BOARD MESSAGES GEORGE C. RUOTOLO, JR., CFRE CHAIR, RAMAPO COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY BOARD OF TRUSTEES While there were numerous accomplishments this past year, certainly one of our crowning achievements of the 2015-2016 academic term was the College’s successful application to the State Higher Education Capital Facilities programs for additional funding. Approved by the citizens of New Jersey in 2012, the Higher Education Capital Facilities program fills a decades-long gap in public support for infrastructure at the State’s colleges and universities.
“My tenure as Chair has been rewarding on many fronts... together, we will continue to advance the mission of Ramapo College.”
The Board held a special meeting in January to review and approve the funding requirements for the Higher Education Capital Facilities program request. Our proposal outlined renovations to the existing George T. Potter Library, and the addition of a Learning Commons to the Library building. By June we received notification that the College was awarded $15 million for this important project. Though it will be a few years until the new Library and Learning Commons are completed, the members of the Board and I are delighted to see this next step in the College’s evolution come to fruition.
In addition to capital growth, the College adopted a number of new programs during the 2016 academic year. The new majors, minors, and certificate programs respond to student interests, faculty strengths, and societal needs. Among the new majors is elementary education, and new minors in digital filmmaking, plant studies, contemplative studies, and American studies. The nursing master’s program added tracks in family nurse practitioner and nursing administration/health care administration, and the Anisfield School of Business added a master’s of science in accounting. On a more personal note, this year marks my last year in service as Chair of the Board of Trustees. My tenure as Chair has been rewarding on many fronts—among them, I have most enjoyed the opportunities I have had to acknowledge and advance, with so many of you, the tremendous talents of the members of the College. The Board of Trustees and I are grateful to all the donors listed here, who have demonstrated their confidence in Ramapo’s faculty, students, and staff with a financial contribution. Together, we will continue to advance the mission of Ramapo College.
RALPH MASTRANGELO CHAIR, RAMAPO COLLEGE FOUNDATION BOARD OF GOVERNORS The support and generosity of our alumni and benefactors is extraordinary and allows the College to reach significant milestones and furthers the Foundation’s mission to support the students, faculty and programs of Ramapo College. We enjoyed many successes in fiscal year 2016 and for that I express my heartfelt thanks.
“... generosity and loyalty of our supporters ... continue to shape the educational experiences and aspirations of Ramapo students.”
The permanent endowment, which provides a steady stream of funds every year, has grown steadily. In 2016, eight new endowments were created and the corpus increased by $1 million, an increase of 8 percent over the prior year. In fiscal year 2016, the Foundation secured more than $5.4 million in revenue, grants and gifts. As a result, the Foundation was able to provide more than $2.3 million to the College for scholarships, campus grants, and salary support. In addition, faculty and staff members were awarded $3.1 million in outside grants.
Close to $1 million was provided to the College for important capital projects on campus, including the Adler Center and Krame Center for Contemplative Studies, among others. The result of this giving has had a direct impact on students: Over 400 scholarships totaling more than $603,000 were awarded; close to 300 students directly benefited from Foundation Allocation Grants, which funded faculty/student research, study abroad, and professional conferences -- all of which wouldn’t be possible without the financial support provided by the Foundation and our donors particularly through the Annual Fund and Special Fund Raising Events. On behalf of the Ramapo College Foundation, my sincerest thanks to all of those who helped us support the College in these most meaningful ways. Each and every contribution has helped enrich the academic and personal experiences of our campus community.

Front cover: Kameron Pond is a constructed pond that was part of the cattle raising operation on the Birch Estate before Ramapo College was founded. The Pond was named after founding faculty member Joel Kameron, an environmental psychologist in the former School of Environmental Studies. Joel was much beloved and, when he tragically died at a young age, the community responded to a proposal to give the pond Joel’s name. The hydrology of the Pond was affected by I-287’s construction. About 10 years ago the Pond was dredged to restore its depth. Another colleague, Dick Graham, carried out a project with students to build an island in the pond to create an enriched habitat. The unfinished “Graham’s spit” sits near the future Padovano Commons and may serve as an outdoor seating area.

A MESSAGE FROM
THE PRESIDENT
M
y meetings and discussions with the leadership of other colleges and universities, both nationally and internationally, have reaffirmed my conviction that one of the defining characteristics of Ramapo College as a premier liberal arts institution is the ability of undergraduate students to collaborate with their professors. Ramapo students take advantage of one-on-one opportunities that simply do not exist for most undergraduates across the country.
Working with Ciana Hamlett, a senior international business major from Bergenfield, New Jersey, Gonpu found the global market prices of iron ore, in particular, had a strong impact on the exchange rate.
