Interaction Story – Manufacturing DSS Take-Away : To enable manufacturing decision support thru intuitive visualization and natural navigation Trigger: The factory manager Jack Greenfield for FashionFirst is doing a health check of all plants on a Monday morning. This a recurring task on his calendar. Based on this task the manager creates a to-do list for problem resolution. The to-do list is outside the scope of the narrative FashionFirst is a fashion apparels company with $1 billion in sales in 2008. It is based in Seattle, America with plants in Seattle, Portugal, Europe, Dhaka, Bangladesh and Shenzhen, China Establishing shot : Jack Greenfield enters the Seattle shop floor at 7 am before the day starts up. Its Monday – time to check how the plants are doing worldwide. The cost cutting measures have left him in charge of the entry factory network. His job is to monitor the health of the network and create an action items list which he emails to the plant foremen worldwide who are now acting plant managers. They can be relied on to carry out precise instructions but not to make judgment calls. The action item list requires filling in the anomaly incident, the outrage parameter value, the course of action and closure parameter value KARTHIK Beat 1 : Jacks opens up the Factory Network Viewer. It’s a Google Map in a schematic mode with the factory locations pinned. Selecting any pin, gives 3-4 key factory parameters : [choose parameter] [Inventory], [Turnover], [Day’s Supply] and if there is either an unplanned machine stoppage or outrage on any of the factory parameters. He clicks on each location in turn. Everything looks fine. He decides to take a closer look at each plant. He click the Seattle Plant KARTHIK Beat 2 : The screen now shows the schematic plant layout. He sees it mimics a high level view of the actual plant layout he sees from his office window .The color coding demarcates the manufacturing process and the component bins which are arranged close to the machine where it will be consumed. He checks to see if any of them are blinking. That is a sign of an anomaly. None so far. He click on the <machine name> machine at the beginning of the process Beat 3 : He sees a menu with two entries : Operations and Planning. He chooses Operations PARTHA Beat 4 : He sees a popup for the Sewing machine 2 showing two pieces of information : Status – shown by Red and Green LED blocks. The Green LED is

He decides to investigate. He selects the data point, right clicks and chooses “Show Data”. PARTHA Beat 5: The Chart is replaced with a data set, starting from the selected data point. He has the option of copying the data and the chart to the clipboard if required. Satisfied that the number is not unusually high, he closes the window PARTHA Beat 6: He selects the Planning menu for Sewing machine 1. A new window, showing the status, but a new Planning Chart is shown HARSHA Beat 7 : He sees the histogram, showing the production orders scheduled on the machine, till the last 1 minute. Selecting any one element shows the Order No. Quantity, Start Time and End Time in a pop up window. He wants to know the status of completion of the order. He right clicks on the selected bar on the histogram and selects “Show Order”. KARTHIK | HARSHA Beat 8 : This bring up the Order Progress window. He sees the routing of the order. The current operation of the order is green and blinking on the routing. The planned route is marked in yellow. KARTHIK Beat 9 : Satisfied with the Seattle plant, he checks the other plants as well. The factory network is looking stable. He’ll check again mid-week. For now he closes the Factory Network Viewer and the Action Item List template.
