Explorations & Activities

The Moais, are c are monolithic human figures carved by the Rapa Nui people from rock on the Chilean Polynesian island of Easter Island between the years 1250 and 1500

Located 8 km from Hanga Roa, on a 9.6 km2 plot of land, unsuitable for agriculture and containing no archaeological remains, explora Rapa Nui is located in a privileged location from which to explore the island.

At explora Rapa Nui we offer over 20 explorations at different levels. In general, all have strong cultural and archaeological overtones, and are led by an expert bilingual local guide.

Explora Rapa Nui | RipioTurismo Magazine 2016-2017

At 3.700 km off the South American continent and surrounded by the clearest, deepest waters on the planet, Rapa Nui has been the cradle of a unique and enigmatic culture that continues to endure today. The island’s language, music, and numerous traditions are kept alive by the island’s inhabitants, while the enormous carved stone Moai are testimony to their mysterious past. Rapa Nui would have been occupied around the year 600 AD by a group of settlers believed to have come from the Marquesas Islands in the eastern Pacific. This original colony of the island is sanctified in myth, whose protagonist is Chief Hotu Matu’a, the first king and founding figure of the Rapa Nui culture. The milestones of this prehistoric age are the development of Rongo Rongo, an indecipherable writing system, and a devotion to ancestors symbolized by the Moai, whose construction would have started around the year 1000 AD, and would eventually total more than 900. Constructed of volcanic stone and located in large ceremonial altars, named Ahu, they allegedly possessed mana, and were a fountain of well-being, prestige, and legitimacy of the ruling class. The overexploitation of the island’s resources in the fifteenth century sent the culture into crisis, which caused the established ruling class and ideological system to collapse. The Moai were toppled and the devotion to ancestors was abandoned.

Did you know that the name of Easter Island was given by the dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen who discovered it on an Easter Sunday? During this time, in 1722, the expedition of a Dutchman by the name of Jacob Roggeveen arrived to the island, who later divulged the existence of Rapa Nui to Europe. Contact with the West was catastrophic for the inhabitants of Rapa Nui. Almost a third of them were taken to Peru to be used as forced labor. A few managed to return to the island, introducing epidemics that reduced the population to 111 people. In 1888 Rapa Nui was incorporated as a soveriegn land of Chile, and the “Compañía Explotadora de Isla de Pascua” was established, dedicated to the breeding and raising of sheep. Due to constant abuses by the Compañía, in 1953 the Chilean government left the administration of the island in the hands of the Chilean Navy.

No.03 | RipioTurismo Magazine 2016-2017

My place in the World Llao Llao, Hotel & Resort, Golf and Spa. Like staying in Paradise Everybody has a “Place in the World”. I have many. I love to walk Paris for example, or visit New York and enjoy the incredible offer you can find there. I would like to stay in Prague for a time, or enjoy culture and life of Barcelona anytime. But, if you give me only one option, I would like to choose Patagonia. And in Patagonia, I specially love the lakes area. I do not know why exactly. I really love these incredible lanscapes with mountains and lakes, green forests during summer and snowcapped peaks during winter. Or the red color during the autumn, it´s unique. But Bariloche offers also, excellent services. Yo cannot go to Bariloche and do not stop in La Familia Weiss Restaurant for a lunch or dinner. They offer a unique local gastronomy you only can find there. It´s great. Or take a moment to go to Mamuschka to taste the exquisite chocolate elaborated with excellence. Both places are part of my rutine when I visit the area. But what I want to talk you about is Llao Llao. A warm mountain deluxe hotel located only 27 km from Bariloche. You access along a wonderful scenery route between Nahuel Huapi Lake and the mountains. It´s complete name is Llao Llao Hotel, Resort, Golf & Spa.

October 26, 1939 a fire destroyed the building completely, but it was reopened on December 15, 1940. Since then, members of the aristocracy, officials, diplomats and famous guests have stayed at the hotel. Although it closed in 1978 for a period of 15 years, the spirit of the hotel remained intact. The Hotel opened its doors to the public again in 1993 under the name of Llao Llao Hotel & Resort, Golf-Spa. In December 2007, the Lago Moreno wing was opened (Llao Llao Deluxe Suites – Moreno Lake Wing) built on a strategic site overlooking stunning views of Moreno Lake and Mount Tronador.

The place is wonderful, it is a Pardise itself. The hotel offers a wonderful service, and you wil take note of this just on arrival. People is ready to give you a wonderful experience during your stay. Gastronomy is exquisite. I cannot remember a better breakfast, really not. The Spa is great, you can stay in a wonderful heated swimming pool, inside or outside, but inmersed in the wonderful landscape surronded the hotel, with magnificent overviews of the garden and the Moreno Lake and its mountains. Believe me, it is really unique. If you love golf, you have an incredible golf The Architect Alejandro Bustillo course too. A trip to the incredible

Antarctica OceanWide Expeditions offers a wonderful expedition to the White Continent, to enjoy the unique Emperor Penguin and the Weddell Sea.

THE ANTARCTIC PENINSULA The Antarctic Peninsula is part of the Antarctic Continent and is the southern continuation of the mountain chain that runs from North America through South America into the Scotia Sea. Here it continues as a mainly sub-marine ridge, the Scotia Ridge, until it comes above sea-level at the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. The peninsula consists of an 800 kilometres (500 mile) long mountain chain, the highest peaks rising to approximately 2,800 metres (9,186 feet), and numerous off-lying islands. The Peninsula offers the most dramatic scenery and biggest variety of wildlife in Antarctica. Visitors are easily overcome by sensory overload by the huge amount of ice-bergs.
