Tools And Tricks To Tackle Tough, Cold Weather Yard Work Josh Fiscus

(NAPS)—The steps you take now to clean up your yard and put it to bed for the next few months can set the tone for a more productive spring. Helpful Hints Try these tips for an easier and greener yard cleanup: • Remove dead leaves and continue to trim and mow your lawn. Trimming grass at a slightly lower level and raking up fallen leaves prevent matting under debris and snow. • Ready your lawn for next year. Prevent weeds by seeding bare patches, but give seed enough time to establish itself before really cold weather sets in. Now can also be the right time to fertilize to give your lawn the nutrients it’ll need to thrive next spring. • Trim dead or diseased limbs. Storm-damaged or lifeless branches can endanger your home and property. Protect trees and shrubs from further
damage by using a chain saw to cut cracked, broken, loose or diseased limbs close to the trunk or nearest branch. A cordless pole saw is another option to safely trim high branches without a ladder. • Trim those hedges. Trimming hedges can help them keep their shape until they go dormant. Trim hedge sides at a slight angle, with the widest part close to ground level and tapering slightly at the tip. This provides maximum sunlight and reduces heavy hedges in the event of storms and wind damage. • Prepare your tools. Clean, sharp and quality tools make it easier to tackle tough yard tasks. Clean caked dirt and debris from shovels and rakes and sharpen chain saws, pole saws and hedge trimmers. Consider new tools that make yard work easier. For example, there’s a new wave of lithium-ion battery– powered tools that make tackling yard work easier than ever. Homeowners no longer have to sacrifice power and convenience with new cordless tools, such as OREGON’s 40V MAX Cordless Tool Systems. They have all the performance of gas-powered tools, minus the hassles, and, because there’s no fuel to spill or toxic emissions, battery-powered tools are the environmentally friendly landscaping choice.

Rent the equipment. Keep the advice.
(NAPS)—When it comes to giving your home natural warmth and beauty, few things compare to wood—and wood is surprisingly flexible when it comes to color. Whether you’re refinishing your floors or cabinets, restoring a fine piece of furniture or creating a new look distressing an existing piece, wood stain can enhance the beauty of the wood and add to your style. From traditional colors such as walnut or oak, to trendy espresso or weathered gray, you can choose from a variety of wood stains or create your own custom colors by mixing stains. The experts at the Minwax Company have tips to help: • Each species of wood accepts stain differently. A dark walnut stain will look different on pine than on cherry. Test the stain on an inconspicuous area of the wood first to see the true color. • Use a pre-stain wood conditioner to prevent streaks and blotches and ensure the wood absorbs the stain evenly. • For beautiful, even color, thoroughly stir—not shake—the can to distribute pigments that may have settled on the bottom. • If you create a custom color, measure each shade carefully and write it down so you can recreate it. • For an antique or distressed look, layer lighter and darker stain colors. Once the stain has dried, lightly sand away the top layer in different spots and then protect the piece with a clear finish. See the Minwax Pinterest board “Distressed Furniture Projects” for more information.

Getting The Most Out Of A Kitchen Remodel
by James Young (NAPS)—According to the U.S. Census Bureau, homeowners spent $130 billion on remodeling projects last year. If you hope to join them anytime soon, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind. After all, a kitchen remodel can give you one of the best returns on investment as long as you know where to save and where to spend. I help homeowners who dislike their kitchens evaluate all their options, from cabinets to countertops. Here are a few tips for a kitchen renovation that’s worth the time and investment. • Play with color. You spend a lot of time in the kitchen and you want it to be an inviting, comfortable place. One way you can really spice things up and show your true personality is with paint. Go bold or lighten things up with your favorite wall color; it’s really up to you and your personal style. It’s also one of the most inexpensive things to change down the road, so don’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone or experiment with the latest color trends. • Mix and match materials. Combining materials of different textures—such as stainless steel, concrete and reclaimed wood—adds warmth and visual interest. Invest in a marble slab for baking prep and a coordinating laminate or solid surfacing on other surfaces. This is your kitchen; get creative. • Make a statement with countertops. One place you can make a big statement is with countertops. The amount you spend on this item should account for only around 10 percent of your kitchen renovation budget. For this reason, I prefer working with Formica® brand laminate. Through the latest design and print technologies, you can get the look of granite and marble without breaking your budget. For example, the 180fx® line of laminates captures the true scale and color variation of exotic, natural surfaces but at a fraction of the cost. • Update your cabinets. While this can be a pricey endeavor, new cabinets can completely transform the look of your kitchen. No budget to replace them completely? You can create a unique look by adding laminate to the fronts of cabinet doors and drawers. Even more simple: Update them with a coat of paint, add new hardware and you’ll be all set. For more tips on renovating and getting the best bang for your buck, visit the Knowledge section at www.formica. com. • Mr. Young is a licensed contractor, electrician and TV host.

