1501 tour - HISTORY OF MADRES DE PLAZA DE MAYO

6-night program with three SEP included

DAY 1 - BUENOS AIRES Our Tour Director will meet us at the airport. Our private coach will be waiting to transfer us to our hotel in Buenos Aires. Our accommodation for the next two nights will be in Buenos Aires. It is one of the largest cities in Latin America with a lot of cultural offerings. Inhabitants of Buenos Aires are called porteños, “people from the port.” We will take a comprehensive Buenos Aires City Tour, highlighting many of the important landmarks and buildings in the city, as well as the various neighborhoods including La Boca, San Telmo and Palermo. Dinner this evening is in the renovated dockside area of Puerto Madero where you can enjoy a buffet dinner of typical foods. Meals Included: Dinner DAY 2 - BUENOS AIRES From 1976 until 1984, a military junta or dictatorship ruled Argentina with a strict hand against dissidents. Thousands of Argentinians just disappeared (“los desaparecidos”), having been taken to detention centers where they were tortured and killed, with many buried in mass graves. Pregnant women were taken, allowed to live long enough to give birth and then were executed; their children sent to live with military families. Stand in the Plaza de Mayo, where the March of the Mothers and the Grandmothers took place. View the Casa de Gobierno, better known as the Casa Rosada. The pink hue of the building is said to be a symbol of unification between two warring political factions, the federales (whose color was red) and the unitarios (represented by white). The balcony facing Plaza de Mayo served as the lofty stage from which Evita rallied the descamisados (the shirtless, or the working class). Meet with a University Professor who specializes in the history of Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo to discuss the events of the Guerra Sucia. Lunch is included at Café Tortoni, the oldest restaurant in Argentina. We will meet a local professor that will talk us about history of Mothers of Plaza de Mayo (Madres de Plaza de Mayo), in an open and informal class of history. After lunch, we will continue to the Cabildo, the only colonial building on the Plaza de Mayo. This is the epicenter of the May Revolution of 1810, where patriotic citizens gathered to vote against Spanish rule. Part of the Cabildo was torn down to create an entry point from the Plaza de Mayo to the Avenida de Mayo. Walk down the Avenida, connecting to the Plaza Congreso, where we will see the National Congress and its immense central dome modeled after that of the Capitol Building in Washington, DC. Attend a Tango Class this afternoon and learn about the rhythm and movement of the dance. This evening, dinner will be provided at the Tango House, and include show Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner with show SEP: Open Class with local professor of history DAY 3 - BUENOS AIRES We journey just north of the city to explore the Parana River Delta, and extraordinary ecological zone. We will board the Tren de la Costa along the Rio de la Plata coast. The San Isidro courts were witness to one of the most public adoption cases the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo pursued against media mogul Ernestina Noble de Herrera. A short walk around the town takes us to the San Isidoro Cathedral before returning to the train which will depart for Tigre Delta, the world’s largest and only delta that does not end at an ocean or sea. Upon arrival at Tigre we will take in the natural scene and crafts at the Fruit Dock in Tigre, where we may see some fruit in the process of exportation. Our tour of the Delta also includes a ride on a river boat to better see how people turned the swampy delta into modern/developed land and freshwater canals. Our guide will point out native birds and flora along the way. REturn to hotel. Dinner included in local restaurant.

Encircled by a towering perimeter wall and entered via a striking columned portico, Recoleta Cemetery is one of the world’s most exquisite necropolises; a glorious ‘City of the Dead’ that houses some of the country’s most prominent political, military and artistic icons. Over 6,400 tombs are found in the Cemetery, laid out in formal tree-lined avenues and punctuated with beautifully sculpted monuments, poignant marble statutes and grand, bronze-cast mausoleums. Notable burial plots include the vivid white stone tomb of newspaper founder José C. Paz, flanked by a pair of dazzling Rubenesque angels; the ostentatious tomb of former Argentine president Carlos Pellegrini, featuring an elaborate statue of the controversial leader atop the coffin; and the evocative statues of crying widows kneeling beside the tomb of Colonel Falcon, the Chief of Police famously assassinated by rebels in 1909. With a list of residents that reads like a who’s who of Buenos Aires’ high society, the cemetery serves not only as a resting place for the dead but as a testament to the golden age of Buenos Aires and the equally turbulent and triumphant history of Argentina. One thing’s for sure – the ornate miniature city with its breathtaking sculptures and fine works of art is a fitting tribute to everyone buried there. 1550 tour - VOLUNTEERING PROGRAMS

