Deciding On The Right Dishwasher (NAPS)—If you’re done with doing dishes, you’re not alone. According to a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive, 21 percent of women cited washing the dishes as their least favorite household chore. Before deciding on a dishwasher, consider the following shopping tips from the Whirlpool Institute of Kitchen Science: • Load it up: If everyone had the same set of dishes, cookware and serveware, one dishwasher would fit all. But that is not the case. So take stock of your dishes before shopping to better judge if your dishes will sit comfortably in the racks. Most dishwashers also now come with holders to prevent silverware from “nesting,” so make sure your set fits the slots. • Check under the hood: Sort of. Most people don’t know the difference between filter- and disposal-based systems, so be sure to look at the bottom of the dishwasher, as the difference is significant. Filter-based systems, which use water filtration to separate food particles from the water washing your dishes, are generally quieter and more energy efficient—but they also require a periodic rinse of the filter. Disposal systems, which use a blade to chop particles and separate them from the water, do not require the same amount of maintenance, but can be louder and less efficient. • Do your homework: Re quest any information the salesperson may have on how the dishwasher stacks up to

the rest. Check the machine’s energy efficiency rating. These ratings change, so be sure to select a model with the best available rating. • Evaluate yourself: Those who are not inclined to spend quality time with their dishwasher’s owner’s manual can benefit from a model equipped with a sensor cycle. Sensor cycles will choose the best wash cycle for the load by detecting just how dirty the dishes are, and can help save energy. • Get in the zone: Spray zones are important when it comes to those dishes with hard, stuck-on food particles. Check the back of the washer, where the sprayers are, and ask if they’re targeted to specific areas. Targeted sprayers can get to caked-on baking dishes so you don’t have to prerinse or scrub them. Prerinsing can waste up to 20 gallons of water! Using a dishwasher doesn’t just save time; it also saves water. Hand-washing dishes can use 27 gallons of water vs. one cycle in a dishwasher that uses 3 gallons of water. Using a dishwasher doesn’t just save time; it also saves water.

A new mobile phone tool lets you photograph, match and preview paint colors on the go. With a free download of an easy-to-use and convenient tool now for Android and iPhone, you can match, coordinate and preview beautiful colors for all your paint projects. With a range of unique features, such as the capability to decorate a room image digitally with touch-and-tap technology and preview color on walls, trim and accents, the application lets you become your own color expert and act on whatever color inspires you in the moment. Creating a color palette for your home can be simple, fun and personally satisfying. A coordinated color palette unifies your space, creating an environment that is beautifully harmonious. Cool colors impart a calm, serene effect, while warm colors bring an invigorating, energizing feel to a room. Therefore, a room set aside for peace and quiet is enhanced with the calm and cool shades of green or blue. If, on the other hand, you want your space to be uplifting and high-spirited, try decorating with warm colors such as yellow or orange. Incorporating the color selection, coordination and preview features from ColorSmart by Behr online at behr.com, the ColorSmart by Behr Mobile application has many easy-to-use features for selecting the right color palette for you, including: • Explore Color—Browse over 2,000 colors by color families or color name or number. Once you find a shade you like, you can preview it in a room image. • Photo Match—Take a photo or select an existing photo. Tap on an area in the photo and the application will pull up the three

closest matching paint colors. • Preview Colors—Access interior and exterior images in a variety of styles to test your color choices on the walls, trims and accents. Zoom in to see details of the photo or remove a color and add another for the color combination you want. You can then share your color selections with friends and family by posting them on Twitter and Facebook. The color selections can also be saved to behr.com. • Favorites and More— Favorites lets you save favorite colors, coordinated palettes and room images. In addition, it has a handy paint calculator to help you figure out how much paint you’ll need and a store locator to provide directions to the nearest The Home Depot store. The ColorSmart by Behr Mobile application is available for Android and iPhone and is a free download in both the Android Market and Apple iTunes App Store. For more information about the application and how to use it, visit behr.com/colorsmartmobile. You can also “like” the paint company on facebook.com/behrpaint and follow it on twitter.com/behrpaint. Brighten Your Bathroom In A Weekend

