quite possibly our biggest project this year has been cleaning up the collection and organizing a huge book sale. Throughout the first semester, library aides worked tirelessly to “weed the library—collecting and pulling worn, unused, or out-of-date books from the shelves and deleting

However, the freshmen boys have grown accustomed to unbeaten records and near perfection. With this being the freshmen’s first year playing at the high school level, many felt very accomplished with their 9-0 football season and their 18-2 basketball season. The boys agreed that in high school, the practices grew harder and the discipline became more intense—many

The entire community is invited to come to the sale and purchase paperback books for $1 and hardcovers for $2. We’ll be holding sales after school and on Saturday, May 30. We’re excited that 100% of the proceeds will be spent on purchasing and installing a new computer lab in the library. Students at Harper Creek will use the lab to gain more experience with computers and technology. From the successes of the sale, the community will be supporting student exposure to 21st Century skills and competencies that will add to their becoming successful, contributing adults. Written by Cristi Eyre The Middle School PTO has been resurrected with huge success! They have sponsored a variety of activities—McTeacher Nights, 5/6 Activity Night, and many other projects throughout the school year. In working with funds raised through the school-wide fundraiser, the group is supporting varied requests from teachers. Parent volunteers provided food for our teachers during their long evenings of parent/teacher conferences. We cannot thank our parents enough for their endless support of activities and ideas.

Written by Cristi Eyre After serving Harper Creek Middle School students and families for ten years, this has been a year of reflection for me. When I look back at the changes we have faced during that time, I am continually amazed at the speed at which we continue to move forward and experience new and exciting things. Ten years ago, we brought all Harper Creek 5th and 6th graders “up to the newly formed Harper Creek Middle School and spent a year of transitioning students, staff, and families into their new culture. The 7th and 8th graders continued to attend school in their home, Harper Creek Junior High School, while the remainder of the former High School site was renovated. Time was spent during first few years learning and growing as a staff, body of students, and community—establishing the fact that 5th through 8th graders could co-exist peacefully in the same domain. After three years, I moved from serving as Vice Principal into the position of Principal. The past seven years have been some of the most rewarding and challenging I have faced as an educator. Our culture has evolved into an environment where 5th through 8th graders are accepted as one entity—and everyone functions quite well together. We have added programs and expanded activities with unbelievable speed. Academically, we have implemented the completion of the World Language Experience graduation requirement. Over 90 percent of our students are successfully completing this requirement. In addition, students’ progress through Spanish is monitored and communicated through standards-based report cards, indicating their progress toward mastery. We added Advanced Math for 7th graders and Algebra I for 8th graders who Reflections continued on page 2 games of the season, before taking on Marshall and St. Joseph. “I do believe we will go undefeated all year but our last two games against Marshall and St. Joe are going to be tough, said freshman Dane Johnson. “Even if we lose one game, we will prove to people that you should care about freshmen sports because we all play for Harper Creek. Unfortunately, the boys lost the last two games of the season by a combined total of 3 points. When all was said and done and the final whistle blown, the freshmen capped off an impressive first year of high school sports.