What To Know About Winter Storm Preparedness
(NAPS)—Many homeowners overlook one of the most important things to prepare for when the holiday season rolls around— winter storms. Experts believe homeowners are unprepared for winter storms, putting their families and their home in danger. So while you’re decking the halls for the season, make sure you take the following into consideration and ensure your home is both merry and safe. Major Dangers Associated with Winter Storms Homeowners can face major dangers when winter weather rolls around, including damage from the weight of ice, snow and sleet. In the case of major snowstorms, families can even be trapped in their homes due to blocked or frozen entryways. Cracked or burst water pipes connected to anything from steam and hot water heating to a fire-protection system can be extremely costly. Even after the storm, melting snow can cause major flooding. Tips to Winterize and Protect Your Home Though the list of winter weather dangers runs long, there are 10 easy steps that can ease or prevent these issues, all while creating a safer home environment during emergencies. 1. Install weather stripping. 2. Have your furnace/heating system serviced at the beginning of each season to ensure it runs properly, and have the filters changed. 3. Move furniture away from vents. 4. Add rock salt and sand to emergency kits to help melt ice on walkways. 5. Install roof-heating cables to prevent ice dams on roofs and gutters. 6. Insulate pipes. 7. Place a cover over attic stairs. 8. Insulate outlets with gasket covers. 9. Invest in an automatic home standby generator, such as those from Generac, that automatically provides power for heat and electricity when there is a power outage. They turn on as soon as the power goes out and stay on until utility power is restored. 10. If you have extra money in your budget, go for attic insulation, which can save as much as 30 percent on heating costs. As a leader in power equipment serving residential, light commercial, industrial and construction markets, Generac’s products are available through a broad network of independent dealers, retailers, wholesalers and equipment rental companies. Basic winterizing for a home can be done for less than $200, but by investing in installations like attic insulation and a Generac home standby generator, you get the best level of protection from winter storms.

Hints To Help You Get The Sleep You Need
(NAPS)—Here’s an eye-opening statistic: According to the National Institutes of Health, adults need seven to eight hours of sleep a night, but nearly 30 percent are getting six or less. Five Steps To Better Sleep If you’re ever among them, consider these five tips: 1. Try to go to bed at the same time each night and rise at the same time each morning. 2. Avoid large meals before bed. 3. Avoid caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime. 4. Avoid nicotine. 5. Get a mattress with the right degree of firmness for you. For example, a soft mattress is for sleepers who prefer to feel it hug them in a supportive embrace but not let them sink in too much. Choose soft if you: • Sleep on your side and sometimes your back • Like to feel enveloped in your bed and linens • Have trouble with your arms falling asleep before you do. The standard comfort level used in the finest hotels is luxury firm. This balances cushioning and contouring support to ensure proper spinal alignment. Choose luxury firm if you: • Sleep on your side, back or stomach • Switch sleeping positions often in the night. Firm is for sleepers who prefer an initial plushness quickly followed by firm support. Choose firm if you: • Sleep on your back or stomach • Prefer a mattress that you float on top of instead of sink into • Have been told by your doctor to sleep on a firm mattress. Finding A Quality Mattress Whatever degree of firmness you like, you want your mattress to be top quality. Look for higher density of nontoxic foams and dual innerspring construction, which prevents sagging. In the case of memory foam mattresses, look for higher weight and density and nontoxic foams. Focus only on a memory foam mattress that allows for the most efficient air circulation within the mattress. Memory foam mattresses are a rising choice with consumers, as they offer the elimination of pressure points or discomfort that can contribute to the “tossing and turning at night” to find a comfortable sleep position. A well-handcrafted memory foam mattress also eliminates “motion transfer,” the annoying transfer of motion from one side of the bed to the other that can come from sleeping next to a restless sleeper. Also look for coil-on-coil construction. The lower coil unit should offer a connected, hourglass-shaped, steel support base while the top coil unit features an individually wrapped, pocketed coil system that contours and responds to your body, eliminating most motion transfer. As for where to get a good mattress, a study by the Research Triangle Institute may help. It found many people feel “rushed” by in-store salespeople. As a result, online mattress purchasing is on the rise. If you go that route, look for a mattress that’s delivered and set up in your home. A boxed compressed mattress may not recover to full size and, while some manufacturers fold mattresses for home delivery, a high-quality mattress should not be able to be rolled up. Make sure the manufacturer uses top-quality foams and that the company is mandated to follow proper guidelines. Nonmandated foams from other countries can contain dangerous carcinogens, linked to a variety of health concerns. Make sure the manufacturer offers no restocking fees and a true return policy where you can get a full and prompt refund of the purchase price.

