Six Ways To Sleep Better (NAPS)—Here’s eye-opening news: Getting the right amount of restful sleep can reduce your risk of depression, diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure and obesity, and, in general, improve your quality of life. The Problem Even so, 75 percent of people struggle to get restorative sleep in the summertime, according to a recent survey. Whether you blame it on longer daylight hours or higher temperatures, the summer months can change sleep cycles. What You Can Do You can’t change the weather, but there are some things you can control: • Maintain the 65 Rule: The latest sleep research is clear: The ideal sleeping temperature is 65 degrees Fahrenheit with 65 percent humidity. WHY: “When preparing for sleep, your body’s internal temperature drops slightly and stays low until shortly before you wake up,” explained Pete Bils, Sleep Number’s VP of sleep science and research. “As your body temperature drops, heat is released into the mattress and pillow. If the room is too warm, the heat has nowhere to go except to pool around your body. This results in tossing and turning and constantly trying to find the cool side of the pillow.” • Shower off to stay chill: Take a warm bath or shower before bedtime. WHY: When you trade a warm bathroom for the cooler household air, your body temperature drops, which can help you enter sleep mode. Alternatively, consider going to bed with slightly damp hair; as the water evaporates, it creates a cooling effect. • Follow the two-hour rule: Don’t exercise or eat for at least two hours before bedtime. WHY: Your body needs time to cool down before you head to bed. Both eating and exercise warm it up. • Limit exposure to light or screens before bed: About an hour before bed, dim the lights, turn off screens and relax by reading a book or doing light chores. WHY: According to Bils, bright lights and binge watching TV or movies can decrease the sleep hormone melatonin and keep your mind from relaxing. • Maintain sleep schedules through vacations: Even when traveling, try to keep your normal sleep schedule. That will help you stay alert and active on the road. WHY: “Altering your sleep schedule actually creates jet lag–like symptoms, which affects your motor skills, concentration, mood and health,” Bils noted. • Consider a warm-weather wardrobe for your room. Ensure your comforters are light and breathable so you sleep comfortably all night long. And take advantage of the latest high-tech solutions: Sleep Number offers a DualTemp™ layer that you can add to any mattress to heat and cool each side, so you can both have it the way you like. WHY: Just as you have winter and summer jackets, you should have blankets that vary in warmth for different seasons. Body heat is released through your feet, head and hands, so keep them uncovered if you find yourself too warm.

A More Energy-Efficient Approach to Home Cooling and Heating (NAPS)—Many homeowners crank up their central air conditioning system or turn to multiple noisy window units to keep cool in the summer. Then come fall, they crank up the heat. Unfortunately, neither option is ideal: central air, though convenient, wastes energy by its all-or-nothing nature. Window units, in addition to being cumbersome, diminish a room’s attractiveness and obscure its views. Luckily, there is a third option that avoids these pitfalls. They are called mini-split systems. Up To 25% Savings Mini-splits are ductless heating and cooling systems that allow you to control the temperatures in individual rooms rather than the entire house. You’re not only customizing your comfort, you’re saving considerable energy and up to 25% on utility bills. Overall, minisplit provider Fujitsu General offers the most energy-efficient lineup. Advantages Over Window-Mounted AC & Central Air Compared to window units, mini-split systems are more attractive, quieter and more energy efficient. Plus, they’re set higher on the wall or ceiling, freeing up living space. Central air systems require expensive, intrusive ductwork and they’re not scalable, meaning it cannot be easily extended to previously unfinished living spaces like attics, basements or three-season rooms. Mini-splits don’t require complex, expensive ductwork and can be installed to cool and heat newly converted spaces. Mini-splits also allow for temperature control by individual room for maximum comfort and energy efficiency. You can keep different rooms at different temperatures—a solution to the thermostat wars waged by so many families, especially those with young children or senior parents. And while central air systems and window units can be noisy, mini-splits are whisper quiet indoors and out. Maximum Flexibility. Minimum Space Fujitsu’s Mini-split Systems position compressors outside the house, but there’s no need for a basement- or attic-located evaporator unit, thanks to thin copper tubing that pumps refrigerant directly to discreet evaporators inside. In cold weather, the same unit works in reverse by absorbing heat from the outside air and moving it indoors. The result is efficient cooling and heating for year-round, whole-house comfort. Finally, mini-split systems come in all shapes and sizes for a refreshing amount of choice. Wall-mounted systems mount well above eye-level, while floor-mounted systems, with their compact size, are ideal for residential radiator replacements or any room with limited upper wall space, such as a kitchen or sunroom. Slim duct systems are ideal for homeowners who want units completely out of sight, since they’re concealed in a ceiling or framed enclosure below a ceiling.

