AREA HISTORY The local area provides a colorful history of the settlement of Wyoming. The area known as Greybull was allegedly named by Native Americans after an Albino American Bison. The town grew and developed as a centralized hub for agriculture production, including cash crops, hay production, and both cattle and sheep. In the early 1900s, the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy railroads frequently ran routes into the Greybull area to accommodate cattle, sheep, oil, and gas. Agriculture, oil, and gas continue to have a strong presence. The nearby town of Shell, Wyoming, was named after the abundance of fossilized shells found in the area. The area also includes the Red Gulch Dinosaur Track site. These both continue to be attractions for tourists, schools, archeologists, and paleontologists.
