AREA HISTORY
The nearby Oregon Trail was traveled by over 400,000 pioneers, including settlers, farmers, miners, ranchers, business owners, and their families, who ventured into the West in search of their own piece of land. As the trail entered Idaho from Wyoming, it curved northwest toward the Portneuf River valley. Some pioneers who reached this juncture headed southwest towards California, taking the Hudspeth Cutoff, while others continued their journey northwest to Fort Hall.
It was in this northwest bend of the trail, in the year 1879, that the first settlers established a horse ranch in the picturesque Gem Valley area. Over time, the community grew, and by 1900, Chesterfield, Idaho, boasted a population of around 400 residents. The town’s prosperity was further enhanced by the construction of several buildings, including homes, a school, a church, and a general store.
However, the arrival of a new railroad line led to the town’s decline, as commerce was drawn away to a newer settlement called Bancroft, founded in 1898. Chesterfield’s population dwindled, and by the turn of the century, it was mostly abandoned.
Today, the historic Chesterfield Foundation maintains this pioneer settlement, listed with the National Register. Over 20 of the original buildings, many built between 1884 and 1904 using brick and logs, have been restored. Visitors can see awe-inspiring landscapes and the rich history of Chesterfield and the Gem Valley, which offer a glimpse into Idaho’s early days.
