CALDER MUSEUM

Size: 83,000 sq. ft. Use: Art Gallery & Coffee House The objective of the project is to create an exhibition space for Alexander Calder’s sculptures, stabiles, and hanging mobiles. The design is influenced by the theory of deconstruction to manipulate skin creating a non-rectilinear shape distorting the form creating controlled chaos. The localized nature of the atrium is the synthesis of the three imperfect structures centered on abstract geometries. Divided into three hierarchal spaces connected by an atrium provides an intimate opportunity for patrons to gather.

MONDRIAN MUSEUM

Size: 7,500 sq. ft. Use: Art gallery used to display Mondrian’s work The goal for this project is to design an art gallery using pure abstraction and reduced forms by simplyfing visual compositions into vertical and horizontal directions. The overall shape is a combination of three volumes and shifting planes to create a centralized space. The intersecting planes and volume form a perimeter for circulation around the installations. The circulation space provides an opportunity for gallery viewers to discuss and reflect on the pieces. The elevated ceilings and walls allow more light to illuminate the rooms indirectly by reflecting the phosphorescents off the brise soleils.

Castle Rock Arts & Ecology Center 1550 Castle Rock Road, Walnut Creek, CA

Size: 27,500 sq. ft. Use: Art Exhibit & Ecological Education Located on the hillside on the outskirts of the suburban city, Walnut Creek. With a view extending outward to the Mount Diablo Valley Regional Park. Designed around the preservation of water, the curved rooves collect and store H20 underground. The angular planes mimic the earthy mounds surrounding the site to provide a synthesized experience between man and nature.

Oakland Repertory Theatre 1911 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland CA

Public Transportation Map

Tasked to design a Repertory Theatre seating 600 for the emerging uptown district of Downtown Oakland. The engine block of the design is loosely based on the Berkeley Theatre, which also houses about 600. The initial concept was to create another world for the audience to submerge themselves in. Starting with a rectangular skin we manipulated the shape by using a subtraction method creating voids in a manner that would separate the public and the private sectors.