(NAPS)—If you’re looking for a fun makeover project, the easiest room to redecorate may be your bathroom. It’s a small space, so giving it a fresh look makes for a great weekend project. It’s also the room most likely to need a makeover, as this high-traffic area is prone to stains caused by moisture from your shower and bath, as well as makeup and grooming products. By adding a fresh coat of paint, bathrooms can be transformed quickly and affordably. The natural place to start is by deciding on a color scheme. You may want to begin by selecting various color swatches or paint samples from the store or using online color coordination tools. Once you have the paint samples in hand, try them on the wall and note how they look during different times of the day. Erika Woelfel, director of color at Behr Paints, suggests you note how colors reflect the light. The bathroom is the first place you look at yourself every day, which is why she favors pink for bathrooms. “Peach, apricot and salmon pinks provide a warm, rosy background glow. They’re great to use in dressing or vanity areas as they enhance skin tones for daily grooming,” said Woelfel. “We all want to put our best foot forward each morning and color can help.” To keep it fresh, use white for the trim and fluffy white towels. Here are a few color schemes and themes to try: Keep It Classic: If your sense of style leans toward more traditional tastes, a classic bathroom may suit your aesthetic needs. Consider a light minty green, an ethereal white and a downy white, then accent with soft pops of color. Choose an eclectic collection of light fixtures and hardware. Make a Bold Statement: Go for all-out glamour with walls in aubergine, eggplant and lilac. Add black trim and onyx tiles to the floor. Brighten with white towels and linens. Go Tranquil: Use the soft colors of nature to whisk you away. Pale spring green

walls and luminous gray-green tiles evoke grass, while cloud-white accents, potted plants and natural wood add to the ambience. Dress the Room with Fabric: Fabric can add depth and texture to a design scheme. Fabric considerations include matching or coordinating shower curtains and window treatments, as well as colorful towels. To make towels even more distinctive, add ribbon banding for trim. Get a Handle on It: Sometimes, a room’s look is all in the details. If there are cabinets or drawers in your room, one easy way to spruce things up is to change the handles. A variety of decorative drawer pulls and handles can be incorporated into a decorating scheme. Follow up with glasses, trays and other accessories that fit into your scheme. And don’t be afraid to paint built-ins. Here are a few tips to help with your weekend bathroom makeover: • Use an online program like ColorSmart by Behr to select, match and coordinate color. You can also save your selections to a workbook and buy samples online at www.behr.com. • Pick up smaller brushes to reach corners, baseboards and hard-to-reach places and a roller for larger surface spaces. • Be sure to pick up tape and paper to cover fixtures, mirrors and countertops to keep those elements free of paint and keep clean-up easy. • Choose a paint that is well suited for bathrooms, like Behr Premium Plus Ultra Interior in a Semi-Gloss or Satin Enamel finish, available exclusively at The Home Depot. This paint and primer in one is great for bathrooms, with an easy-to-clean, durable, mildew resistant finish that helps protect against moisture and stains and provides improved hiding in fewer coats for a quicker re-do. For more information and inspiration ideas, visit Behr’s new blog penned by Woelfel at www.colorfullybehr.com. You may also “like” the paint company at www. facebook.com/behrpaint and follow it at www.twitter.com/behrpaint.

