RAMAPO COLLEGE MAGAZINE

from the office of the president PETER P. MERCER, Ph.D.

We are all indebted, in a variety of ways on personal and professional levels, to those who assist us on our life’s journey. An encouraging word or gesture from a supportive family member, friend, teacher or co-worker can and often does make a world of difference, especially during difficult patches. Our support networks provide crucial sustenance and guidance at various stages in our life. This is especially evident during our formative years as we begin to make decisions about the shape and direction of our personal lives and professional careers. As I enter my tenth year as president of Ramapo College, I have witnessed the growth in that network which provides essential assistance to our students, enabling us to achieve our objectives as a liberal arts college and to seek how, consistent with our mission, we may do more.

"

You have changed the direction of lives in immeasurable ways.

"

Your financial support and dedication to Ramapo has been most obvious during our most recent capital campaign. The pages of this annual report list the names of our many consistent supporters from among our alumni, business partners, parents, faculty, staff and many other benefactors. These individuals and many others joined us in making it possible to surpass our capital campaign goal by nearly $14 million as of December 2014. On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, I am grateful for your ongoing support and commitment to Ramapo College. You share in the successes of our students and faculty. Whether it is through creating student scholarships or endowments, gifts to our capital projects, or serving as career advisors to our students or as advisory board members to our schools, you have made a positive impact. You have changed the direction of lives in immeasurable ways. I am especially thankful to the members of our Board of Trustees and Board of Governors. We are indebted to these men and women for their stewardship and service.

Sincerely,

Peter P. Mercer, Ph.D. President, Ramapo College of New Jersey

BOARD MESSAGES

GEORGE C. RUOTOLO, JR. CHAIR, RAMAPO COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY BOARD OF TRUSTEES

As the higher education landscape grows more complex, so too does the role of the Board of Trustees. As a result, over the past year the Board has been increasingly focused on how its operations directly support the College’s Strategic Plan. To that end, the Board established and achieved several goals in 2014 and set benchmarks for 2015. In 2014, the Board adopted a policy manual outlining best practices, an orientation process, and expectations for the Board and President. The Board also committed to annual retreats focused on enhancing our development and effectiveness as a group. Our recent retreat, Trusteeship in the 21st Century, took place in October and addressed the Board’s role as strategic stewards. In addition, the Board formalized some of its relationships on campus to include a practice to meet with the Faculty Assembly Executive Council periodically and endorsed the formal review and evaluation process for the President.

"

The Board will continue its efforts throughout 2015 to examine key performance indicators established last year, and the College’s effectiveness in achieving these goals.

"

The Board will continue its efforts throughout 2015 to examine key performance indicators established last year, and the College’s effectiveness in achieving these goals. They include the four-year graduation rate, ethnicity and inclusiveness of the undergraduate student population and the debt burden ratio. We are also committed to an annual self-evaluation process among our members to improve our own proficiency. I am also pleased to announce the following recent additions to the Board: Susan A. Vallario, Charles Shotmeyer, Sharlene Vichness and Bartholomew Talamini. Susan and Chuck come to the Board with extensive experience in corporate fields, while Sharlene and Bart bring significant demonstrated skill in the non-profit and educational sectors, respectively. The entire Board joins me in expressing our appreciation for your ongoing support of Ramapo College.

FRANCES K. HACKETT ’80 CHAIR, RAMAPO COLLEGE FOUNDATION BOARD OF GOVERNORS

The Ramapo College Foundation completed another successful year in 2014. Our alumni and benefactors, through their generosity and ongoing support, are responsible for these achievements. Our endowment balance continues to grow. As of June 30, 2014, our endowment stood at $15.45 million, up 19 percent from the prior year for a three-year increase of 53 percent. We also witnessed advancement in the participation rate of alumni, faculty and staff in our Comprehensive Capital Campaign. As a result, the campaign has raised more than $54 million as of December 2014, $14 million more than the original goal of $40 million. This support is essential not only for major capital projects but for student scholarship support and grants to support faculty and student research. In fiscal year 2014, we awarded 347 scholarships to students, an increase of 13 percent from the previous fiscal year. In addition, there was an increase of 40 percent in grant proposals to state and federal entities from fiscal year 2013. This included an increase in firsttime grant seekers among faculty and staff.