To illustrate this unique culture of collaboration, I have asked faculty in each of the five schools to highlight the innovative research they have been conducting with their students. I invite you to read on and explore their fascinating work.
The experience proved especially compelling for Hamlett, who hopes to pursue a career in economic development in Africa. In October she and Gonpu presented their findings at the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges conference in North Adams, Massachusetts.
ANISFIELD SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Professor: George Gonpu (Economics) Student: Ciana Hamlett ’17 How does a Ramapo professor come to pursue research into the connection between commodity prices and exchange rates in Liberia? It helps when that professor is a native of the West African country who served as deputy minister of finance for two years following Liberia’s devastating civil war. George Gonpu says the Liberian exchange rate is critical to daily life for the country’s 4.3 million people because of Liberia’s reliance on international trade and its special relationship with the United States. In Liberia, Gonpu explains, residents buy imports priced in U.S. dollars, but they get paid in Liberian dollars (both currencies are legal monetary units in Liberia). Meanwhile, Liberia sells its primary imports—rubber and iron ore—on global markets in exchange for U.S. dollars. “So the rate at which the Liberian dollar is valued for each U.S. dollar is important,” Gonpu says, “if they’re going to be able to afford products coming into the country.”
2
Ramapo College Magazine | Winter Annual Report FY 16
“These findings are important steps in helping to influence policy making,” Gonpu says, “in the sense that the value of the currency, which is important for international trade, is influenced by how much money is provided in the economy.”
“Overall,” Hamlett says, “it was such a great opportunity for me to gain experience with presenting in front of a group of my peers as well as other professors from different universities.”

SOCIAL SCIENCE AND HUMAN SERVICES
CONTEMPORARY ARTS
Professor: Donna Crawley (Psychology) Student: Casey Ramos ’17
Professor: Ben Neill (Music Production and Industry) Student: Jimmy Warren ’17
As a forensic psychologist, Donna Crawley’s research in recent years has focused on factors that influence the public’s perception of criminal defendants. “I want to understand why people perceive defendants the way they do,” Crawley says, “in the hopes of understanding why we sometimes perceive defendants unfairly.”
“It’s kind of an unusual genesis for a piece of music,” Ben Neill says of his 40-minute composition, Fathom: Hudson River Data as Music.
Crawley’s work examines character traits and mortality salience, measuring how people respond when they’re reminded of their own mortality. Her research has shown consistently that empathetic people, when induced into mortality salience, get more sympathetic toward crime victims. As a result, she says, “That makes them make harsher judgments about a criminal defendant. It implies if a prosecutor could remind a jury about their own mortality, throw something into the summation or the opening statement that potentially could nudge their attitude more negatively against the defendant.” Crawley makes it a point to take her research assistants to professional conferences. Last May seniors Janelle Leyva and Casey Ramos accompanied Crawley to the Association for Psychological Science conference in Chicago, where they presented a poster on their research. In October they presented work done with Michael DiMaggio ’16 at the New England Psychological Association conference in Worcester, Massachusetts. And this spring they will travel together to Boston for a conference of the Eastern Psychological Association. “You’re building the next generation of researchers,” Crawley says, “and the process of doing this is, I think, really important for our students.” Ramos would concur. A psychology major from Hawthorne, New Jersey, she teamed with Crawley after expressing an interest in research. “That’s something I couldn’t have gotten in a regular class,” says Ramos, who hopes to pursue a Ph.D. program in psychology.
Surely such an observation qualifies Neill as a master of understatement. For in piecing together Fathom with the lyricist and singer Mimi Goese, Neill relied heavily on scientific surveys of the Hudson River around the time Hurricane Sandy rattled the Northeast in October 2012. The notion of using raw hydrologic and meteorological data—water temperature, humidity, salinity, electrical conductivity, and so on—arose out of conversations Neill had at the Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries at Clarkson University in upstate New York. The institute commissioned the work, and Neill received a grant from New Music USA, an organization that supports the creation and performance of new music. Then Neill had to figure out how to take that hard data— collected by the River and Estuary Observatory Network from seven locations, from the Adirondacks to West Point—and turn it into music. “I spent a couple of months coming up with a method for using a number of different computer programs where I can take these graphs and turn them into music material,” Neill says. And that’s where Jimmy Warren stepped in. A senior music production major from Rockaway, New Jersey, Warren helped manage the computer software on which the project depended. “He basically processed all of the images and got them ready for me to put them into the software to generate the music,” Neill says. “I don’t think I would have finished the project without him.” “It’s a very unique project, for sure,” Warren says. “I don’t know who else would have done something like that. The main thing I took away is that anything could be musical.”