" ! $ ! ! ! ! Written by Kristy Newman Beadle Lake Elementary hosted this year’s first Countdown to Kindergarten event on March 11. Countdown to Kindergarten is a unique program in which next year’s incoming kindergartners have the opportunity to meet their teachers, see the classrooms, and explore the building. They even ride the school bus! Countdown to Kindergarten is a series of three family events. During the first evening, the children go on a scavenger hunt throughout the building. During the second workshop, the children do fun learning activities in the classrooms with the teachers while the parents learn from principal Kristy Newman about curricula and all of the programs Beadle Lake has to offer. During the final meeting, the children ride the school bus and spend time playing in the gym and on the playground—all while parents meet the school secretary and school nurse and walk through the registration process. Countdown to Kindergarten is a fantastic way for incoming children and families to get to know Beadle Lake so they can spend the summer feeling comfortable and excited about starting school in the fall. If you, or anyone you know, has a child starting kindergarten at Beadle Lake Elementary next year, please join us on April 15 and May 13 from 6 to 7pm! Reflections, from page 1 demonstrate a higher level of mastery in mathematical skills. Even though schools have faced tough financial times and increasing academic requirements for graduation, we have managed to provide our students a well-rounded academic experience through physical education, music, art, and technology. One special point of pride we celebrate is the number of students committed to Harper Creek performing arts through participation in band and choir. Finally, we have a multitude of opportunities available to students to become involved in activities outside of traditional school hours. Athletically, our students may participate in cross country, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, swimming, tennis, track, and lacrosse. We have added Girls on the Run activities involving 5th grade girls. There is so much interest (and success!) in our Robotics program, we have been challenged to provide enough support for all those interested. We sponsor Student Council for all grade levels, as well as National Junior Honor Society for 7th graders (second semester) and 8th graders. We have students serving as peer mentors, peer partners, or peer tutors throughout the building in various capacities. We recently held a dance for 7th and 8th graders and an activity night for 5th and 6th graders— both events were huge successes. Furthermore, we take pride in instilling a sense of community service and teaching our students the importance of giving back. We have supported the American Heart Association, Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Foundation, National Foundation for Juvenile Diabetes, Calhoun County Humane Society, Inasmuch House, and Haven of Rest, as well as local families in need through clothing and food drives. None of these middle school opportunities would be possible without the collaboration and commitment of parents, teachers, staff members, community members, students, and even grandparents! Raising our children and providing valuable experiences truly does involve the efforts of an entire village. And for the support received, we are grateful.

Written by Kristy Newman Beadle Lake Elementary is having fun and getting healthy with the help of a few local grants. One such grant is the “Shaping Positive Lifestyles and Attitudes through School Health Grant (or SPLASH). This project has given Beadle Lake students the opportunity to learn about nutrition and physical activity. The primary objective of the program is to improve the likelihood that children and families will learn how to make healthy food choices within a limited budget and choose physically active lifestyles consistent with the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the USDA food guidance, MyPlate. Through SPLASH, Beadle Lake students participate in weekly lessons to learn about healthy foods. A tasty snack is part of each lesson to introduce the children to new fruits and vegetables. They also enjoy getting up and moving with the physical activity component. Teachers have the opportunity to be trained in the Michigan Model for Health curriculum so that the healthy ideals introduced through SPLASH will continue in subsequent years. Beadle Lake will be also be participating in the Get Fit Mileage Club, sponsored by Bronson Battle Creek. This project provides incentives for children to increase physical activity by walking or running each day. Prizes for participating include tee shirts, water bottles, and an opportunity to win a new bicycle. Later this spring, families will be invited to a “Bee a Healthy Family event, in which parents will learn how to prepare healthy meals, and children will learn how to make healthy and fun snacks. They will receive a bag of groceries and some recipes to get started. The family event will be funded in conjunction with the SPLASH program and Bronson of Battle Creek’s Get Fit Mileage Club Program.

Written by Cyndi Mead It may have been freezing cold outside this winter, but Sonoma students have kept warm and cozy in their igloo. The structure was created from approximately 500 milk jugs fashioned together with the use of a hot glue gun. Spending time in the igloo has helped students have a sense of how Eskimos live, but without the chilly temperatures. Staff and students have enjoyed using the igloo for various math activities, including measurement, counting, and estimation. It has also been a popular gathering place for small group lessons in other curricular areas. It is large enough inside to accommodate quite a few people, so a teacher can easily instruct a small group of 5-8 students inside, depending on the age of the children. The milk jugs create a significant sound barrier, which also minimizes distractions. It is a quiet and comfortable place to bring writing journals and has become a favorite spot in the school to read and share stories, as well as a perfect gathering place for shared grade level activities. The igloo was the brainchild of teacher Emily Kane, who had gotten the idea from a friend. She and fellow kindergarten teachers put out a request for donations of milk jugs—

collecting jugs from their kindergarten families, as well as staff and students throughout the school. To expedite the process, donations were also solicited and collected from several local agencies, including Prairie Farms (providing 300+ milk jugs) and Starbucks (providing 100+ milk jugs). Battle Creek Tile & Mosaic Company also graciously donated carpet to be installed inside the igloo once the structure was complete, making it extra cozy! Sonoma Elementary is very appreciative of the many donations, as well as the many hours of assembling by Emily, Adam, and Blake Kane. Appreciation also goes to Tom Milhoan for providing the carpet, along with Joan Milhoan and Elysha King for installing it. Students and staff alike are enjoying the igloo.

