AREA HISTORY A brief history of Montpelier Idaho would be best described as a regular stop on the Oregon Trail that was used by the Mormon pioneers to settle the areas within the Bear River Valley. Mormon settlers broke this ground to make it the fertile ground it is today for those that continue to ranch and farm here. In 1896 the bank in Montpelier was visited by Butch Cassidy and his gang making an unauthorized withdrawal before leaving town.
