AREA HISTORY

Local legend has it that Pe Ell derived its name from the local Cowlitz tribe’s mispronunciation of the name Pierre Charles, the French-Canadian trapper who settled in the region in the 1850s. By the late 1800s, many settlers had flocked to the area. Interestingly, it was not the rich farmland that drew the settlers to the area but rather the forests of old-growth fir and cedar trees. In 1892, the Northern Pacific Railroad laid tracks to Pe Ell, and in 1906 the town was incorporated. Soon after being incorporated, the town grew to include many services and entertainment businesses. At one time, Pe Ell even had an opera house.

In the early 1930s, the Great Depression ended Pe Ell’s booming downtown. The mills closed, businesses shut down, and people moved away. Eventually, the train tracks were removed, and now the 56-mile Willapa Hills Trail occupies the gravel railroad bed and runs from South Bend in Pacific County to Chehalis in Lewis County.