Help Protect Your Home From Mother Nature’s Wrath (NAPS)—Don’t let potentially damaging and expensive leaks throughout your home take your wallet by surprise. Instead, protect your home—and your budget—with a caulk that lasts. Silicone, which is durable and waterproof, will repair small gaps that can balloon into expensive repairs and seal miniscule unseen cracks that can elevate utility bills. Here’s how: 1. Find the Culprits: Finding leaks is as much damage control as it is home energy control. Rain and snow can seep in and affect insulation and electrical wiring, a lot of which runs through attics and in unfinished basements, and can mean pricey repair bills if damaged. So check attics, basements, gutters and roofs in addition to windows and doors. Visit Caulkandsave.com’s “where and how do I find the leaks?” for an interactive guide. 2. Choose a Caulk That Can Withstand Mother Nature: Not all caulks are created equal, so go beyond the advice to simply “seal gaps and cracks.” One hundred percent silicone caulk, like GE Silicone II Window & Door, stands up to Mother Nature for the long haul. Leaks frequently occur in and around homes in places prone to extreme temperature fluctuations, moisture, humidity and damaging UV rays. Impervious to these damaging conditions, silicone caulk remains permanently waterproof and won’t shrink or crack. In fact, 100 percent silicone remains unaffected by all weather and temperature conditions, so it provides long-lasting energy savings and seals money-zapping gaps and cracks. Conversely, degraded acrylic caulk can crack and crumble over time, leaving gaps for air and water to seep through. Those leaks can lead to water damage, mold growth and higher energy bills.

3. Get to Work: It’s best to work with caulk in abovefreezing temperatures and clear of snow or ice. First, clean the surface. Remove old caulk, dirt and loose particles with a caulk-removing tool or wire brush. Make sure the surface is dry. Next, apply painter’s tape to either side of the joint to create a straight edge. Prep the tube and seal. Cut the nozzle to the desired bead size. Pierce the inner seal with a stiff wire or similar object. Insert the cartridge into the caulking gun. Hold the caulking gun at a 45-degree angle and seal around spaces. Keep a steady, constant grip. Smooth the caulk seal. Use your finger or a wet caulk-smoothing tool within two to five minutes of application. Remove the painter’s tape immediately after smoothing caulk. Use mineral spirits to clean up. For step-by-step photos to guide you through the project, see www. caulkandsave.com. Acrylic caulk can shrink and crack over time, but silicone— such as GE Silicone II Window & Door—can protect for the long haul.

Now is the time to start looking for that home you have always dreamed about, stop dreaming and start doing. • • • •