Afternoon Project
(NAPS)—The next time you’re looking to instantly transform a piece of wood furniture or your kitchen cabinets, try a one-step stain and clear finish product to change the look and color of your wooden piece. You can update a tired room by making over one item without removing its existing finish or replacing the furniture. Consider a rich dark wood tone or beautiful red tone to refresh a family treasure. Whether it’s a redo for an entryway table, new life for a family heirloom or sprucing up kitchen cabinets, the project is easier and faster to accomplish with a one-step product. For a beautiful finish: • Test to see whether your wood has a polyurethane finish on it; if it does, give it a light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper and remove sanding dust. • Using a natural-bristle brush, apply a one-step product such as Minwax PolyShades according to its application instructions. It’s available in 13 colors ranging from the light wood tones of Honey Pine or Classic Oak to the deep, rich colors of Espresso or Bombay Mahogany. • Apply a thin, even coat. To deepen the color, a second or third coat can be applied. • For a dramatic change, choose a darker color than your original finish to really see the difference. For more inspiration, visit www.minwax.com to see videos on the color transformation possibilities.
Choose Spray Foam For Lower Energy Bills And A Cozier Home This Winter
(NAPS)—With the chill of winter settled in across much of the country, keeping homes warm while also maintaining manageable energy bills is a major concern for homeowners. Installing spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation may ease these concerns. SPF offers a continuous seal for your home that in addition to providing a layer of insulation can help prevent drafts and offers improved control of indoor temperatures. It is so effective because it is applied as a liquid and then expands into foam insulation and air sealant, which keeps cold air out by sealing cracks, seams and joints. Because of added insulation and less heat loss due to drafts and cracks, less energy may be needed for heating during the cold winter months. Other benefits of SPF insulation include: • By reducing air leaks, SPF can improve moisture control to help reduce mold and mildew formation. • Sealing gaps with SPF provides a barrier to the exterior and helps keep pollen and dust outside. • SPF insulation in walls and attics can help minimize noise by reducing both high- and low-frequency noise. It is always recommended to hire a professional installer when using SPF to insulate and air-seal exterior walls, attics, crawl spaces and basements. To learn more about SPF’s benefits, visit www.whysprayfoam.org.

Simple Safety Tips
(NAPS)—Millions of Americans enjoy the unmatched comfort of propane-powered appliances for space heating, water heating, cooking and clothes drying. To help them stay safe and comfortable in cold weather, the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) offers some advice. “Safety is extremely important to the propane industry,” PERC President and CEO Roy Willis says. “We’ve compiled a checklist that homeowners can follow to put them at ease.” • Make sure you have an adequate propane supply. Call for a delivery when your propane tank is 30 percent full. Doing so gives your propane provider time to reach you when roads are bad or demand for propane is high. • Mark your propane tank. Use a flag, pole or stake higher than the average snow cover depth. The marker will help you avoid plowing into or shoveling snow on top of your tank in case of a heavy snowfall. • Consider installing UL-listed propane gas detectors and carbon monoxide detectors for additional security. Always follow the manufacturer instructions for installation, location and maintenance. • Create an emergency preparedness plan. Frequently review the plan with all household members and make sure to post the phone numbers for your propane provider and local emergency services in an accessible place. • Prepare a disaster supply kit. It’s important to be prepared in the case of an emergency by creating a kit with several days’ worth of water and canned foods, a can opener, extra clothes and blankets, flashlights and batteries. Include a battery-powered NOAA weather radio to stay informed as conditions change. • Consider having a propane-powered generator installed. When other power sources fail, a propane-powered generator can keep your home operating without interruption. According to Willis, another step that propane customers should take is to build a strong relationship with their local propane provider. “Weather is unpredictable,” Willis says. “Your propane provider can help you put together a plan to make sure that you have the energy you and your family need when you need it.” For more information on propane and tips, visit www.propanecomfort.com.

