Corporate Social Responsibility
22 |
As a group of companies, we take seriously our role as ‘guardians of the Himalaya’ whilst contributing to the responsible development of mountain adventure in Nepal. We ensure that all our treks cause minimal environmental impact, that we act respectfully towards the local culture and wherever possible make sure the local community shares the benefits of trekking and tourism. Local guides provide our clients a deep insight and connection to the places they trek through, but also contributes towards employment and the ongoing economic benefit to the region.
We also support sustainable development in remote mountain communities. We do this through direct donation for projects such as mini hydroelectricity schemes, solar panels for light, safe water projects and trail refurbishment, which is so important for the more remote villages. We also fund the building of new classrooms for which direct donations from our guests provide the libraries, schoolbooks and general supplies to run the school.
Perhaps our largest contribution goes to the Pasang Lhamu Mountaineering Foundation [PLMF] established in 1993. Pasang Lhamu Sherpa was the first woman to summit Mount Everest although tragically she died on the descent. PLMF supports child education through scholarships, vocational trainings for women, the Lukla hospital, Tree plantation, peak cleaning and pollution control.