Five Ways To Trick Out Your Tablet (NAPS)—If you’re like many Americans, you—or someone you love—bought or received a tablet as a gift recently. The tablet market is booming. Lighter than laptops and more powerful than smartphones, tablets are now the go-to device for anyone looking to take their music, entertainment and, begrudgingly, some work with them. According to a recent study from Infinite Research, Americans adoption of tablets—such as the iPad or Galaxy Tab—is happening at a faster pace than any other electronic device in history, including computers, game consoles and smartphones. In fact, a recent report from eMarketer projects that by 2014, nearly 90 million Americans will be using tablets monthly. And already, almost half of the respondents in a Google AdMob survey of tablet users said they use their tablet more often than their computer or laptop. This popularity is driving people to find ways to make using tablets easier and more convenient. To this end, tablet accessories can help take entertainment and content creation to the next level. Here are five fun ways to trick out your tablet: Type Up a Best Seller Tablets can be used for more than surfing the Web and reading books. With the array of wireless keyboards designed for tablets, heavy-duty typing is completely doable. Compact and wireless keyboards like the Logitech Keyboard Case for iPad 2 (also for Samsung Galaxy Tab) combine the luxury of typing on a comfortable surface within a protective case that also holds your tablet upright. Work and the Web, Smarter Touch-screen cursor control isn’t the best for everything, especially when working on something that requires more than simple pointing or clicking. In fact, a mouse is a must-have for any task that requires formatting text and images, or navigating the Web for any length of time. No longer just accessories for PCs, there are a few mouse options designed for tablets. Look for one that brings laser precision to interacting with the tablet, and Bluetooth wireless pairing will make it easy to use on the go. Beat Your Highest Score Strong graphic performance and processing speed make tablets a great tool for gamers—from the casual to the serious. If you want game-winning precision not afforded by touchscreen controls, attach the Logitech Joystick for iPad or iPad 2 for the familiar feel and responsiveness of a thumb-stick-style controller. Get Help in the Kitchen The kitchen is one place a tablet can be at the center of a domestic experience. Using an adjustable tablet stand, the chef can pull up and display an online recipe while being inspired by a favorite playlist, all at once. Set the Backyard BBQ to Music Bringing music to your backyard can be a hassle, often compromising selection or sound. Fireplace Inserts Save Energy And Money (NAPS)—Here’s an idea many homeowners may greet warmly: keeping hot air inside when it’s cold out. In many houses, the problem—surprisingly—comes from something you’d think would keep you warm: traditional openmasonry fireplaces. They just aren’t very efficient. Every minute they burn, these fireplaces can exhaust as much as 300 cubic feet of heated indoor air outside your home, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. That’s 18,000 cubic feet of heated air lost per hour. As the warm air leaves, cold air from windows, doors and other areas is drawn to the fireplace. This cools the house and forces the furnace to work harder to heat your entire home. Fortunately, there is a way to enjoy your fireplace without suffering from high energy bills and a drafty house. A Practical Upgrade Fireplace inserts fit directly into the opening of existing masonry-built fireplaces and offer enhanced heating performance, style and money-saving efficiency. Fireplace inserts come in numerous designs and fuel types. When evaluating gas fireplace inserts, a critical component to look for is Direct Vent technology. Such units have sealed fireboxes and venting that expel 100 percent of exhaust outside of the home—for clean, safe indoor air quality. One wood-burning insert made by Quadra-Fire is the Voyageur. It blends clean, eco-friendly heating with distinctive cast-iron styling. A robust 46,000 BTU heating capacity heats up to 2,400 square feet and a single load of wood can efficiently burn for up to 12 hours. An efficient gas fireplace insert is the Heat & Glo Escape I35. It features traditional wood-burning looks through a convenient gas platform. A molded FireBrick ceramic interior radiates 25 percent more heat than metal fireboxes, and an intermittent pilot system conserves energy. There’s a battery backup system, so it works even during a power outage. “These days, homeowners are seeking more and more ways to increase their home value,” said Diane UtzmanO’Neill of Hearth & Home Technologies, a leading hearth product manufacturer. “Inserts can lower heating costs and revive interior designs.” Many wood-burning inserts are EPA certified. These ap pliances save money and meet stringent environmental standards. Pellet-burning inserts are also known for extremely clean and efficient operation. (NAPS)—Every home has a central gathering space where people spend most of their time. This area could be a kitchen, a living room or even the garage—as long as the rooms are organized and functional. But that’s not always the case. For example, the garage is useful for a variety of purposes, but too often ends up being the dumping ground for items that do not fit in the rest of the home. Thankfully, today’s organizational tools can help provide order to a usually chaotic room and help make it functional again. According to Leslie Howard, a member of the National Association of Professional Organizers and owner of Indianapolis-based Streamline by Design, an organizational system such as Gladiator GarageWorks can help clients transform their garage into a multiuse area. “With the right organizational tools, any homeowner can turn their disorganized space into an automobile haven, a gardener’s sanctuary or even the sports fanatic’s dream locker room,” says Howard. To get started, she recommends these simple tips: • To make the situation less stressful, allow yourself time to tackle the project. • Sort items in the garage into separate categories; e.g., sports equipment, seasonal items, tools, etc. • Donate or recycle broken or unused items. • Look for wasted space and create a plan of how the room will look, making sure to measure each area to maximize the use of the space. • Choose an organizational system like Gladiator® GarageWorks, which offers versatility and the ability to grow as your needs change. After the system installation: • Place items most frequently used in locations that are easily accessible and within reach. • Create a habit of putting things away within a timely manner in its appropriate space to maintain organization. Enjoy your newly transformed space! Once your garage is complete, you can apply the tips above for any room in your home or office. A recent study conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Whirlpool Corporation found that for 23 percent of U.S. adults, the bedroom is the space that gathers the most clutter, compared with only 14 percent who said the garage.* With just a little imagination, you can easily use these tips throughout the house to fit your family’s functionality needs and organizational goals.

Today’s organizational tools can help provide order to a chaotic room.

