elect CITYWALK is reflective of the fact that International Women’s Day isn’t just about giving a flower to a woman you appreciate. The day, March 8, is a symbol of fierce struggles of women for their own equality and rights and also a reminder of how far there is still to go. A UN report found that one in three women is a victim of sexual or physical violence and a majority of rapes are either never reported, or the rapist gets off with little to no punishment. They also found that 70 per cent of the poor are women and that women own about one per cent of the world’s titled land. That’s why for Select CITYWALK, Women’s Day was not merely a

Jaya couldn’t help but admire how beautifully Select CITYWALK presented Women’s Day theme through paintings. She was awe-struck by the art-work of these young painters from Artist At Work (AAW), who showcased gender equality through their prolific artworks. Talking about the self-defense initiative taken by Select CITYWALK, she said, “It’s a commendable work that they have done, and I learnt some interesting techniques on self-defense by attending Shifu Kanishka Sharma’s workshop.” — Jaya, Lawyer

/Campaign Women’s day day to celebrate womanhood, but also a day that makes us think on how we can make this world a better place for the fairer sex. And keeping this theme in mind, Select CITYWALK thought of something absolutely upbeat that could probably bring the winds of change. Select CITYWALK came up with the idea of showcasing a bouquet of events to celebrate Women’s Day that also included a very helpful workshop on ‘Urban Street Survival’ tactics. The self defense workshop punctuated with mesmerising musical performances and thought-provoking street plays celebrated the spirit

When quizzed about the importance of self-defense for women, Aditya replied that it is very important as the situation today is such that women can’t step out alone at night and sometimes even during the day. “It’s all about how children are being brought up. They should be taught to respect women,” he said. — Aditya, Student

of womanhood at Select CITYWALK. The workshop began with live painting by Artists At Work. Depicting the theme of gender equality, these talented painters showcased their skills adroitly on the canvas and most importantly gave a message. Kunal, a student of Dayal Singh College, belted out some beautiful songs. The young lad feels that the plight of women today is a point of major concern for everyone and performers like him can try to invigorate the minds. Then came a bunch of power-packed girls, from IP University (Abhivyakti group) to present their street-play on gender inequality. Clad in green kurta and black pyjamas, these girls nailed it with their expression, which indeed showed how deeply they felt for the cause. There was a session by Safe Women Foundation on how women should take care of themselves on the street. And then the three guests of honour, Shifu Kanishka Sharma, actress Neetu Chandra and chief guest Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje talked about women’s safety and importance of learning self-defense. Neetu Chandra, who looked stunning, came with her mother to the event. The actress says she owes it to her mother for motivating her to join martial arts. Talking about martial arts, she shared the misconception that parents have and the reason why they don’t let their daughters get into this. “A lot of parents think that martial arts can make their daughter’s

When asked about the meaning of Women’s Day, Manvi replied that for her everyday is Women’s Day and it’s basically a day that reminds you of God’s most beautiful creation on earth. Talking about how difficult things have become for girls to move out alone, Manvi shared her personal experience of eve-teasing, wherein she mentioned that even the rich and the educated men tease women. — Manvi, Student

hands very harsh and rough, and that is why they don’t let them learn it, but that’s a wrong view, I think it will help her learn a lot more, I completely endorse this show, martial arts develop perseverance and I am here because of it,” she said. Kanishka Sharma showed some simple techniques through which women can safeguard themselves. He mentioned about opportunity weapons like ball pen, mobile phones, which girls usually carry and how they can defend themselves by using these weapons. After a bit of training, the shoppers had a glimpse of fairytale romance, when Lady Shri Ram College girls danced like a dream on ‘I Wish Cinderella’. The story that started as a fairytale romance, however, had a strong message for all women. And that was not all, students from Barry John’s acting school concluded the show with their stupendous street play.

Sun-kissed

fancies

Layerings get edgier, prints checkered, fabric goes lacy, silhouettes boxy - this spring/summer is classic and chic! Here is a lowdown on four fashion favourites of this season

Slinky slips Indulge your summer-loving, pastelsporting side with that closest staple of the 90s - the slinky and about to slip off the shoulder slip dresses. This neo-90s trend has evolved with neon versions, chiffon overlays, sexy slits, digital prints, glamorous sequins and even iridescent panelling. Think of the low necklines and easy cuts that draped waif figures and drool over this absolute must have this summer. To get the most amount of wear out of your luxe slip dress, layer it with multiple sheer pieces. For extra coverage, pair one with a boxy cropped jacket, a smart shrug or a belted cardigan. Keep accessories simple and delicate; avoid overpowering the feminine silhouette.

