AREA HISTORY Gold was discovered in 1862 at Whiskey Flat (roughly 46 miles from North Fork Ranch), prompting an influx of miners to flood the region. Due to the area’s growing population, Grant County was carved out of the existing Wasco and Umatilla Counties and established in October of 1864. As the gold rush waned, area residents turned their focus to the area’s other natural resources. Timber, farming, and ranching became and continue to be the region’s economic drivers. The region is also popular amongst hunters, fishermen, and other recreationalists. www.fayranches.com | (800) 238.8616 | info@fayranches.com

WATER SOURCES | WATER RIGHTS Under Oregon law, all water is publicly owned. With some exceptions, cities, farmers, factory owners, and other users must obtain a permit or water right from the Water Resources Department to use water from any source, whether it is underground or from lakes or streams. Landowners with water flowing past, through, or under their property do not automatically have the right to use that water without a permit from the Department. The State of Oregon administers the waters of Oregon under a “prior-appropriation” doctrine; first in time, first in the right. The North Fork John Day River Ranch has 23.6± acres of Certified Water Rights of record. A certified water rights examination by a licensed professional is recommended for further clarification of the ranch water rights. 16
