Airports Development Program Planning and Design of “12” Saudi Airports “Prototype Program” Project Information Location: Size Info.:
Various locations all around Saudi Arabia (12 Sites) Range from 7 to 21 Million m2 – site area per airport, 47,000 m2 - BUA (Phase I) per each airport development, 6.8 Billion SR - Estimated construction value Type/Scope: Infrastructure - Airport Masterplan - Transportation Buildings Client: General Authority of Civil Aviation Year: 2017 - 2018 Firm: Zuhair Fayez Partnership Project Description: In context of Saudi 2030 National Vision, GACA proposed to develop “12” regional and domestic airports so-called Airports Development Program 2020. These airports combined together are considered 40% of GACA’s aviation sector and the major spectral project. The program include “3” greenfield airports are Qunfudah, Najran and Farasan; whilst the other “9” brownfield airports are Wedjh, Baha, Wadi Al Dawaser, Sharurah, Qaisumah, Rafha, Turaif, Al Jouf, and Gurayat. ZFP approach is to be “GACA success partner” by undertaking the mission to execute the planning and design of this airports with highest level of flexible, professional and committed consultancy services. Airport sites are vary from 7 to 21 million square meters area. ZFP Scope of work includes the provision of study, planning and design services of all items both airside and landside based on the development program and airport masterplan. The project covers the development of a new passenger terminal building (PTB), main operational buildings, ancillary facilities and other air and landside infrastructure.

Airports Development Program Planning and Design of “12” Saudi Airports “Prototype Program” Role & Responsibilities: Project Design Manager In this particular case, Ramy has been assigned to act the role of Project Design Manager. Responsible for all technical design issues, lead and manage team of planners, architects and engineers to develop the 12 airport masterplan in and to design the required facilities covered at phase 1 of this development. Moreover, Ramy was responsible to coordinate and manage the discussions with all external parties; e.g. GACA upper management, airport operators, GACA end-users, governmental agencies, stakeholders, and sub-consultancies. Throughout The Project: > First Step: Due to the project course, GACA management has consulted Ramy in the preparation stage of the development program. “How business goals influenced by technical consultation” is a proven successful approach by this case. The concept of Prototyping. The Airports Development subjected in this development inspired from Ramy’s valuable technical advice to save cost of billions. The awarded contract to ZFP has been adapted to cover the new scope with variation order before starting. Both Client (GACA) and Ramy's employer (ZFP) gained a valuable brilliant benefit from his strategic technical/business advice. > Project Brief and Programming: Defining the project program was a key step to ensure the final results of the development. This task includes determine the planning key parameters and the design criteria (annual traffic, peak hour…etc.). Ramy's vital role to identify the program criteria was one of the key pillars for the mission. > Concept Design Stage: Generating a highly motivated, exceptional yet economic design was the next challenge. Ramy's team did their best to deliver the best consultancy services for their client. The developed concept requires maximum level of flexibility and adaptability that ensure the feasibility of developing 12 airports based on the proposed model.
Page 38
Ramy Mosa - Architect Portfolio Issue: July 2020
Airports Development Program Planning and Design of “12” Saudi Airports “Prototype Program” Design main outcomes were terminal buildings of area around 24,000 m ²are designed based on a prototype design approach proposing 2 different sizes allocated to each airport according to potential traffic development, so-called small and medium models. The design concept adapt highly flexible criteria to allow the two models to convert into either smaller or larger models. Which means the small one could be sized into x-small version to meet lower traffic capacity. On other hand, the medium size could be enlarged to meet higher traffic capacity as well. > Design Development Leading the technical team to develop the engineering design of the project considering cost effective solutions was the main role for Ramy during this stage. Proposed systems now have to be designed and engineered to ensure the effectiveness of the final product. Moreover, the overall monitoring of the process and the work quality was a real challenge due to project size and the involved number of staff. To achieve that, high leadership managerial skills are required. Both client and organizational satisfactions are demonstrating the success of the process. > Tendering the Design Finally, mission accomplished. "12" construction tender packages have been prepared to meet each airport development requirement on bases of the prototype design of the adaptable terminal building, support/ancillary facilities, airside and landside scopes have been accomplished and delivered. GACA and its third party review and feedback gave clear indicator of the brilliant success. Achievements & Added Values "Due to start and after the end"… building a strategic relationship with a valuable client. A proven added value along the path. Ramy’s great value demonstrated by highly ability to work under pressure and within complicated work environment to meet business goals, solve technical challenges and meet operator requirements. The added values leaded to a great achievement by winning the competition and award the PPP proposal.

Academic work Developing A Strategic Framework For The Design Of Adaptive Building Envelopes Master of Science in Architectural Engineering - Dissertation Research The main aim of this thesis is to provide insight into the design of the adaptive envelopes, to explore the concept’s aspects, strategies and what are both, potentials and benefits that can be gained and, on the other side, risks and challenges that may be faced throughout the envelope life journey (from planning and design up to post-operate).
followed by an exploration of the values of the concept through an analytical comparison between different case studies. The case study approach allows in-depth, multifaceted explorations of complex issues in their real-life settings.
Ini tiation Pha s e 1
The research starts with a literature review to define the adaptive envelope concept, terms and trends.
Then findings have been formed, basically, an adaptive design strategies taxonomy which is conceived as a critical part of the frame-of-work that has been, mainly initiated for further development in the future.

Roy David Martinez
Airport Consultant at Zuhair Fayez Partnership Ramy worked with Richard in the same group
Experienced Architect & Manager Roy David managed Ramy directly
Ramy is a diligent senior professional architect with immense creativity for design in which all airport functional planning parameters are met. He is also a leader managing a number of architects to support his responsibilities in the design of airport buildings particularly the main passenger terminal building and the air traffic control tower together with other ancillary buildings. He has good presentation skills which captivates the non-technical audience with his well-developed perspectives and animations. I believe he would be an asset to any design company who might employ him.
I had the pleasure of managing directly Architect Ramy Mosa during my two years with Zuhair Fayez Partnership Consultants (ZFP) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. First as the Technical Manager and then as the Technical Director for the Aviation and Transportation Division and finally as Technical Manager for all disciplines of the Jeddah Office. Architect Ramy Mosa led a Team of young Architectural Designers for the Jeddah Group of the Aviation and Transportation Division of ZFP in some very challenging and complicated projects. I interacted with him and his team on a daily basis. In my 35 years of working in the Design and construction field I have seldom found a person of such quality and professionalism. It was a pure joy to watch him develop and then perform to a level much greater than his years of experience. His effort and dedication is second to none and much greater than what I have observed in this market. I highly recommend him to any potential employer as a great asset to your organization. I look forward to the day we can collaborate on future projects.