The slip dress gets a glam touch in this layered Shruti-Sancheti ensemble (above). For a casual look, belt it up like the mannequin at the Allen Solly store at Select CITYWALK (right).

Drape yourself in sugar-coated lace to flaunt a little flesh. The lace trend bears a new level of sophistication this season, increasing its timeless beauty just when you’d think it can’t possibly get any better. Used both as accent and the main attraction, lace was spotted all over spring/summer 2014’s runways. What’s more, this romantic fabric goes beyond dresses and skirts this season. Tops, shorts and flared trousers are an alternative way to take part in the lace trend. And as far as the colour is concerned, inject some with electric blue, green and fuchsia; or stay with the evergreen white. Now that’s what we call a perfect summer wardrobe!

White whims If peace is what you want, get rid of noisy prints and saturated colour pops. Prepare a detox diet for your wardrobe with a complete white-out. Here is your blank canvas this season where you might not be able to play with colours but the silhouettes, layers, fabric and textures are all on your easel. Try to mix textures and layers when wearing head to toe of any one colour. The collections this season include textures from techno finishes to classic cottons and transparent silks. Combine white lace or chiffon, and eveningwear weaves. Add accents of colour through accessories. Gold and white is a classic summer combo and becomes hotter this season.

Designer brand Shruti Sancheti nails the checked look

Back to square one Chic and classic - checks bring a play of contrasts to day-to-night dressing, in one minimalist stroke. And look at the versatility of the pattern - they adapt to any silhouette. Trousers, skirts and dresses have all gotten the treatment this summer and each brings its own statement to the party. No wonder then at the London Fashion Week we had Oscar de la Renta, Derek Lam and Carven and Stella flirting with the pattern! Don’t be afraid to pair checks with checks, for a subtler approach consider a tartan jacket. Team checked separates with tonal trousers or vice versa and mix it with urban dressing, such as track pants, a neoprene hoodie, a pair of shorts or a mesh sweat shirt. Don’t be intimidated by the colour, tone it down with white or grey. You can even pair a neon yellow bag with a floral dress that has hints of buttercup in it. The yellow accessory will work to bring out the colour in the dress and tie the look together.

You can choose from something unapologetically yellow or soft buttery hues of the citrus shade.

Eleganza by Salvatore Ferragamo, a luxurious fragrance that celebrates feminine grace and seduction. Nautica recently unveiled a men’s fragrance, Voyage N-83. Classic, sophisticated, and thrilling, the fragrance evokes crisp salty breezes, rugged spices, and woody musks.

• Try a variation. Check to see if the perfume you already wear has a summer, cologne, or “l’eau” version. Though its different from case to case, these are often less concentrated than the original, and perfumers enhance the fresher top notes and soften the heavier “dry down,” the last notes of the scent to develop. One of my favourites for the ladies is Signorina

• Know your taste. Many of the foods you like to eat in summer translate into gorgeous fragrances. That means anything citrus: tropical fruits, mint, and rosemary. La Vie De Bohème by Anna Sui opens with a blend of feminine pink florals, rich burgundy berries, and a kiss of electrifying, sensual woods. The same goes for spicy scents. Instead of heady cumin and cinnamon, look for ones, like germanium and patchouli. Acqua Essenziale by Salvatore Ferragamo is a beautiful example.

rom easy breezy florals, to fruit accents and musky notes perfect for warm summer evenings these summer fragrances are perfect for weekend breaks and every day wear as long as the sun is shining these are the scents you ought to be spritzing. Why not switch to a scent that’s bright and vibrant, something that matches the weather and your mood this time of year?

May-June 2014 selectcitywalk.com

Fragrant tips Choose a long-lasting scent: “Citrus, green, and floral scents are brighter than woodsy ones, but they don’t last long. If you want a perfume that you won’t have to refresh after four hours, look for words like ‘spicy’ or ‘oriental’ in the description.” Make it last: “Fragrance lasts much longer on moisturised skin, but don’t apply a scented moisturiser first—it will conflict with your fine perfume. Instead, use an unscented body oil, like almond oil, all over your body.” Spritz it: “Spray your perfume on your ankles, behind your knees, in the crooks of your elbows, and on the nape of your neck.”