"

Your input is invaluable and truly makes a difference in shaping the professional and personal aspirations of our students.

"

I want to thank each of you for your financial support and your gifts of time and talent. In addition to your generosity, many of you work to assist our students through mentoring programs, career development and other endeavors. Your input is invaluable and truly makes a difference in shaping the professional and personal aspirations of our students.

ARUN GANDHI DELIVERS DIVERSITY KEYNOTE Activist Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mohandas Gandhi, delivered the keynote address at the Ninth Annual Diversity Convocation in February. In his presentation, Lessons Learned from Grandfather: Nonviolence in a Violent World, Arun Gandhi delivered a personal reflection on his grandfather and examined religious, political and ideological differences affecting global citizens. Arun Gandhi grew up in apartheid South Africa. As a young boy, Gandhi was beaten up by black youths for not being black and by white youths because he was not white. Filled with rage, he subscribed to Charles Atlas bodybuilding magazines so he would have the strength to fight back. During an 18-month stay with his grandfather, he witnessed his powerful philosophy of nonviolence which shaped the foundation of Arun Gandhi’s life. In 1991, Gandhi and his late wife, Sunanda, founded the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence. It is located at the University of Rochester, New York. In 2007, he started the Gandhi Worldwide Education Institute to build educational and training centers for children living in extreme poverty. The Diversity Convocation was sponsored by the Ramapo College Board of Trustees, the Office of the President and the Diversity Action Committee. The Krame Center for Contemplative Studies and Mindful Living at Ramapo College was a co-sponsor of the visit.

U.S. VETERAN DISCUSSES AWARD-WINNING BOOK Phil Klay, author of Redeployment, discussed his writings at Ramapo College in January. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Klay served in Iraq’s Anbar Province as a public affairs officer. Redeployment takes readers to the front lines of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The New York Times described it as “the best thing written so far on what the war did to people’s souls.” The New Yorker called it “…a masterly collection of short stories about war and its psychological consequences.” His book won the National Book Award for Fiction last year. In addition, the National Book Foundation listed Klay among its '5 Under 35' honorees in 2014. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal, among other publications. After his discharge from the military, Klay earned a master of fine arts from Hunter College and also attended New York University’s Veterans Writing Workshop. The Salameno School of Humanities and Global Studies sponsored Klay’s visit.

SAVE THE DATE Wednesday, March 25 | Alumni Lounges SC-136/137/138 Judson Brewer, director of research at the Center for Mindfulness UMass Medical School, will deliver two presentations at Ramapo College. SOCIAL/POLITICAL WRITER SPEAKS AT RAMAPO Lola Adesioye, a prominent British political writer, commentator and activist, spoke at Ramapo College in February. In an address entitled Modern Black Britain and Its Parallels with the Contemporary Obama-Era African American Experience, she examined the experience of people of African descent in the United Kingdom with the African-American experience in the United States. The event was sponsored and funded by the Schomburg Visiting Scholar Program and coordinated by the African Ancestry Month Planning Committee. Adesioye discussed notions of race, the experience of black Britons in a shifting socio-political landscape and interactions with law enforcement and the justice system. She also met with students in two classes. Adesioye earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in social and political science from Cambridge University. Despite growing up in London, England, as the daughter of Nigerian immigrants, Adesioye always had an interest in African-American culture. At age 10, she read a book about the transatlantic slave trade, sparking her fascination with American history.

GRANTS AND AWARDS Several faculty members earned grants in 2014 to pursue their research efforts. FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS COLLEGE NEWS Condensed Statements Changes in Net Assets, Fiscal Years ended June 30, (dollars in thousands)

