Local attractions include the Painted Hills, Mount Bachelor, the Columbia River Gorge, the Deschutes River, and Ochoco National Forest. Mount Bachelor is known for its excellent skiing and other winter sports and is about a 1.5-hour drive from Allen Creek Hunting Retreat. Columbia Gorge Wine Country is one of the up-and-coming wine regions in the United States and is about a 2.5-hour drive from the property. CLIMATE

There is a definite four-season climate, but the area is semi-arid, with total precipitation of 10.67 inches per year and 8 inches of snowfall, on average, per year. Summer temperatures in July average 86 degrees with comfortable, cool nights. The winter temperatures average around 41 degrees, with the coldest month being January. With 300± days of sunshine a year, Prineville and the surrounding areas have a very comfortable climate.

LOCATION

Prineville, Oregon, almost entirely surrounded by rimrock, lies east of Bend, just off Highway 26. Prineville is the seat of Crook County and the oldest city in Central Oregon, with a population of 11,957 (2023 projection). Its quiet downtown strip offers shopping and dining opportunities, while the surrounding natural landscape provides countless opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast. Prineville is located in Central Oregon’s high desert with the Cascade mountains to the west and Ochoco National Forest to the east. The Crooked River runs just south of the city, and the famous Deschutes River is only an hour away. Smith Rock State Park, renowned for its deep river canyons and word class rock climbing, is 19 miles to the northwest.

WATER RIGHTS

Under Oregon law, all water belongs to the public. With some exceptions, cities, irrigators, businesses, and other water users must obtain a permit or license from the Water Resources Department to use water from any source - whether it is underground or from lakes or streams.