• Wear white. Soft florals won’t overpower, and the softest— Indian tuberose, lotus, and freesia—have white petals. The Omnia Collection by Bulgari is a Collection of Fragrance Gemstones and it’s an encounter between the gemstones and beautiful flowers. Their latest launch Omnia Indian Garnet is a new divine gem story conveying the magic of India. It blends mandarin, saffron and the Indian Tuberose. • Lighten up. Humidity and sweat agitate the fragrance molecules, causing them to evaporate rather than sticking to your skin. This means perfumes actually smell stronger when it’s warm out. Because they tend to contain smaller, more volatile molecules, light scents don’t last long, so I recommend stashing a travel size of your summer fragrance in your purse and reapplying throughout the day.

Store it: “The best place to store fragrance is in a cool, dark place away from any humidity. Contrary to popular belief, it should not be stored in the fridge and never in your bathroom or near air conditioners or heating units. The precious oils will become distorted when they’re exposed to extreme heat or cold. Also, always make sure the lid is on securely so the air doesn’t cause the perfume to oxidize.” Expiry date: “When your fragrance starts to get darker and syrupy, it’s a sign the perfume has a lot of natural ingredients and will get stronger. Check testers at stores, as they have been on the counter for a while. Note the colour compared to a new bottle. If the colour is different because it has been exposed to air, then you will know there are a lot of naturals. If the colour is same, it likely has synthetics and won’t go bad.”

Floral touch

Safe bet, Zara, `1,990

It’s time for the man-flower to bloom. And it doesn’t make you look effeminate! Not everyone is comfortable flaunting flowers if not on a beach vacation. Our advice is to start with a subtle move. You can begin with a floral printed scarf wrapped stylishly around your neck, a bouquet bow or posies in your

tie. If bright floral colours intimidate you, stick to prints in shades of blue and grey. T-shirts with bold flowers in tropical colours are another easy way to incorporate this trend. If you are feeling a little more comfortable, try a floral blazer with a white T-shirt. But never pack all of it together, one element of clothing with flowers is enough.

Cropped trousers, cargo shorts or the casual bermudas... men are advised to show some leg this summer. Pair your shorts in bright colours with smart T-shirts, a canvas belt and loafers. Nautical stripes and linen shades are evergreen in summer and will add to your wardrobe. But the current trend is to opt for neons in a slimmer fit, much like a pair of denims. Pick ones that fall in a straight line from hip to hem and end an inch or two above the knee.

Colours of the day

Pink and orange have been welcomed into the male bastion several seasons back; now it’s time for yellow to follow suit. If you are a conservative dresser, start with accessories. A brightly coloured belt is a fast, inexpensive and easy way to enhance all your existing outfits. Pair the belt with jeans and a white shirt (or polo shirt) for a casual look during the day. While choosing a peppy shirt in a blazing red, make sure that it is the only bright piece on you.

How to make it look real • Use bark or Spanish moss to cover the top of the pot that your plant is in to help make it look more natural. • A gorgeous pot will also go a long way towards creating a good aesthetic with your artificial plants. • If you really want to fool people, try mixing an artificial plant with a real plant such as a low maintenance and hard to kill succulent or cactus.

Any awkward corner of your kitchen can be filled with a small planter. Fill in the gaping space in the between wall mounted cupboards and ceiling with series of artificial plants. You can also go for delicate hanging ones in this space.

The dining room

Find stunning centrepieces and you can play, with flowers of different colours. Here you can use large plants (a palm tree) or a corner pot hanging from the ceiling.

The bathroom

Plants can be a perfect decoration for a corner, or to place over the toilet or

laundry if you do not have much space. If you want to give certain exuberance to the environment, you can try a larger dark green foliage if the size of your bathroom allows it. Bonsai are also perfect in this environment because they give a touch of serenity.

The bedroom

In this environment, artificial plants are also very good option since most doctors advise not to have natural plants. Many people like to use artificial roses for softness and sophistication. A favourite place to place is the night table by the bed.

Don’t forget to keep leggings with your little one’s frocks as even a slight temperature drop can cause running nose and it’s good cover for active kids. Bring a hat along especially for babies - protection from sun as well as cold!

Clothes with buttons for easy diaperaccess are great. Bring socks as planes can get chilly sometimes, and socks can definitely help keep those baby toes warm. Pick up a one-piece outfit because they don’t tend to ride up and bunch up as much. Bring bibs for children who you think might need them.