Cost-Saving Winter Preparedness Tips Can Keep Your Family Safe And Warm (NAPS)—There are several easy and cost-effective ways that homeowners can winterize their homes this storm season. Generac Power Systems offers six easy steps that will save you money while keeping your family and home safe during the long and brutal winter storm season. Tips to Keep Your Home Safe and Your Energy Bill Down Though there are many things that homeowners can do to keep their homes safe and their energy bills down this winter, Generac recommends starting with these: Top Off Your Attic Insulation—A high percentage of heat loss occurs through poorly insulated roofs. Make sure your attic is insulated with the minimum R-value for your climate (up to R-49 for Northern states). Also, check the rim joist areas above the foundation walls, and plug any gaps with fiberglass insulation. Dial Down the Thermostat—Most people can live comfortably with a temperature around 68 degrees. Setting it lower than that when you’re away or asleep will also save on energy. Consider purchasing a programmable thermostat that will lower the temperature automatically during off-peak times. Replace or Insulate Windows—Consider replacing old windows with energy-efficient ones, or put up window-insulating kits. The clear plastic film can reduce drafts, saving energy and avoiding the costs of window replacement. Fill Gaps with Caulk Sealants—Replace old caulk joints around your window and door trim (both inside and outside) that can shrink and leak over time. Use a spray foam sealant to fill in the gaps left around pipes, wires, TV cables or bath and dryer vents. Get an Energy Audit—Most local utilities can arrange a home energy audit to pinpoint where to focus your winterizing efforts. Thermal-imaging cameras, which use infrared technology to show where heat is escaping the house, are available to rent in many areas, so try one out before winterizing to know exactly what needs to be done. Install a Source of Backup Power—Because power outages are also a concern during winter storm season, FEMA recommends investing in a source of backup power, like an automatic home standby generator from Generac, that automatically provides power for heat and electricity when there is a power outage. Automatic home backup generators turn on as soon as the power goes out and stay on until utility power is restored. That means homeowners won’t lose money on holiday food costs if the refrigerator won’t work during a power outage. And homeowners can still work remotely, even when the power is out, plus families won’t have to relocate to a hotel. Learn More For more facts and advice on how to stay safe and warm this winter storm season, visit www.generac.com/be-prepared/preparefor-high-winter-storms or call 888-GENERAC.

(NAPS)—Here’s health news you should find easy to swallow: Whether you’re working, traveling, playing sports or just relaxing, it’s important to stay hydrated regardless of the season. Making up more than two-thirds of the weight of the human body, water is critical to keep the body’s cells and organs functioning properly. Keeping your body hydrated, says the American Heart Association, helps the heart pump blood more easily through the blood vessels to the muscles and helps the muscles remove waste so that they can work efficiently. As you work, play and exercise, here are six questions to ask yourself to ensure you and your family are staying regularly hydrated: 1. How much water should I drink each day? • Recommendations for water intake vary by person but wellness experts generally agree that drinking 6 to 8 eight-ounce glasses of water each day is a healthy goal. Individuals who exercise frequently and pregnant women should increase their intake. 2. Sugary drinks seem to quench my thirst as much as water. Is one better than the other? • Under most circumstances, water is the best source of fluid to keep the body hydrated. Caffeinated beverages can cause you to actually lose more fluids and sugary drinks can be hard on the stomach. It’s best to stick to water when trying to stay hydrated. 3. What else can I do to stay well hydrated? • Foods such as fruits and vegetables that contain a high percentage of water can help supplement your intake. Try tomatoes, cucumbers, celery, watermelon and strawberries. 4. I have trouble remembering to drink water. What should I do? • Add drinking a glass of water or reusable water bottle of water to your daily routine. For example, drink a glass of water after you wake up or while watching your favorite show. Drinking water before a meal can help you feel fuller faster and perhaps prevent overeating. 5. How can I be sure my water is pure? • To help reduce contaminants that may be in your tap water and provide filtered drinking water for your family, you can get a water filtration system. For example, 3M offers a wide range of filtration products, some of which address pesticides, nitrates, arsenic and other contaminants that may be found in water. 6. Where can I learn more? • Visit www.3mwater.com/ yesIwanta3MWaterSolution and www.facebook. com/3MWaterDealer.

