Jomsom
Jomsom and Mustang Jomsom, also known as Dzongsam or New Fort, is at an altitude of 2800 meters and is situated on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River. It is surrounded by snow-capped peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range. Besides natural beauty, Jomsom also offers an insight into Tibetan culture, Buddhist religion, and traditional life. About a day’s walk from Jomsom, Muktinath is a religious pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists. Jomsom is also the gateway to the hidden kingdom of Upper-Mustang, a rich cultural place with ancient forts, hidden caves, and monasteries. Jomsom is the administrative and commercial centre of the Mustang district. The local inhabitants are known as “Thakalis. They follow a form of Tibetan Buddhism and are known as serious traders and successful businessmen throughout the region and in the whole of Nepal. Being the headquarters of the region, Jomsom is reasonably developed with a local hospital, bank, police station, etc. It is served by daily flights to and from Pokhara. Most of the flights take place in the early morning, as by noon, wind picks up and clouds come in. The region of Mustang is part of the Tibetan Plateau, a dry and desert-like area in the Himalayas. It lies in the rain-shadow of the Himalayas, which makes it an arid place. Most visitors come to Mustang because of the natural majesty of the region. There is an abundance of wildlife and birds, colorful flowers, apple orchards, and the impressive Himalayan peaks. Tibetan culture is another attraction for tourists to this area. Tibetan culture, traditional houses, Buddhist & Bon religion, hidden caves, and the mystic hidden kingdom of Upper Mustang are other reasons to visit Jomsom and the surrounding district of Mustang.