Ramapo College Ranked by U.S. News & World Report as sixth in the Best Regional Universities North category for public institutions, Ramapo College of New Jersey is sometimes viewed as a private college. This is, in part, due to its unique interdisciplinary academic structure, its size of approximately 6,000 students and its pastoral setting in the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains on the New Jersey/New York border. Established in 1969, Ramapo College offers bachelor’s degrees in the arts, business, humanities, social sciences and the sciences, as well as in professional studies, which include nursing and social work. In addition, Ramapo College offers courses leading to teacher certification at the elementary and secondary levels. The College also offers eight graduate programs as well as articulated programs with Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; New York Chiropractic College; New York University College of Dentistry; SUNY State College of Optometry; and New York College of Podiatric Medicine. The College’s financial report includes three basic financial statements: the Statements of Net Position; the Statements of Revenues, Expenses, and Changes in Net Position; and the Statements of Cash Flows which have been prepared in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America as promulgated by the Government Accounting Standards Board. These statements present the College’s operations on a consolidated basis and focus on assets, liabilities, revenues, expenses and cash flows on an entity-wide basis. Presented below are condensed versions of these statements. The full College financial statements, including footnotes, notes can be found on the College website at www.ramapo.edu/controller/financial-reports/

Economic Factors That Will Affect the Future The major components of Ramapo’s operating revenue have changed over time. State support, as a percentage of the total revenues, has been declining over the last several years. The state appropriation was flat again this year as it has been for the last several years. Operations at the College are negatively impacted by constrained state support. The state’s benefit contribution did increase but was offset by increased benefit costs. The College faces limited expense flexibility as the state controls salary and benefit negotiations for a majority of employees at the College. New Jersey continues to face challenging economic times, including a possible state pension underfunding. These economic factors may affect future appropriations to the College. Reduced appropriations in the future will place an increased burden on tuition and fees to fund the operating costs of the College. Enrollment is expected to grow modestly over the next few years. It is important that Ramapo continues to sustain strong operating cash flows in order to meet its future debt obligations. Ramapo will continue to seek new and enhanced revenue streams and operating efficiencies to maintain its ability to increase total net assets to meet the needs of its students. The College remains committed to its mission of serving the educational needs of New Jersey.

Ramapo College Foundation

Condensed Statements of Activities, Fiscal Years ended June 30,

The mission of the Ramapo College Foundation “is to provide resources that make the difference in Ramapo College of New Jersey’s quest for educational excellence.” The Foundation, established in 1971 as a nonprofit corporation, is a 501(c)(3) charitable institution. Its purposes include providing funds to Ramapo College for student scholarships, educational programs, faculty development and research, community programs, construction projects, capital needs and other College activities for which state funds may not be sufficient or available. The Foundation’s financial report includes three basic financial statements: the Statements of Net Assets, the Statements of Activities, and the Statements of Cash Flows which have been prepared in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America as promulgated by the Financial Accounting Standards Board. Presented below are condensed versions of these statements. The full Foundation financial statements including footnotes notes can be found on the College website: http://www.ramapo.edu/foundation/finreports/

Financial Highlights The Foundation’s financial position continues strong after two years of double-digit long-term investment returns, ending its 2014 fiscal year with an 18% return. This has led to a 156% growth in its endowment since 2009, even considering its 5% average spend rate, as compared to the average of 4.1% for all public institutions according to National Association of College and University Business Officers Commonfund Study of Endowments FY13 statistics. In addition, as of its 2014 fiscal year, the Foundation has surpassed its Capital Campaign goal of $50 million, by $2 million, and although the Campaign officially ended in December 2014, hopes are that that number will continue to rise.

Future Outlook Continued emphasis will be placed on endowment growth, planned giving legacy programs, securing significant capital and programmatic support to renovate academic facilities and increasing annual fund participation levels. The Foundation has finalized its five year Strategic Plan (2014-2018) aligning with the College’s Plan. Specifically, the Foundation will strive to increase its operational support, endowment corpus and grant revenues by 5% annually. Additionally the Foundation looks to bring in close to $7 million for capital projects with new money and pledge payments received over the next five years, to mirror the College’s growth plan. The Foundation is also pleased to announce that its Capital Campaign came to an official end in December 2014. This marks a significant achievement for the Foundation and all the supporters of the College and students alike. The Foundation’s most significant grant, under which it coordinates and provides the Meadowlands Environmental Commission’s educational outreach programs, is being reviewed and the Foundation is making changes to how it will run these programs starting in FY15. Although the revenue earned under this grant is spent as grant expense and does not significantly contribute to unrestricted revenues earned by the Foundation, the Foundation expects there to be a significant decrease in the grant revenue in the future and is taking steps to mitigate the impact.