Made to Order—The Personalized Kitchen Trend (NAPS)—Kitchen remodels these days are less likely to be done with an eye to resell and more likely to be customized to reflect one’s personal style...with this rising trend, homeowners are now decorating to their taste and furnishing with appliances made to suit their lifestyle. Personalized Appliances Fortunately, it’s easier than ever before to get the personalized look and function that is in such high demand. For example, ILVE appliances are completely hand-assembled in Italy with the option to customize and build ranges just the way you want. After choosing the ideal look and style for your range, ILVE allows you to take it one step further offering a variety of mix and match accessories. These unique add-ons such as a Gas Barbeque Grill, Wok Ring and Stainless Steel Griddle allow you to customize your range’s cooking surface with the unique ability to change it over time. So if you want to change over from a bacon griddle to an oven top steamer or fish poacher, anything is possible. Additional optional accessories by ILVE include a chopping board, bain-marie warming basin and cast iron steak pans. ILVE appliances and accessories epitomize the theory of customizing your space for your personal needs and lifestyle. Each accessory caters to different cooking styles and innovative ways to serve food. Another Italian brand, Verona appliances, offers seven color finishes and two design series as well as optional handrail and leg choices so you can customize your look affordably. The stylish line of pro-style dual fuel, gas or electric ranges, as well as built-in ovens and cooktops, add beauty and efficiency to any kitchen. Verona’s appliances and accessories are perfect for the homeowner that loves to switch things up inside the kitchen. Many of Verona’s coordinating accessories in the Verona Chefs Pak are interchangeable, removable and really allow you to customize your range according to what and how you like to cook. Is It Time To Replace Your Home Comfort System? (NAPS)—As a home comfort system ages, repairs to the system can become more frequent and expensive. As a result, you might ask yourself whether it makes more sense to repair the system or invest in new, more efficient equipment. Having a conversation with your contractor and asking the following questions can help you make an informed decision: 1. How long should my home comfort system last? Industry averages suggest a home comfort system should last between 12 and 15 years, as long as you have a qualified technician perform regular preventive maintenance and service. 2. In addition to the age of my system, what things might indicate it’s time to replace my system? • Your equipment needs frequent repairs. • Your energy bills are going up. • Some rooms in your home are too hot or too cold. • Your system is noisy. • Your home has humidity problems. • Your home has excessive dust. • You have to leave your thermostat set at one constant temperature. 3. In the case of a repair, why is it important to match components? Repairs that require the replacement of system components, particularly on older equipment, may result in a mismatched system. Components that do not match can decrease system efficiency, compromise your comfort and shorten the life span of the compressor. Therefore, it’s important to know the full impact of a repair and which components will be affected. 4. What benefits can a new system offer? Today’s ENERGY STAR® –(a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency program) qualified systems are as much as 60 percent more efficient than 10-year-old equipment. In addition to im proved efficiency, new systems offer a variety of features that your current system may not have, including two-stage cooling, dehumidifiers, humidifiers and ultraviolet lights that can increase comfort and improve your home’s indoor air quality. 5. What is the efficiency rating of a new system? When it comes to cooling, air conditioners and heat pumps are rated according to the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER). The efficiency of a fuel-burning furnace is expressed as the annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE), and heat pump efficiency is expressed as the unit’s heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF). Generally speaking, a higher AFUE, SEER or HSPF means increased efficiency and reduced operating expenses. So if you are concerned about utility bills and are faced with an expensive repair, you may want to look at the energy savings that a new system will offer. 6. If I’m planning to move within a year, does it make sense to replace my system? If your system is still working and you are planning to move, talk with your real estate agent to discuss the pros and cons of repairing your existing system or installing a new system before placing your home on the market. Your HVAC contractor can help you with these questions and others you might have. To locate a Coleman HVAC contractor near you, please visit www.colemanac.com and follow it on www.youtube.com/ColemanHomeComfort and @ ColemanHVAC on Twitter.

