ABOUT ME My name is Ran An, and I am from Beijing, China. Being an interior designer has been my dream since I was in middle school. Eight years ago, I began to study interior design. I have been able to continue studying interior design because of one simple reason – I love it. And now, my dream has become true. In my spare time, my favoriate thing to do is photography, and I have been interested in photography for 7 years. Even a lot of friends often say to me, “You are professional in your photography as you are with interior design.“

COMMERCIAL DESIGN
For this project, I designed a commercial office for an architecture firm which has 10 employees in San Francisco by using sustainable ideas. The location of the office is in design center, San Francisco, and the area of the office is about 2,000 sqf. In this project, I particular focused on sustainability, accessibility and flexibility.
9
USER SCENARIO
My client is a global architecture design company, and they plan to open their newly expanded office in San Francisco. They do both commercial and residential design. Right now, they are focusing on doing sustainable design for both field. For this company, they are good at utilizing various sustainable strategies and new technologies to make sustainability. A lot of designs they did already achieve LEED certification. As an architecture design company, they can design any styles that clients ask. However, the best design style they are expert in is minimalism.
10
11
CONCEPT PHILOSOPHY
My concept is Purity. I used less color, less materials, less decor to create a pure space, but it will be sustainable and comfortable. Sustainable space means a pure spacial environment without any harmful materials to nature and people who occupy it. My intention is to create a space which focuses on functionality and space arrangement rather than excess decoration.

LIBRARY DESIGN
This Project is about redesigning the Potrero Branch Library which is located on Potrero Hill. The Potrero Branch Library was the 22nd branch established in the San Francisco Public Library system. It is a 6,000 sq.ft. building with two stories. This project has been a team-work project, and it was finished by myself and my partner Jianing He. Thanks for his contribution to this project.
31
USER TARGET
Potrero Hill is a residential neighbourhood in San Francisco, California. It is known for its views of San Francisco Bay and city skyline, it is closed to many destination spots, its sunny weather, and for being new two freeways and the Caltrain station. The mission of future public Library is to increase the capacity of libraries throughout the people to recognize and realize their full potential as community hubs for healthy child and family development.
32
33
CONCEPT PHILOSOPHY
The idea of the concept is from bird’s nest. There are three reasons why we chose Bird’s Nest as our concept for this project. Firstly, the project is located in a residential area and there is high percentage of family in this area. For birds, nests are their homes, and it means family for them. In this way, we want to use nests to convey the idea of family. Second, this library has a very good view of downtown San Francisco. Therefore, when you see the view from inside of the library, you will feel like that you are seeing the city from a forest on the top of a mountain that is outside of the city. In addition, nests are made of branches , so they are natural and sustainable. Therefore, our concept is also to convey the idea of sustainability.

PERSPECTIVE RENDERINGS
Teen Area
This perspective shows the teen area. The shapes of book cases on the wall were developed from the concept. Teenagers can pick up a book and sitting on the bench, or doing their homework by using those tables and chairs. During daytime, curtain wall provides sunlight for the space and LED suspension ligts illuminate the space during dusk and evening.
50
Teen Area
This perspective shows the teen area. There are several sets of tables and chairs beside the window, so teenagers can read or study by using natural light which is really good for eyes. The book case beside the tables are convenient for people to grab books.

RETAIL DESIGN
For this project, I designed a selling environment to be contained within 1,250 square feet plus 750 square feet stock for a women’s shoe store in Macy’s. The total gross area including selling and stock will be 2,000 square feet.
71
USER TARGET
In 2012, Macy’s turns eyes to its new targets which is Millennials market. Macy’s launched 13 new brands and expand 11 existing brands that target customers between the ages of 13 and 30. According to the research of Macy’s, customers ages from 13 to 30, is the largest group of consumers in America. Today, millennials spend more than $65 billion on the kinds of merchandise sold by Macy’s.
72
73
CONCEPT PHILOSOPHY
My concept is Star. There are two reasons why I choose Star as my concept for women’s shoes store. From 2012, Macy’s turns eyes on their new target which is the younge people from age 13-30. Every young girl wants to be look like a super star by dressing up. This is the first meaning of word “Star”. A shiny star on a night sky always catch people’s eyes, and every girl wants to be like a shiny star to attract people’s attention. I also get the idea of star from the Macy’s logo. In my design, I used star shape as my main design element, and using shapes that developing from the star shape such as triangle.

HOSPITAILTY DESIGN
The project is in a 36-store hotel in downtown Miami. In this project, I designed the hotel lobby, hotel restaurant and one typical hotel room. The hotel is the premier destination for travellers and the preferred venue for social events in the city. The hotel strives to achieve unique interiors, in harmony with the contemporary building architecture . Guest comfort is always a priority.
93
HOTEL CONCEPT PHILOSOPHY
My concept is Polychrome. This project is a resort hotel that will be located in Miami, which is a big city that a lot of Latin Americans living there. Therefore, Miami is deeply affected by Latin cultural, and it has a nick name called the Capital of Latin America. Most of people relate Latin America with bright colors because they like using bright colors in their lives. For example, they used to paint different bright colors on their houses. Therefore, I decided to use Polychrome as my concept. Meanwhile, the colors of Latin Americas flag reflect bright colors, such as yellow, blue, green and red.
94
95
HOTEL RESTAURANT CONCEPT PHILOSOPHY
My concept of hotel restaurant is from feather. Miami is near the Caribbean area, and one of the official symbols is parrot. For example, many official symbols of the country such as the flags of Caribbean or National symbols have been changed to parrots. Otherwise, parrots have colorful and vivid feathers, and also my concept of hotel is polychrome. Therefore, it means that the hotel lobby and hotel restaurant could have same color scheme to make a good visual transition from lobby to restaurant.

PERSPECTIVE RENDERINGS
Lobby Reception Desk
This perspective shows the hotel reception and concierge area. I created a feature wall in back of the reception desk, which is consist of several colored squares. It represents my logo while conveying my concept which is polychrome. I did dark wooden material for the other walls that around feature walls because I want to make strong contrast with the feature wall.
106
Lobby Lounge and Recpetion Desk
This perspective shows the hotel Lobby Lounge. For this area, I created water features because the hotel is located in Miami which is a coastal city. This represents the link between hotel and ocean. I used some soft and warm colored materials such as the sofa material and wall materials to bring the feeling of relaxation and comfort to people. Meanwhile, I also put colors like yellow, orange and blue to convey the idea of polychrome.

I put the bath tub in the center to make it face the bathroom door, and used bright colors and lighting to make it a focalpoint in entire bathroom.
116

This is the perspective of entire guest room bathroom. In this view, the rendering shows what the bathroom looks like entirely. For materials, I selected several different stones and tiles for the bathroom. concerning color, I used light yellow materials to create a feeling of warmth and relaxation.