GIVING BACK

Endowed scholarships create opportunities for Ramapo College students to pursue their studies and to achieve their dreams. Through their generosity, benefactors create a legacy and make a permanent impact on the lives of students and their families. In this issue of Ramapo College Magazine, two benefactors discuss their connection to Ramapo College and motivation for giving back to the College and students.

As I would tell any student today, perseverance is the key. You need to stay the course.

{

"

MARILYN J. CLARK '79 "I had a unique experience as a part-time evening and Saturday student at Ramapo College. There was a small group of adult students who got together for study groups before class. As adults who worked full-time and were returning to school, we were very serious in our studies and wanted to make the most of our time. It was not always easy. As I would tell any student today, perseverance is the key. You need to stay the course. Some days are more difficult than others. You have to be determined and not give up. I feel blessed that I am able to establish this scholarship fund for students. Education makes a tremendous difference in one’s life choice. It is the great equalizer. I am so grateful to Ramapo College for supporting me and providing me with an opportunity to earn my degree. Because of that experience, my world broadened in part because of my exposure to talented professors who were always willing to give of their time. If you needed extra help, all you had to do was ask.

The Marilyn J. Clark Scholarship Endowment was established in 2014. The scholarship benefits qualified students from single-parent households.

6

Ramapo College Magazine | Annual Report FY 2014

I believe young people from one-parent families have a special set of challenges in pursuing education, including the financial burden. As a mother who raised two sons (Walt '95 and William Jamros), I know how difficult it can be. That is why I chose to focus my efforts on providing scholarship support for men and women from this background."

I LEFT

RAMAPO

FEELING WELL EQUIPPED TO GO INTO THE REAL WORLD.

The Seminara Family Endowment Fund was established in 2014. The fund benefits qualified students pursuing careers in finance, economics or other business-related disciplines.

PETER SEMINARA '00 "I majored in economics at Ramapo. After attending a large state university outside of New Jersey for one year and feeling lost in the crowd, I wanted to move closer to home in a more intimate setting. I enjoyed the personal attention and access to professors and met some very good friends. I had internships at investment firms during all three years at Ramapo. The internships helped me to secure a job after graduation working at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter on the fixed income trading desk. I am currently a Senior Vice President and Private Wealth Advisor with Morgan Stanley. Because of the intimate class sizes, caring professors and student development resources available on campus, I left Ramapo feeling well equipped to go into the real world. I was able to compete aggressively in an industry filled with graduates from Ivy League and top nationally ranked universities. College is an important time. Students explore their interests and test their skills in the classroom and elsewhere. It is also the time when you begin to develop a network of individuals who in many cases are mentors to whom you turn for advice when considering career development and choices. I am grateful that my family is able to establish a scholarship fund. It is a privilege and a way to help others experience what I received at Ramapo. It made a difference for me, and I know that it continues to this day." > BY STEPHEN J. HUDIK www.ramapo.edu

HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

The Friends of Ramapo hosted "Judith Peck Sculpture: Empathy--A Retrospective Exhibit Celebrating Four Decades of Teaching Art at Ramapo College." An artist's talk and dessert reception with Professor Judith Peck took place in the Kresge Galleries of the Berrie Center in April. Taking a closer look are (L-R): Lily Gensch, Audrey Newman '93, Olivia Gensch, Al Gensch and Margaret Mullen Gensch.

Professor Emeritus of Art Judith Peck with "One Man in Memory of a Million." The statue commemorates the death of countless and nameless Jews who perished in the Holocaust. It is on permanent and prominent display in the Ramapo College Grove. The new bronze casting of Judith’s statue was made possible by a gift from a Holocaust survivor, Ms. Mannheimer-Lorber, mother of Associate Professor of Social Work Kim Lorber. The gift was in memory of Herbert Mannheimer, a leading liberal attorney who the Nazis disbarred and later murdered in Auschwitz. John R. Mannarino '12 Kevin M. Manz '14 Christine L. THE 2015 ANNUAL

Scholarship Dinner MONDAY, APRIL 13, 2015 Honoring scholarship benefactors and recipients. These scholarship awards are possible in part as a result of the 53% increase in the fair market value of our endowment over the last three years and the strong investment return last year of 18.3%. This increase in our endowment along with our donors' generous annual support allowed the Foundation to provide more than $440,000 this year in named scholarships.