Aging In Place: What Smart Homeowners Are Doing To Stay Self-Reliant (NAPS)—More than 90 percent of older adults prefer to age in place rather than move to assisted living or senior housing, according to the National Aging in Place Council (NAIPC). By choosing to stay at home well into retirement, homeowners are taking on more responsibility for maintaining their independence as well as maintaining their home. However, they may not be aware of the significant responsibilities, including home care that can require physical labor or the increasing dependence on reliable electricity to maintain health, communication and security needs. Additionally, the homeowner may not be aware of the myriad of minor upgrades needed to adequately modify the house for safe, secure and comfortable living. When thinking about comfort and security, home automation is top of mind for today’s modern house. This includes lighting controls and fixtures that cast more light for better visibility inside the home. Enhanced lighting and monitoring will also improve security and can alter the mood with just a touch of a button. Better lighting for an aging homeowner is a top remodeling upgrade, while eliminating cords from lamps can simultaneously reduce the risk of trips and falls in the home. These days, it’s common to think about losing electricity due to storms and windy weather as well as diminished visibility in a darkened home. A backup generator can reduce these risks and can also be a lifesaver if the home relies on refrigerated medications or any kind of electronic monitoring. Additionally, lifesaving equipment such as an oxygen concentrator, air-conditioning or heating throughout the seasons may be imperative. Common aging-in-place home improvements, like the elevator or stair assist, are also electrical devices that may require backup power. A home standby generator can make sure these features remain usable and aren’t cause for concern. When deciding to age in place, it’s smart to change the conversation from aging to accessibility. The comforts of home are only attainable when the features of the home are accessible, and without power, even the ability to communicate with family is at risk. The ability to live comfortably at home can mean healthier and happier living for years to come. Wellness, safety and independence are easier to achieve with a Generac home standby generator and an added peace of mind.

Four Tips For Protecting Your Family From Fire (NAPS)—According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 350,000 home fires occur each year—but you can help your family stay safe. Fire Safety Suggestions Keep your family safe by: 1. Having at least one fire alarm on each floor of the house and in each bedroom. 2. Checking the batteries monthly and replacing them at least once a year, more often if necessary. 3. Helping kids identify what items are safe to play with in the house. “Many children who play with fire do so out of curiosity or a desire to emulate their parents,” explains Dr. Robert Cole, President of Fireproof Children and spokesperson for BIC’s play safe! be safe! fire safety education program. “Eliminate temptation by keeping lighters and matches out of sight and reach and by supervising playtime.” 4. Helping your youngsters understand fire safety. Children learn best when they feel comfortable. The play safe! be safe! program (www.playsafebesafe.com) provides teachers, parents and those who care for young children with the tools they need to teach kids about fire safety and prevention by sharing basic facts, playing games and visual storytelling. Consider this: Parents know that birthday candles, when left unattended, can quickly start a roaring fire. Young children, however, cannot understand what could happen if they play with an unattended candle. The first step to keep families safe is teaching children how to react to a fire emergency. Adds Dr. Cole, “Many young children are scared of strangers and loud noises. When a siren goes off and unfamiliar firemen in ‘scary’ masks enter their house to rescue those inside, a child’s first instinct will be to hide. Parents should teach their children what to do if they hear the fire alarm or see a firefighter coming to help.” Parents and children can learn fire safety from an entertaining, educational website: www.playsafebesafe.com. Parents can most effectively help their children overcome fear through positive messaging and reinforcement. Interactive games, such as the ones featured on the www.playsafebesafe.com site, let children learn in a safe, fun and rewarding way. Picture books, both fictional and nonfictional, can also be great learning tools. When children are able to see images of firefighters and their “scary-looking” gear in a safe and calm setting, they are less likely to panic in times of danger. Since the program’s inception in 1994, BIC Corporation has distributed more than 114,000 fire safety education kits and more than 184 workshops with community leaders. Each play safe! be safe! kit includes a 20-minute multilingual video (in English, French Canadian and Spanish), colorful story cards, activity boards, a card game and a comprehensive teacher’s manual. Spray Foam’s Versatility Adds Energy Efficiency To Homes Of Any Age (NAPS)—For the 66 percent of Americans who live in homes built before 1980, lower heating and cooling costs might seem like a hard-to-achieve fantasy. But with the right insulation choice, owners of those character-filled turn-of-the-century farmhouses can capitalize on potential opportunities to reduce their energy bills. Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation is an especially versatile choice when it comes to modernizing these older homes. SPF can be easily installed when renovating existing walls and attics, including hard-to-reach and odd-shaped areas. SPF is a spray-applied insulation installed seamlessly in and around building surfaces. Sealing cracks, seams and joints with SPF cuts down on energy loss from drafts and leaks. A properly insulated and sealed home can reduce heating and cooling needs by 30 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Lastly, let’s not forget the attic. Most homeowners may not realize that attics are places where heat and cold air can escape. The Department of Energy also reports that attic openings account for 15 percent of a typical home’s energy losses. The use of SPF to insulate an attic offers an important step in improving a home’s energy efficiency. When updating a house with SPF, homeowners can take advantage of one of the most effective ways to improve energy efficiency without sacrificing the character of their older homes. September/October, 2016 The Buzz On Bees

(NAPS)—If you’ve ever wondered where the term “worker bee” comes from, consider this when you sit down for your next meal: One out of every three bites of food you eat exists because of bees and other pollinators. Without their contributions to the pollination of flowering 202 S. 21st, Parsons plants, chances are your favorite fruit, vegetable or nut simply wouldn’t be as plentiful, economical or nutritious. The connections among growing successful crops, food and pollinator activity suggest that a healthy bee population is essential to meeting the heightened demand for food that accompanies an expanding global human population. Additionally, beyond their benefits to crops, pollinators—and their habitats—promote enhanced biodiversity and environmental benefits. Much like the planet’s land and natural resources, however, pollinators face a host of challenges— parasites, disease, poor nutrition, and climate change, to name a few. And just as a varied diet is important for human health, nutrition is equally crucial for the health of bees. To help support a thriving environment for bees and other pollinators, Syngenta, a global agriculture company, works with beekeepers and researchers throughout the world to better understand pollinators’ needs, identify ways to improve bee health and implement programs to help restore these vital populations. (NAPS)—A home comfort system is a major investment, so homeowners need an understanding of the system they’re getting, whether it’s an air conditioner, heat pump or gas furnace. To help, the experts at the Champion® brand of Johnson Controls answer common questions. 1. What does HVAC mean? HVAC is the acronym for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, which are the three functions a home comfort system typically combines. Together, these technologies control indoor environmental comfort and air quality. 2. How can I find the right contractor? Look for one associated with a reputable brand of HVAC equipment and backed by the products and training resources of a major manufacturer. 3. What are the benefits of a central HVAC system? It provides the highest level of overall comfort, indoor air quality and humidity control and makes your house more attractive to potential buyers. 4. Should I repair or replace my existing system? Generally, replace your existing home comfort system when repairs cost 30 percent of a new purchase or utility bills are up 50 percent due to an older, less efficient system using more, higher-priced electricity. 5. If I get a new system, will I be able to reuse any parts of my existing one? Your contractor will inspect your electrical system, ductwork and other components and provide a recommendation on what you should replace and what you can reuse. 6. What can I expect to save with new equipment? Airconditioning and heating equipment consume about 44 percent of a home’s energy bill. Today’s ENERGY STAR®– (a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) qualified systems are as much as 60 percent more efficient than 10-year-old equipment. 7. How complicated is the installation? That depends on the house, the existing system and the new one. Although air conditioners and gas furnaces require different components, the common denominator is ductwork, which must be properly sized and zoned. 8. What thermostat should I use? Look for a programmable thermostat for accurate, reliable, energy-saving performance. For added savings and convenience, the Champion Touchscreen Thermostat with Proprietary Hexagon Interface from Johnson Controls works with your smartphone to easily program your system wherever you are. 9. What does an air handler do? It circulates conditioned air. You can combine it with accessories to filter, humidify or dehumidify the air. 10. Can my HVAC system improve indoor air? Indoor air can be from five to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air. Humidifiers, dehumidifiers, ventilation systems, ultraviolet lights and air filter technologies can dramatically improve indoor air quality. Your HVAC contractor can determine your costs and customize a system just for you. The Floors Of Tomorrow Will Reflect What’s On The Runway Today (NAPS)—When you walk into a room, your eyes do not move from top to bottom—quite the opposite. Your gaze starts at the floor and moves up. Just as the clothes you wear make a fashion statement, your floors set the tone, add the drama and create the mood in your home. According to the World Floor Covering Association (WFCA), the latest products and trends in flooring offer high-tech innovations, low-maintenance attributes and eco-friendly features. Below, you’ll find a