Tips To Beat The Heat
(NAPS)—Here’s eye-opening information: Whether you get enough sleep can affect your mood, your weight, even your heart health. Fortunately, there are things you can do to improve your chances of getting a good night’s sleep. Summer heat and additional hours of sunlight can take a toll on our sleep quality. In fact, a recent Sleep Number survey revealed that 37 percent of people struggle to catch restorative sleep during the summer months—more than any other season. “For example,” said Pete Bils, Vice President of Sleep Innovation and Research at Sleep Number, “in order to fall asleep, the normal sleep cycle requires our body temperature to drop, and the excess body heat we release is absorbed by our bedroom and mattress. If the room is too hot or the bedding isn’t breathable, the heat will be trapped next to us— making it difficult to get quality sleep.” Bils offers the following tips to help people get great sleep: Excessive temperatures and humidity disrupt sleep • The optimal sleeping temperature is 65 degrees Fahrenheit with 65 percent humidity. So use a fan or a lightweight blanket during the summer, or adjust your thermostat to maintain a more comfortable sleeping temperature. • Body heat is released through your feet, head and hands, so keep them uncovered. • Go to bed with damp hair. As the water evaporates, it creates a cooling effect. Light is the most powerful influence on your sleep schedule • The increase in daylight hours tends to delay bedtime, pushing people to get less shut-eye than they need. Use lightblocking blinds or curtains or wear an eye mask at night to help you fall asleep. • About an hour before bed, don’t expose yourself to bright lights or screens (overhead lighting, television, phone, etc.). The natural sleep process, the secretion of melatonin, begins when exposed to dim light. Maintain constant sleep and workout schedules • Avoid the tendency to stay up late and sleep in during vacation. Altering your sleep schedule midweek actually creates jet lag-like symptoms, which impact your motor skills, concentration, mood and health. Do your best to maintain a consistent sleep schedule, even while traveling, seven days a week. • Don’t exercise too late in the evening in order to allow enough time for the body temperature to cool down before bedtime. • Find bedding that works for couples who can’t agree on warmth. Check out Sleep Number’s exclusive In Balance bedding collection items, featuring Outlast temperaturebalancing material, proven to wick moisture and draw excess heat away from the body so sleepers stay at a comfortable temperature all night long. Sleep Number utilizes the material, originally developed for NASA, in a variety of bedding products including sheets, blankets, duvets, comfort layers, mattress pads and its Innovation-series line of beds. Tips For Decorating With Stronger Colors
(NAPS)—When it comes to decorating, color experts are predicting that homeowners will be seeking out stronger colors in their search for intensity. Seeking Sensation The bold choice to turn to vibrant, optimistic colors is two-fold: a search for euphoria for some and, for others, a sense of oneself. According to PPG Pittsburgh Paints color expert Dee Schlotter, for many people, intensity is a survival strategy in times of crisis. “For some, it means seeking out extremes of sensation, rebelling against the bland existence that comes with cynicism and disenchantment. For others, it means ‘unplugging’ in order to reconnect with a life they feel is fleeting,” added Schlotter. Sensation seekers will go for colors that stir the senses and set them in motion, amping up the chromatic density of their lives. Expect their spaces to be full of strong contrasts—heavy and weightless, shadow and light, hot and cold. On the other hand, some individuals will use strong color as a way to turn inward and unplug. Expect them to opt for quiet, understated palettes accented by deep, rich colors in order to create the space they need to take time to relax. If you are thinking of taking the leap to strong, deep color, here are some tips: • If you appreciate deep, rich colors outside your home—whether in the clothes you wear or when you see these colors in restaurants or other people’s homes—then you will probably also like them in your own home. • Consider an accent wall. This is a great way to get a smaller taste of strong color while still adding interest to the room. • Test first. Use a large test sheet and a “time test”—view your color in all light: morning, noon and night. Live with it for a few days to make sure you love it. • Don’t let timidity hold you back. Recognize that there’s only one life to live and there’s no time to waste. If not now, then when? To learn more about the latest color trends for decorating, visit the PPG Pittsburgh Paints website at www.voiceofcolor.com.
Colors Can Tell A Story About A Room— And You (NAPS)—Decorators say one of the most beautiful things about color is that it can tell a story, capture a memory or trigger an emotion. For example, black and deep hues can suggest mystery while citruslike brights can evoke images of summertime fun and turquoise and watery blues often help offer a sense of calmness and tranquility. New Colors, New Stories One of the latest developments in interior paint is a new 240 fullspectrum color palette from Benjamin Moore, one of America’s leading paint manufacturers. The eye-candy array is aptly called Color Stories. These are handcrafted blends that are designed to read richer than conventional colors because they are formulated with more pigments in very precise, exacting amounts. According to paint expert Ray Gomez, these are full-spectrum paint colors, meaning that they contain anywhere between five and seven pigments, using no black or gray tints. Conventional colors use only three pigments and often fill in with black or gray. Environmentally Friendly Unlike other pigments or colorants, Benjamin Moore’s are zero-VOC. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be dangerous to human health and can cause harm to the environment. In this case, the company makes its own colorants. So when the colorants are added to Aura, which is the only paint formulation being offered for this special series and is the brand’s ultimate performance product, the paint remains low-VOC—under 50 grams per liter. Each color in the series is much like a secret recipe. Only select authorized Benjamin Moore re tailers are equipped to mix them and, without knowing the correct colorant ratios, these hues are impossible to duplicate. Lighting Is Key The colors in this new palette are best appreciated once the paint is applied and dried. The lighting in a room interacts with colors to yield a visual dynamic that can be an unexpected treat. Natural morning light will affect it one way, artificial or indirect light another, causing the color to take on different characteristics and appearances throughout the day. For more information, visit www.benjaminmoore.com/colorstories.

