AREA HISTORY Along with the well-known Santa Fe Trail that traverses the region, the Historic Bent’s Fort, which also played an essential role in the establishment of the area around La Junta, is located a short drive northeast. The fort was built in 1833 by the Bent Brothers and Ceran St.Vrain as a fur trading destination along the Santa Fe Trail and the Arkansas River. When the fort was established, it was located on the border of the United States and what was then the newly independent Mexico. Also, many Native Americans frequented the post, including the Kiowa, Cheyenne, Comanche, and Arapahoe tribes. The cultural interactions played a large part in the development of the southwestern United States. The fort has since been preserved for the public to experience. There are special events and education days for the public to enjoy. The history you learn and the artifacts you see make this a great destination in southeastern Colorado.