Tips On Starting A More Nutritious Lifestyle (NAPS)—A growing number of men are enjoying a lifestyle that focuses on a diet built around nutritious, whole foods. Here are some tips to help you get started. • Go with fresh vegetables when possible. They tend to be full of vitamins and low in calories. As a bonus, they can help you meet your daily fiber target. • Keep your alcohol intake moderate. Too much alcohol can mean added sugar and filling your liver with toxins. For men, limit your intake to two drinks a day. • Make your grains whole grains. Eating three or more servings of whole grains each day can help you achieve a healthy diet. Also, when possible, choose brown rice over white rice. • Try eating five to six small meals throughout the day. This helps to prevent you from skipping meals and overeating. It also supports steady energy levels. Many find the best way to do this is with three main meals and three substantial snacks. • Don’t forget exercise and rest. According to the Centers for Disease Control, adults ages 18 and over (including older adults) need at least 2½ hours of moderate aerobic activity each week and muscle-strengthening exercises twice a week. Quality sleep—seven to eight hours a night for adults—is also important. It aids in the ability to process information, restore your body’s strength and repair muscles. • Snack smart. Don’t overlook convenience as a factor when it comes to constructing a healthy diet. Foods or products that contribute the nutrients needed and are easy and enjoyable to consume have a better chance of being part of a man’s diet over the long haul. For example, there is a line of food bars called LÄRABAR made with “whole food” ingredients such as nuts and dried fruit and seasoned with spices. The Original Fruit & Nut Bar™ contains no more than nine ingredients and no trans fats or preservatives. The ingredients in the “Apple Pie” bar consist of dates, almonds, unsweetened apples, walnuts, raisins and cinnamon. Plus, the bars come in a wide variety of flavors— from Blueberry Muffin to Peanut Butter Cookie or Chocolate Coconut Chew to Key Lime Pie—so there is something to satisfy just about any taste. Training Young People To Save Lives (NAPS)—A middle-school student who has been trained can save a life when someone needs CPR. That’s the word from the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Ross Dress For Less stores. Ross is supporting AHA’s efforts to help save more lives in all communities by providing free CPR training resources to public schools in lower-income areas. Ross and its customers have raised funds to train thousands of 7th and 8th grade students in lifesaving CPR across the U.S. through its Help a Hero program supporting CPR in Schools. The American Heart Association’s goal is to pair each Ross Dress for Less store with a nearby public school that has at least 50 percent of its students receiving free or reduced-cost lunch. More than 1,100 schools in the U.S. will receive a CPR in Schools Training Kit, teaching materials to implement the program and a school-based report card at the end of the year that shows how many students were trained. Teachers also have access to AHA resources, volunteer mentors and CPR in Schools staff throughout the program. Learning To Save Lives Is Fun Montross Middle School in Westmoreland County, Va. is one of the schools to benefit from the grant program, with teachers recently training more than 200 girls and boys with an AHA CPR in Schools Training Kit. In only 30 minutes, students learned lifesaving Hands-Only CPR. Cyndie Smith, the teacher who implemented the program during the students’ health/PE class, said the equipment was easy to use and well suited for her middle school students. “CPR in Schools is awesome! This is a dynamic, fun and easy-to-use CPR program that my middle-school students loved,” Smith said. She added that she was delighted and impressed by the quality and quantity of the equipment. Her students liked the program so much, said Smith, that they wanted to share it with their parents at a studenttaught workshop for parents during a monthly Parent and Family Organization meeting. “We sincerely thank the AHA and Ross stores for choosing Montross Middle School to receive the CPR in Schools training kit. We’re so fortunate that our students had the opportunity to work with this exceptional program and receive this valuable training,” Smith said. To learn more about AHA’s CPR in Schools initiatives, call 1-877-AHA4CPR or visit www.heart.org/CPRinSchools.