Why Buy Now: Five Reasons (NAPS)—The American dream of owning a home may be more within reach these days than many people realize. There are several reasons. The economy is improving, home prices have stabilized in most areas and the cost of owning a home is more affordable than ever. “It’s understandable for people to be skeptical about housing after the economic uncertainty of the past few years,” says Quicken Loans chief economist Bob Walters. “But history teaches us that the best time to buy is when we are most afraid and pessimistic. It is, of course, impossible to perfectly time markets, but I think people who buy homes now will be pleased that they did in the years to come.” Here are a few more reasons to buy a home: 1. Record-low mortgage rates—There’s no better time to lock in a 30- or 15-year fixed-rate mortgage. As the economy improves and rates go up, many people on the fence will be left wondering why they didn’t take advantage now. 2. It’s a buyer’s market—While home affordability is at record highs, that hasn’t translated into substantial demand for housing yet. As a result, buyers are in control and are dictating terms and conditions. It won’t always be this way….
June/July, 2012
3. Low-cost mortgages— Prospective homebuyers who cannot afford a higher down payment are purchasing homes with a mortgage insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). FHA loans have low down payments, are easier to qualify for and have lower closing costs. 4. The rent is too darn high—As demand for rental units surges and the cost to rent continues to move higher, a monthly mortgage payment can often be less than your monthly rent check. 5. Home values are positioned to appreciate—Home prices fell as much as 50 percent or more after the housing crash. No one should expect skyrocketing home values, but home prices will resume their steady march higher in the coming years.

(NAPS)—With a flood of real estate listings on the market, sellers continuously search for ways to stand out. The process is called staging. Done correctly, it can make a house look bigger, brighter, cleaner, warmer and make homebuyers want to buy it. To help, here are some tips: • Curb Appeal: The exterior of the house is the first thing potential buyers see; make sure it’s bright, clean and inviting. • Clean: Clean from top to bottom, getting rid of clutter and organizing the space. Don’t forget the ceilings and fans. • Brighten Up: Do what you can to help buyers envision living in the space. Make sure windows are streak free. Hide personal pictures. Instead, decorate with fresh flowers. • Living Space: Choose neutral tones for the walls and furniture. Slipcovers are an inexpensive way to spruce up old furniture. Add pillows for pops of color. • Dining Area: Set your dining room or kitchen table. Use brightly colored plates and napkins. • Master Bedroom: You can make the space appear larger by limiting furniture to essentials; a bed and dresser will do. Working closely with a licensed real estate agent can often help sellers achieve the best results. For more staging and DIY tips, visit www.Homes.com’s Idea Gallery.

Design, Tech Pros Share Top Secrets For A Successful Move
(NAPS)—Nearly 40 million Americans move every year and nearly half of those relocations occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day. With so many people on the move and GARAGE 1-800-794-9125 DOORS so many things to remember, it’s no wonder moving is viewed as a major stress. But it doesn’t have to be that way if you know the secrets for a successful move. David Gregg, a new-product journalist and senior editor • Custom Wood & Steel Doors from BehindtheBuy.com, and design expert Libby Langdon • Electric Door Openers say that, first and foremost, it’s important to have a clear 115 W MAIN • INDEPENDENCE action plan. Planning ahead and being well organized will save you from feeling lost in your new home. You’ll move in knowing that you’ll have access to your daily necessities and key communication and entertainment devices, as well as knowing you’ve saved money and time. “So often, families center their living room layout on the television,” says Langdon. “Since technology has become such an important part of our lives, you want to make sure you’ve planned for it to all be up and running before you begin moving your furniture around.” To do this, Gregg suggests, “Have your phone, high-speed Internet and cable television connected on the first day. You can schedule the disconnect and reconnect of these services, in addition to picking up other stress-relieving moving tips, in one stop at www.cablemover. com.” Langdon says beware of moving old junk to a new space. “Get rid of what you don’t use before you move.” Further, Gregg says that leaving “old junk” behind presents the perfect opportunity to upgrade your technology and take advantage of safe, electronics disposal services offered by some retailers. When it comes to unpacking, Libby says it’s smart to have the movers load the moving truck so that larger items like dressers and storage pieces are unloaded first. That way, you can start putting items in them right away and get one step closer to feeling like your new house is your home. Both experts agree that it’s important to remember to leave everyday items, such as the coffee maker, children’s favorite toys, remote controls, blankets and pillows, aside for that lastload box, also known as the “survival box.” This will make your first day and night in your Sixth & Myrtle • Independence • 620-331-1660 • 1-800-455-0744 new home easier and more www.firstfederalsl.com comfortable.