“She’s been a great mentor,” Ramos says of Crawley, “and I think every college student should aim to find that mentor.”

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
really just “ It’s the hands-on,
one-on-one with the faculty that teaches you how to do research. I think that’s fairly unique at Ramapo College.” -Zachary Stavros
SALAMENO SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND GLOBAL STUDIES Professor: Jeremy Teigen (Political Science Student: Zachary Stavros ’18 Jeremy Teigen has studied the role of military service in the American political process since writing his dissertation on the subject at the University of Texas. It’s a pertinent topic for Teigen, who enrolled at the University of Wisconsin under the GI Bill following his service in the U.S. Air Force. “Military service is inherently qualitative,” Teigen says. “How do you throw that into a database?” Teigen does it from a variety of perspectives. He looks at how veterans versus non-veterans tend to vote. He looks at how veteran candidates for Congress and the White House fare versus nonveteran candidates. In 2015 he co-wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post that examined why younger veterans today tend to lean more conservative and vote more Republican. Since coming to Ramapo in 2005, Teigen has been building a database from the biennial campaigns for the U.S. House of Representatives. One could measure the impact of military service by the sheer number of veterans serving in Congress, Teigen says. But those numbers have fallen dramatically since the 1970s, when veterans held three out of four seats in Congress (today that figure is closer to one in five). Each election year, Teigen recruits an undergraduate to help him collect data about veteran candidates. “He or she has to be tenacious in looking through biographical sources,” Teigen says. Last fall he enlisted Zachary Stavros, a junior political science major from Dumont, New Jersey. Under Teigen’s supervision, Stavros combed through the biographies of candidates in all 435 House races.

think it happened, and this is what we’re going to try to do next.’”
Professor: Loraine Tan (Chemistry) Student: Aleksander Goranov ’18
Among the students working in Tan’s lab in the fall was Aleksandar Goranov, a senior chemistry major from Bulgaria. Goranov hopes to pursue a career in marine chemistry, and he says his time in Tan’s lab helped him clarify that goal.
Unlike Ramapo’s other four schools, the School of Theoretical and Applied Science maintains a formal, credit-bearing research honors program, for which Loraine Tan serves as director. And unlike undergraduates at most other colleges, Tan says, Ramapo undergrads can take advantage of many opportunities to conduct hands-on research with their professors. Last fall Tan supervised six undergraduates working on two projects in her lab. Typically, Tan says, “If you have Master’s or Ph.D. candidates, those students are the ones using the resources in the lab. In those kinds of places, if you’re lucky enough to get into a lab as an undergrad, you’re an assistant on someone’s project. You don’t have the opportunity much on your own.” Not so at Ramapo. Tan says her undergraduate assistants not only conduct research in the lab, they direct much of that research themselves. Last April one group of Tan’s students presented its work on the “Solvent Study of Fluorescent Probe Molecules” at the annual TAS Student Research Symposium. “In my lab, the students tell me their goals for the project,” she says. “They design the experiment, they execute it, and they troubleshoot it. They acquire all the data, analyze it, then come back and talk to me: ‘Ok, this is what happened, this is why we
“It’s been a great, great experience,” Goranov says. “I don’t have any words to describe it. It kind of pushed me in the right direction of really what I want to do.” ——— These most meaningful collaborations reap immeasurable benefits for the students, faculty and the College as a whole. Students are afforded mentorship opportunities to define their academic goals, launch their graduate studies, or catapult into the career of their choice. Faculty can conduct cutting edge research, and collaborate with peers on projects at the forefront of developments in their respective fields. This interaction enriches the material that they deliver during lectures and labs. Our faculty and student research initiatives, presented at symposia and conferences and published in refereed journals, raise the profile of Ramapo among liberal arts colleges. Of course, none of these opportunities would be available without the extraordinary support Ramapo receives from its many benefactors. Thank you for your ongoing support of our faculty and students. ECONOMIC FACTORS THAT WILL AFFECT THE FUTURE The major components of RCNJ’s operating revenue have changed over time due to declining State support over the last several years. In addition, the College faces limited expense flexibility as salaries and benefits are the largest expenses of the College and the State controls salary and benefit negotiations for a majority of College employees. New Jersey continues to face challenging economic times including the underfunding of the State’s pension plan. These economic factors may affect future appropriations to the College, and reduced appropriations may place an increased burden on tuition and fees.