Naked truths

In the sweltering heat, an overdone face can be a disaster. The best is if your makeup can make you look neat and fresh. So, here is how to get the no-makeup look right

base

A natural makeup look created by MAC at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, 2014

54

Nude makeup is not about using brown lipstick with a tan blush. It is about looking fresh with a healthy skintone. If you can get it right, it will boost your skin colour and add a dash of brightness to your face. And this summer, makeup gurus are swearing by it. Says Mickey Contractor of MAC cosmetics, “Every summer, neutral or nude makeup becomes very important. This season, add a tinge of blushing pink so that you don’t look washed out.” Nude makeup will mean different products for different skin tones and a major responsibility is on the foundation. So be very careful while choosing one. There shouldn’t be a lot of colour on your face, just enough to give it an even tone. Apply tinted moisturiser or sheer foundation. If you want to skip the foundation, you can do so. But use a concealer to hide blemishes.

Blush

Prefer not to choose a tan-shaded blush, as this can make you look darker and your skin patchy. And a dark blush is harder to apply perfectly. Choose a peachy pink and dust it with a little bronzer before applying. A touch of shimmer will make your skin look dewy-fresh.

During the day, eyes should not be heavily made-up. Use a separating mascara instead of a volumising one as the latter will make your eyes look stark. Skip the liquid or gel eyeliner; instead use a pencil one, that too lightly to create a smudged effect. Avoid an eye-shadow, instead brush a little shimmer on your upper lid.

Lips

Be careful not to make your lips look over glossy or a boring matte. A creamy lipstick or balm works wonders. If you want it to be of the perfect consistency, apply a gloss and then dab it for a smudged effect. Keep refreshing it throughout the day for a fresh pout.

Beauty mistakes that can give you wrinkles at 20

Smoking: Research has proved that smoking is the most common cause of wrinkles. Even a couple of smokes in a day add to your facial age. So skip cigarettes and lose the lines.

56

Alcohol: All types of alcohol dehydrate the skin. If you drink at night, chances are you will see the effect on your face the next morning. It will appear less fresh and plump. Over time, your skin will lose elasticity and develop lines.

Pull and push: Avoid making faces. It can lead to stretching of skin and hence, lines. Do you stretch your eyes while applying your liner? Don’t overdo, or you may get finer lines around your eyes.

Gum chewing: May sound unbelievable, but chewing gum adds to fine lines around the lower mouth. And there are no studies to prove that this habit gives you toned cheek bones.

Sleep on your face: If you can, avoid sleeping on your face. This practice may lead to wrinkles on the side of the face that touches the pillow regularly. Either sleep on satin pillowcase that slides or best, sleep on your back.

Hair colour for a day Neon strands are the hottest hair trend this season. But if you don’t want a rainbow pop for weeks together, go for a hairchalk. Wash your hair (skip the leave-in conditioner), towel dry and comb out the tangles. Pick up strands and run the hairchalk down it. Twist and turn the hair for a cool ombre effect. You can blow-dry to dry the hair fast but you may loose colour. After the hair is dry, seal the colour with a hot iron. Will last you for one wash.

Planet in a penny

From bamboo shacks on a palm-fringed island to a glitzy global city, checkout these budget travel options to unwind this summer without worrying about your wallet

H

ow many times, buried under piles of work in office, have you sworn you needed a break, then checked your bank account and gone quietly back to work? Because, of course, who could possibly go on a holiday in the pittance you have? But the times they are a-changin’ and there’s something called budget travel that can save the day. So, you promptly go to your friends and folks for advice on good options and invariably get the done-to-death Thailand or Sri Lanka. Really? Are there no other destinations one could travel to on a shoestring? So you decide to go to the one-stop solution: Google. And this is what you find..

Cambodia

POCKET FRIENDLY • Boats are another fairly cheap way of getting around • A 4- hour bus ride costs around `370. There is no rail network operating in Cambodia • Beach bungalows with fans but no electricity at night on Rabbit Island, off the coastal town of Kep cost `180 per day

64

If you want to travel within cities your best bet is to hop on a motorbike taxi or a tuk tuk. Motos are cheaper; starting from `30. Boats are another fairly cheap way of getting around. In Phnom Penh you can charter your own 20+ passenger boat for as little as `1,250 for sunset cruises down the Mekong River. Don’t expect to find buses, underground or over ground trains in the cities. Buses only operate across country, but it is a very cheap way of getting from one city to another. A four-hour bus ride costs around `370. There is no rail network. In terms of accommodation you can find very cheap places to stay. Beach bungalows with fans but no electricity at night on Rabbit Island, off the coastal town of Kep cost `180 per day.

