(NAPS)—Most people have heard of their carbon footprint but have you heard of your water footprint? On one hand, the United States has an abundance of water, al­most 8 percent of the world’s freshwater resources, but only 4.5 percent of the world’s population. On the other hand, the average American’s water footprint, the total amount of water directly and indirectly used, is nearly twice the world’s average. You can calculate your water footprint at www.waterfootprint.org. Water Conservation Tips • Take a short shower instead of a bath. A five- to 10-minute shower uses less water than a full bathtub. • Install a Bell & Gossett Autocirc™ hot water circulator in the bathroom under the sink and it can save an average family of four more than 12,000 gallons of water a year by eliminating the need to wait for the water to get hot. • Shower during the warmer part of the day and use cooler water. Showering during the heat of the day is a great way to reduce your hot water consumption. • Install a more efficient shower fixture: Efficient fixtures maintain high pressure while lowering the amount of water used. • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. • Use a drip irrigation system instead of a hose or sprinkler to water your garden. • Direct the water drain line from your air conditioner to a flower bed, tree base or onto your lawn. • Set up a rain barrel under a rain gutter outside your house. Instead of staring at the outer walls, concentrate on your inner emotions. Every color has an emotional association, and individuals are drawn to different colors for reasons depending on their distinct personalities. The feelings that stem from the five senses are the best sources to identify meaningful colors best suited for your personality, style and interests. What helps homeowners feel most comfortable and confident with their color choices is recognizing the role your reactions to color play in your home decor. According to color expert Dee Schlotter, “Color preferences are unique, and choosing a color is a personal exercise.” She believes that the feelings specific colors elicit are a subconscious reaction based on past experiences and associations. “Many times, we’re not even aware of why we like a color or how certain colors, when paired together, make us feel,” adds Schlotter. Get Rid Of Household Hazards (NAPS)—Make safety a priority in your home when you clean. Here are tips to help: Living Room/Dining Room • S ecure all bookcases, shelving and heavy furniture. Place heavier items on lower shelves and in bottom drawers. • Many houseplants are poisonous and pots are heavy, so keep them out of reach of little hands. • Use plug protectors for all unused wall outlets. Bathroom • To prevent bathwater scalds, set the thermostat of your hot water heater no higher than 120 degrees F. It takes just three seconds for a child to sustain a third degree burn at 140 degrees F. • Always request child-resis­tant packaging for medicine, but go a step further by making sure medicine cabinets are locked at all times. Even items that may seem harmless can be dangerous to a child. Kitchen • Keep sharp knives and other utensils well out of reach and make sure that knife blades are pointing down when placed in a dishwasher’s cutlery basket. • When cooking, always use the back burners, turn pot handles toward the back of the stove and keep hot foods and liquids away from young children. • And make sure microwaves are out of reach of children as well; the vast majority of micro­wave burns among children are serious scald burns. Bedroom • Make sure cribs are properly assembled and meet current safety standards, and that crib mattresses fit snugly. • According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, infants and young children can die from accidentally strangling in window cords. The Window Covering Safety Council reminds parents and caregivers of potential window-cord dangers and urges them to make the right choice and use only cordless window products in homes with young children. Put A Damper On Mold And Musty Odors (NAPS)—Musty odors coming from the basement or crawlspace are not only extremely unpleasant but can be both dangerous and expensive to correct if left untreated. Excess moisture is the most common problem in basements and crawlspaces—either coming from outside or produced inside the home by everyday activities.