Despite these challenges, the College has been able to consistently increase its net position with solid financial operations and fiscally conservative budgeting and financial planning practices. Ramapo has had Unrestricted (3,268) 45,391 tuition growth of only 8.8 percent total in the last five years, as compared Total Net Position $94,854 $93,345 to other New Jersey institutions which average approximately 13 percent tuition increase for that same time. Masters programs are continuing to enroll significant numbers of students and the College expects enrollment to continue to grow modestly over the next few years. The College is preparing to offer additional opportunities, such as the Family Nursing Practitioner and the Nursing Administrator tracks in the Masters of Science in Nursing and the new Master’s of Science in Accounting. As the College looks forward, it will continue to expand its graduate programs to meet future needs and build on its undergraduate strengths. It is important RCNJ continue to sustain strong operating cash flows in order to meet its financial obligations. The College will continue to focus on financial strength and sustainability, as it continues to seek new and enhanced revenue streams and operating efficiencies to maintain its ability to increase total net assets and meet the needs of its students. The College remains committed to its mission of serving the educational needs of New Jersey.
RAMAPO COLLEGE FOUNDATION FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS The mission of Ramapo College Foundation “is to provide resources that make a difference in Ramapo College of New Jersey’s quest for educational excellence.” The Foundation, established in 1971 as a nonprofit corporation, is a 501(c)(3) charitable institution. Its purposes include providing funds to Ramapo College for student scholarships, educational programs, faculty development and research, community programs, construction projects, capital needs, and other College activities for which state funds may not be sufficient or available.
or position. Trends are important to monitor, but in any given year a significant change in net assets may result from a unique event such as receipt of a significant donation or a capital payment to the College. In Fiscal 2016, many payments were received on prior year pledged income, of which significant amounts were paid to the College. Those payments are reflected below and reduce the net assets, appropriately so since it is the Foundations mission of providing support to the College. In addition, in accordance with prudent accounting practice, in Fiscal 2016, we established a reserve for a receivable.
The Foundation’s financial report includes three basic financial statements: the Statements of Net Assets, the Statements of Activities, and the Statements of Cash Flows which have been prepared in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America as promulgated by the Financial Accounting Standards Board. Presented below are condensed versions of these statements. The full Foundation financial statements including footnotes notes can be found on the College website: www.ramapo.edu/foundation/finreports
The Grant Office had a successful year, securing more than 22 new grant awards in Fiscal 2016. Grants revenue increased 21 percent year-overyear, as a result of aggressively pursuing more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education) related grants, such as “Paterson Middle School University” and “Little Ferry STEM project.”
FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS In Fiscal 2016, the Foundation’s financial position continues to be strong, as seen in the chart below. The endowment balance remained at more than $16 million, there were eight new endowments created and the corpus increased by $1 million, or 8 percent, over the prior year. In addition, over $820,000 of endowed and annual funds were available to the College for scholarship and program support. The growth in the endowment surpassed the yearly goal and is in line to meet the strategic goals set both by the Foundation and College for growth. This is despite the 5 percent average spend rate, as compared to the average of 4.2 percent for all public institutions (according to National Association of College and University Business Officers fiscal 2015 statistics). There also has been an increase in student scholarships issued, which include funding from the endowment as well as annual support from donors. In addition, the largest annual scholarship from an individual donor was received in Fiscal 2016 and will benefit minority students who could not attend the College without such assistance. FUTURE MATTERS Ramapo College continues to expand and renovate on-campus facilities. The College received a $15 million bond from the State of New Jersey to support the refurbishment of Potter Library and the construction of a 21st Century Learning Commons. As a result, the Foundation has launched a single purpose capital campaign for private funding to provide additional capital support. Continued emphasis will also be placed on endowment growth, planned giving legacy programs and increasing annual fund participation levels. The Foundation is working on meeting the goals of its five-year Strategic Plan (2014-2018), along with its commitments to the College’s Plan. www.ramapo.edu

Examples of architectural designs by Bohlin, Cywinski, Jackson
TECHNOLOGY-RICH SPACE DESIGNED FOR UPGRADE TO POTTER LIBRARY Plans are underway to upgrade the Potter Library and create a new major hub on campus. The College has hired the award-winning architectural firm Bohlin, Cywinski, Jackson of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania for the design and renovation of the Potter Library and creation of a new Learning Commons. The role of libraries has changed drastically since the Potter Library was built 40 years ago, and the new Learning Commons will have technology-rich spaces designed for both collaborative work and quiet study. Additional spaces will include media
rooms for screenings, video conferences and remote learning, as well as lounge areas, assembly spaces and dedicated spaces for special collections. Several benefactors have already made generous gifts in support of the new Learning Commons, and we look forward to sharing more details about them and this exciting project in our next issue. Do you have fond memories of the Potter Library? We invite alumni to share their memories at alumni@ramapo.edu, or on social media. On Twitter, @RamapoAlumni, or on Instagram, @RamapoCollegeNJ, use #PotterLibraryMemories.