closer look at some of the latest styles to consider when it’s time to dress your floors: Weathered and Worn Aged and vintage looks have maintained their firm grip when it comes to floor trends. Think genuine hardwood with worn, heavily textured wood grain and the weathered imperfections that can only be achieved with years of use. For many, price has kept these highly sought floors out of reach—until now. Manufacturers today are building the patina of reclaimed wood into brand-new flooring products. Solid and engineered hardwood formats can have all the distressed and eroded character of products much older so each board has a unique look. The same vintage looks are available in laminate and luxury vinyl tile (LVT). The surfaces are created using high-resolution digital imaging and state-of-the-art embossing techniques. Designed to minimize repeats, they’re almost impossible to tell from the real thing—and significantly less expensive! Porcelain tiles feature salvaged looks such as oxidized metal and weathered wood. Tiles with dry, earthen textures and parched surface finishes in light to mid sun-baked shades and hazy grays are also popular. The beauty of the weathered look is that it pairs well with all interiors, does a wonderful job of hiding blemishes, and works well with both soft and bold color accents. Depth and Dimension The right flooring can make large spaces cozy and small spaces grand with long, wide planks and tiles. Longer wood planks and largeformat porcelain tiles mean fewer seams and grout lines, lengthening smaller spaces such as hallways and bathrooms as the eye is not distracted by breaks in the flooring. Fewer seams and less grout means easier cleaning, too. Texture and Pattern The latest looks in LVT involve nature-inspired low-luster and matte finishes. Also in step with toned-down looks are oil-finish hardwood floors, which are steadily gaining ground among designers and consumers. Natural oils penetrate the wood grain for a satinlike, zero-gloss appearance. In soft-surface flooring, highly affordable synthetics offer a more delustered look that mimics more expensive natural materials including wool, silk and cotton. The matte surface also works to mask vacuum marks and footprints. Concrete flooring offers soft and warm looks in muted grays, taupe and beige. Its versatility makes it complementary and adaptable to all kinds of interior settings. Another trend is to mix contrasting materials such as wood and tile. Though not possible with the “real thing” due to wood’s tendency to expand and contract, pairing wood and stone looks in porcelain creates a stunning effect. Tiles made to look like bricks are also popular. The laid-back “loft look” in porcelain is much easier to maintain than the real thing. The most basic of shapes, the stripe, is also appearing in all categories of flooring, especially soft surface. It appears frequently in the form of striated rock looks in weaves; in porcelain and glass, as mini finger tiles; and in vinyl, in looks that mimic linen, sedimentary rock and parquet. Carpet continues to get softer and more plush as technology advances. The latest look features layered color, soft texture and lots of dimension. Using another technique that combines both loops and sheared fibers, carpets are imbued with 3-D effects featuring multiple heights and

colors ranging from subtle to bold. Growing in popularity are carpets and rugs in florals and foliage looks in shades of indigo, petrol, purple and green. Other new carpets show sculpted surfaces that look like sand dunes, ocean waves and tree bark. Modern Conveniences Beauty is important in floor coverings, but function is also key. Over 70 percent of the population owns a pet, so one manufacturer offers a 100 percent “All Pet Warranty” on carpets with built-in stain repellent and total moisture absorption. New technology forces all the water from the stain to evaporate so the trace material left over can simply be wiped away.

Three Ways To Be More Efficient And Get The Job Done Right

(NAPS)—When it comes to work and performing tough jobs, efficiency is key. Regardless of your profession or hobbies, here are ways to ensure you get the job done right. Put an End to Multitasking Because our brains are hardwired to focus on only one task at a time, humans are inherently bad multitaskers. In fact, studies have shown that multitasking often kills productivity and can cause poor short-term memory. Instead of tackling a painting project at the same time you’re redoing your master bathroom, focus on one activity at a time. With less distraction, you’ll get more done. Use the Right Tools Just like firefighters wouldn’t use a garden hose to do their job, using the best tools for the project at hand makes life easier. For example, everyone owns a can of WD-40 Multi-Use Product, but the product also comes in a line that offers different delivery systems that are perfect for DIY enthusiasts, crafters and hobbyists, as well as automotive professionals, contractors and factory workers. The Smart Straw Sprays 2 Ways allows for thousands of uses, the Big Blast covers large areas, and the One Gallon lets you soak tools and supplies. Take a Break from Your Routine Learning new things keeps the mind young and active. If you’re putting in long hours on a project, take an extended break so that your mind is sharper upon return. Breaks keep us from getting bored and help us make connections we might otherwise miss. Plan something fun, go on a short walk, meditate or simply step away. When you return, you’ll likely have a new solution, or at least a different way of looking at things. For more efficiency tips, visit http://wd40.com/powerof5. ®