Expert Advice on Enticing Kids to Eat Their Fruits and Vegetables (NAPS)—As many parents know, kids can be picky eaters. And according to a recent study, moms are concerned that their kids aren’t eating enough fruits and vegetables. “We found that moms understand the health benefits of fruits and vegetables but struggle to get their family to eat them,” said Elizabeth Pivonka, Ph.D., RD, president and CEO, Produce for Better Health Foundation. “Today, Americans are currently eating less than half of the recommended cups of fruits and vegetables each day.” To better understand the situation, the Produce for Better Health Foundation conducted its annual research on “Moms’ Attitudes and Beliefs Related to Fruit & Vegetable Consumption.” The study found: • Ninety percent agree that a diet that includes fruits and vegetables may help their child avoid obesity. • Ninety percent agree that a diet with more fruits and vegetables promotes their family’s overall health and may prevent disease, now and in the future. • Ninety percent agree that a diet that includes fruits and vegetables may help promote well-being of mind and body. • Eighty-nine percent agree that more fruits and vegetables plus more physical activity means the family can be at its best. There’s been a steady improvement over time in the level of ease moms reported regarding their ability to access fruits and vegetables for their families at restaurants and quick-service restaurants. Setting out a fruit bowl, having vegetables cut up and ready to eat in the refrigerator, and finding ways to hide produce in other foods are some of the ways to get more fruits and vegetables into a family’s diet. The research also found that kids tend to eat more produce when they are involved in the growing, selecting and preparing of food. To get kids more involved, Pivonka provided these tips: 1. Let kids get involved in planning meals for the week and challenge them to find ways to make sure a fruit and vegetable are included in each meal. Remember, canned, frozen and dried fruits or vegetables, in addition to fresh, are all great options! 2. Get kids involved in using produce to make juices or smoothies. It can be a fun activity for kids to use a blender or juicer to show them there are other ways to eat your fruits and vegetables. 3. Teach kids about produce that’s in season and how to select the best produce. Take them to a farmer’s market to talk with growers. This also provides a great opportunity to try new produce they didn’t know they enjoyed. 4. Starting a backyard garden can be a great way to get kids interested and involved. Monsanto, through its Seminis Home Garden division, is working to make growing backyard produce more accessible for busy families by creating seed varieties that are easy to grow. Families looking for ways to incorporate more fruits and vegetables in their meals can go to www.morematters.org to find delicious recipes and additional tips.

Creating Your Own Video Just Got Easier (NAPS)—A company known for its award-winning digital multimedia solutions is making it easier to put a high-tech spin on keeping in touch with friends and family. Nero has introduced video-editing software for the home—Nero 2015. It’s designed to help users create their first video in just a few minutes—complete with music, sound effects and creative transitions— and upload it to YouTube or send it via e-mail. Thanks to the software, the process is pretty straightforward and makes it easy to send your video updates to friends and family. The Process • Plug in your point-and-shoot camera or camcorder. Go to “Import from AVCHD” and “Camera.” You can also import photos and videos directly from your photo folder in the event that you’ve already copied it over from your camera or smartphone. • Next, arrange the still photos and videos in a way that tells a story. Then add effects for that creative touch—such as slow motion, pan and zoom or enhanced brightness. The good news is that thanks to the software, this process doesn’t require a lot of high-tech experience. If you can “cut and paste” or “drag and click,” you can master the steps required to create your video. • Once you have arranged your files, you’re ready to add a soundtrack. Again, if you can drag and click an audio file, such as MP3, OGG or WAV, you can add music. • Distribution of the final product is just as easy. Simply export your movie to the Web via YouTube, into a smartphone-compatible format or burn it straight to DVD/Blu-ray. Another option is to upload your video to a cloud-based file transfer service, such as Nero’s free online drive, and share it with your family via e-mail in just a few seconds. This transfer service, Nero SendIt, is a new component of the company’s backup service. That service allows users to back up 5 GB (free) or unlimited data with a paid subscription from PCs, Android, iOS and Windows Phone devices. To learn more, visit the website at www.nero.com.