Sonoma Magic Written by Cyndi Mead Abracadabra‌‌(POOF!!)‌magically excited 3rd graders appear at the American Museum of Magic in Marshall! The process began with Sonoma Musart (a blend of music and art) teacher Betty Picard applying for and being granted a BCreative Grant through Miller College. The goal was for students to gain insight into the way illustrators use color and contrast to create excitement in their work—the same way magicians create the element of surprise. The students used vintage posters advertising magic shows as their primary source as they studied visual illustration. They delved into advertisements in which they studied and analyzed color relationships. As a music connection, they listened to Haydn’s “Surprise Symphonyâ€? as a springboard to wondering and creating a visual representation of the movement through a listening map. They looked at the work of Wassily Kandinsky “Circlesâ€? and practiced illustrating their own shapes—comparing how the colors seemed brighter, duller, and evoked a feeling. To tie in with the medium of magic posters, the students also watched a YouTube video of a magic show. The students took note of how the magician surprised them and then discussed how artists and musicians do the same in their appropriate mediums. Then the big day came to visit the American Museum of Magic. During their visit, the students saw actual advertisement posters for magic shows, as well as a live

magic show—all helping to them to create a poster depicting themselves as the magician doing a specific magic act. The final pieces were then sent to the Magic Museum. Two posters were picked to be framed and hung at the Museum. This aesthetic education experience culminated in the American Magic Museum staff visiting the 3rd graders back at Sonoma where they acknowledged the process and work the students put into this assignment. Third graders Rachel Kyger and Daphne Garner were awarded the honor of having their posters chosen for framing and display at the museum. Each student left feeling like a winner as all of the students were presented with a final magic show in which they learned several tricks to try on their own. The best and final lesson learned was that, although things may seem magical, there is always a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes.

! # % !" !' ! !! ! % Written by Kim Thayer Wattles Park Elementary has an intervention/extension block during the school day that is designed to meet each student where they are academically—and help move them higher. This period is called WIN Time (What I Need Time). Each grade level has a 45-50 minute block each day in which students are grouped according to individual need across every grade level. Each grade level teacher and a group of intervention specialists work with different groups on reading, writing, or math. During this time, all children at the grade level work to improve their understanding of the curriculum at their own level. WIN Time is specifically designed to be flexible, which allows staff the opportunity to assist all students based on their particular needs. During WIN Time, no new teaching or instruction takes place in the classrooms, thus assuring that students receiving intervention services do not fall further behind. This intervention configuration has proven results, not only with struggling students, but with students who excel. Students who do not need academic remediation are in extension groups that apply learned skills by different methods.

!! ! % # Written by Kim Thayer At Wattles Park Elementary, staff and students are committed to service learning, and that learning takes many forms. We participate in many projects throughout the year. Some of our service learning is projectbased learning. This past winter, Wattles Park art teacher Bene Johnson, in connection with M&M Fisher Foundation Service Learning, wrote a grant to fund a service learning project in her art classroom. Mrs. Johnson’s idea was to complete a service learning project on recycling. She developed lessons for her Kindergarten through 4th grade students on recycling paper and crayons. The students collaborated together and decided to create recycled new crayons from broken crayons in our building and from home. All grade levels made crayons, and the crayons were sold to students and staff at Wattles Park Elementary. The students raised $230. This money was used to purchase gift certificates to a local movie theater that were donated to Inasmuch House, a local homeless shelter for families. The students presented the gift certificates to Inasmuch House director, Rose Miller, providing homeless

children a bit of fun over their holiday break. Students participate in a walking program called W.O.W. (Wattles Outstanding Walkers), facilitated by lunch/recess aides and lead by Chris Beaver. In order to develop a sense of citizenship, many of the walks incorporate a donation drive. Over the school year, students and staff have collected hats, scarves, and books for the Charitable Union and food for the local food pantry. One of our largest service learning projects is Jump Rope For Heart. Year after year, physical education teacher Paul Cotts coordinates a hugely successful event. The students share with each other the effects that heart disease has had on their families, and they take this fundraiser to “heart. This year, our students and their families topped their own record by collecting over $11,000 for The American Heart Association. At Wattles Park Elementary, we work very hard to encourage and reinforce positive character virtues. Service learning helps develop responsibility and citizenship, and provides students with positive community connection experiences.