Our company work with partners to offer excellent volunteering activities for groups interested. We found that most opportunities for international volunteers fall into few categories or areas of social work. These categories allow you to clearly determine where your skills would be best utilized or where your interests are best met. Although skills are important, a sincere willingness to learn and work is often all that is required to make a valuable contribution. From these areas, we can arrange the best program for you. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENTS

SOCIAL INCLUSION AND POVERTY RELIEF

Volunteers will assist local communities, in both rural and urban Argentina, with projects that focus on community development. One of BA Volunteer’s primary objectives is to bring to Argentina volunteers from all over the world to work in social projects that are organized, developed, and implemented by interdisciplinary groups comprised of representatives from all sectors of society. Things you could be doing...

Due to the rising poverty levels in Buenos Aires following the economic crisis of 2001, numerous social organizations were created to relieve poverty and promote social inclusion. Things you could be doing...

• Work actively to enhance the leadership capacity of community members, leaders, and groups within the community • Incorporate the diverse interests of the community members in the community development process. • Raise the profile of a grassroots organization by designing, developing and implementing a communications strategy. • Raise essential funds, both by developing funding proposals yourself and by training community members to do the same

• Assisting those in poor communities to enhance their capacity of self-development • Upgrading basic production conditions and primary social service levels • Promoting the recipients’ self-independence. • Working in soup kitchens or temporary/emergency settlements • Working in the organization’s headquarters to maintain and develop new poverty-relief programs • Accompanying and assisting participants in workplace inclusion activities

ENVIROMENTAL PROGRAMS

CHILD SERVICE DEVELOPMENTS

The environmental makeup of Argentine varies greatly: from the glaciers of Patagonia to the jungles of the Northeast, from the high mountain plains to the lowlying pampas. As a result there are countless organizations working to promote environmental causes. Things you could be doing:

We work with NGOs that assist children and their families in numerous ways. With the help of these NGOs, children who otherwise would be isolated or excluded due to poor living conditions, family difficulties, or illness are allowed to grow, develop, and learn to express themselves in a healthy manner.

• Resources and investigation • Awareness raising • Recycling workshops • Help the organizations to communicate their objectives. • Design of flyers and translation of websites • Work in an organic garden

Things you could be doing: • Working with children from poorer communities within Buenos Aires to develop art in their community. Our NGOs design programs in theatre, music, painting, photography and more. • Working and playing at shelter for children. • Help spread information about healthy development for children, from pre-birth to adolescence.

HUMAN RIGHTS The majority of the countries in the world today ratifies the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948. The declaration encourages member states to protect and promote a number of human, civil, economic and social rights, asserting these rights are part of the “foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world”. The Argentine government has ratified the Human Rights Declaration, as well as the Conventions but its inhabitants are still not ensured their rights. As the gap between the poor and the rich parts of the population has grown over the last decade, the poor have increasingly been subject to socio-economic discrimination and a lack of access to basic services. Things you could be doing: • Advocacy • Providing social services

EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS

ART & DEVELOPMENT

The current socio-economic reality and the lack of sound public policy in Argentina have given rise to great number of non-governmental organizations that dedicate themselves to the promotion, development, and execution of diverse educational programs. Things you could be doing:

Art, in all its forms, is not just a means of expression, but also a therapeutic tool that in recent years has become increasingly important in various forms: not just as a means of personal growth and community involvement but also a complement to treating illness.

• Form part of a team designated to design educational programs. • Work as a tutor at a study-help or job-training workshop. • Collaborate on the funding of the organizations. • Help improve the administrative processes of these organizations. • Teach English, drama, art, music, etc

Things you could be doing: • Teaching • Assisting with periodic activities for children. • Collaborating in the strategic development of economic and material resources. • Completing fundraising activities. • Participating in the design of new projects.