Bali Bemos, converted mini-buses that function as mix of public bus and taxi, are Bali’s cheapest form of transportation. The problem is they may be time-consuming. Taxis (generally four-seater) are readily available and can be found on virtually every street in the villages as well. It’s best to hop into a metered taxi. Scooters are available for hire (without a licence required) as well and are relatively easy to drive. The cheapest food in Bali is available at warungs, or local cafes. These eateries may not look polished, but are clean and serve authentic local fare.

POCKET FRIENDLY • The cheapest eating on Bali is through local warungs, or cafes • Bemos, converted mini-buses are the cheapest mode of transport • Scooters are available for hire (without a licence required) and are relatively easy to drive.

Away from Istanbul, and the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, budget travellers can travel on `1,800 per day. Take the public buses in Turkey, they are affordable. The food in Turkey is usually served in heaping portions. Kebabs and Donair-Kababs(shawarma) come as cheap as `120.

Mommies are special every day of our life but don’t forget to pamper them on this special day. Here’s a list of gifts you can buy her on Mother’s Day

wish, a thought and a smile... that’s all mothers need from us to stay happy. They don’t demand a show of our love and respect and will never ever reveal what they need as a gift, but on Mother’s Day let’s make them feel a little more special. To plan the right gift, you can ask her if she needs anything. If she sticks to her “I need nothing” routine, search her wardrobe and observe her for a few days to find out what she would absolutely love.. Maybe a gift of jewellery or a signature handbag? Or maybe she needs to add to her skincare routine. Perfumes and makeup pieces also make for wonderful gifts. Though footwear can a be a tricky buy, try getting her a pair that will make her feel trendy. It’s easy to get her shoesize! But if you want to go beyond skin-deep

A pony tail, minimal makeup and simple clothes - Ileana D’Cruz vows to stay casual and chic this summer

L

ook who is set to scorch Bollywood this summer - girl next door Ileana D’Cruz! From saris to shorts - Ileana has flaunted her diverse wardrobe both on and off-screen and now she will be obliging the humble two-piece, bikini as well! We caught up with Ileana for an exclusive interview on her style statement.

Have you changed ever since you joined Bollywood? During my college days I was not popular among guys. I guess, I was not pretty enough and was quite a shy girl. All that has changed now.

what led to this transformation? Makeup! It works like magic and boosts one’s confidence. It also helps that the best makeup artists groom me to perfection.

What look do you prefer on a regular day? I am a very laid-back person, so I prefer to keep things simple. My beauty regime is just kajal and lip balm. I prefer to tie up my hair in a pony to fight heat and humidity.

What is your personal style statement?

Ileana (above) sports a polka dress from Zara at a recent screening of her movie Main Tera Hero. And though she is a no-makeup person, who can say no to MAC’s Ruby Woo?

70

As far as clothes or accessories are concerned, I prefer to keep it simple yet classy. I am not comfortable in skimpy clothes and would wear one only on screen. I favour black outfits to stay safe.

What keeps you going in this competition? Coffee I guess, as I am always in the mood to have some. I keep my calm and do my own thing.

Hawaa Hawaai

Purani Jeans

Releasing in June,14

(May 1) The movie with a nostalgic name as Purani Jeans can make one wonder what is in store. Well, director Tanushri Chattrji Bassu tries to keep the story line rather simple by weaving in the emotions of love and friendship among her young actors Tanuj Virwani, Izabelle Leite and Aditya Seal. How they go through their journey in life is what one can watch and relate to.

(May 9) With an interesting name like Hawaa Hawaai, this movie promises to entertain, though the poster of the stake-board seems intriguing initially but the story line is kept simple in order to show the victory of the human spirit and how friendship helps in dreams coming true.

Released in May,14

Catch a flick at PVR Premiere or PVR Gold Class, Select Citywalk

Heropanti

(May 16) The movie is all set to launch Tiger Shroff in Bollywood. In fact ‘like farther like son’ is one comparison that might pull the audience to the theatre. There seems to be a subtle resemblance to the super- hit movie Hero from 1983 that had marked the debut of Jackie himself. One hopes that director Sabbir Khan has more to deliver as well.

Fugly

Ek Villain

(Jun 13) The name comes from ‘fashionably ugly’. This Bollywood thriller directed by Kabir Sadanand promises to be interesting. Set in the lanes of Delhi, it is the story of four friends who are quirky yet fun.

(Jun 27) Mohit Suri is known to deliver romantic movies that are high on passion and after the success of Aashiqui 2, he wanted to cast his muse Shraddha Kapoor again. She looks amazing paired opposite Siddharth Malhotra. This is rather an action romance and not much has been revealed about the story.