Don’t Just Respond To Power Outages, Prevent Them

(NAPS)—Some 30 million Americans suffer through exten ded power outages a year and that number is expected to rise—but you don’t have to be among them. While storms, an aging electrical grid and freak occurrences can all contribute to significant power outages, getting a backup generator can make the difference for you. An Answer It’s all well and good to have some extra batteries put aside but it’s even better to not need them in the first place. The answer, many families have found, is a stationary home backup generator that can keep the power running during and after a storm. A stationary backup generator connects to a home’s existing natural gas or LP fuel supply, automatically turns on after the electrical power goes out and provides power to the home until the electrical grid returns. A stationary generator isn’t just part of an emergency preparedness kit—it can actually help prevent an emergency. For example, homeowners in one coastal Maryland community weathered Hurricane Irene without any problems. Every home in the Chesapeake Village subdivision was built with an attached Generac standby generator. While thousands of other residents along the Chesapeake Bay faced weeklong power outages, life for Chesapeake Village homeowners continued as usual. “We had a lot of wind, a lot of rain, a lot of debris flying. But when the electricity went out our generator kicked in right away,” Chesapeake Village homeowner Stephanie Patterson said. “This was my first experience with a generator, and it’s a relief to have it. We kept our refrigerator hooked up, our lights on and with two small kids, it was great just to have some extra amenities.” Chesapeake Village resident Terri Blackwell said knowing she would not lose power during storms was a selling point when she and her husband were house hunting. Power isn’t just a luxury for many people with electronic medical devices, it’s a necessity. In addition, many work from home or remotely and not having power is bad for their economy and the nation’s. Fortunately, you can get a Generac power system with an output from 7 kilowatts to 60 kilowatts through a broad network of independent dealers, retailers and wholesalers. Learn More For further information, visit www.Generac.com, call (888) 436-3722, follow the company on Twitter@generacpowersys or become a fan on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ generacpowersystems. For most places, power outages aren’t a matter of “if” but of “when.”

The Real Estate Guide Healthy, Money-Smart, Sustainable Living

(NAPS)—Small decisions can make a big difference over time on your carbon footprint, and some of the “greenest” decisions you can make begin at home. Fortunately, there are several easy, affordable ways to lead a greener lifestyle at home. 1. Get some fresh air. From the cleaning supplies you use to the off-gassing of new furniture, carpet and paint, your home carries airborne toxins that can cause health problems if they become trapped and increase in density. Counteract this by bringing fresh air inside. Your green action: Intermittently open windows on opposite sides of a house to encourage a cross-breeze. In a two-story house, open a window downstairs and a window upstairs. As warm air rises, it will exit the top-floor window. In places like kitchens and bathrooms, where moisture can accumulate and trigger mold growth if left unaddressed, spot ventilation can be achieved with exhaust fans. It’s also important in rooms with gas appliances to offset carbon monoxide. Exhaust fans can be noisy. Look for those rated 2.0 sones or less. 2. You hold the power. Being money smart may mean rethinking the way you use gas and electricity in the home. Your green action: Take care of your appliances for maximum energy efficiency. Plugged-in appliances consume energy even when they are turned off or in standby mode. This phantom load, particularly from power adapters, computers and TVs, can account for as much as 10 percent of your home’s energy consumption. Place power strips throughout the house and shut down power at the outlet versus on the appliance. Also, make sure your appliances are operating at maximum efficiency. Clean your dryer’s lint trap after every load and scrub it with an old toothbrush once a month to get rid of the film left behind by dryer sheets. Clean your refrigerator coils, which can accumulate dust, at least once a year. Pull the refrigerator away from the wall and unplug it. Then remove the cover panel on the back to expose the coils and use a long-handled brush or handheld vacuum to remove dust. 3. Be water wise. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, a family of four in the United States uses about 400 gallons of water daily—70 percent of which is for indoor use. Your green action: Install low-flow plumbing fixtures. Highefficiency clothes washers and dishwashers are ideal but they can be expensive. An alternative is installing low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators. A low-flow showerhead can save a household up to 2,300 gallons of water a year. A faucet aerator attaches to the end of a faucet and slows the water flow, while adding air to maintain water pressure. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends aerators with a maximum flow rate of one gallon per minute.
