AREA HISTORY

Sundance, Wyoming is enveloped in early Native American and western history. Finding another geographical area in Wyoming that witnessed so many historical figures and events would be hardpressed. Named after the sacred Sundance Mountain, where Native Americans once performed their Sun Dance ceremonies, the town was first recognized in 1875 as a trading post. Known as the only place the notorious Sundance Kid ever spent any jail time, the town has had a very colorful past.

The town has witnessed Gold Fever that pushed many prospectors to the Lead and Deadwood, South Dakota gold claims just 47 miles away. It watched as Devil’s Tower became America’s first National Monument in 1906. It witnessed the construction and completion of Mount Rushmore through the late 1920s and 1930s and is awaiting the completion of the Crazy Horse Memorial in Custer, South Dakota, 81 miles away.

Sundance, Wyoming could easily be considered the hub of early Native American and western history. One can easily find a historical attraction, regardless of which direction your compass points you on your next adventure from Sundance.
